luis severino's game scores in his last two starts: 11, 12

I’m currently in Minnesota and got to see Pablo Lopez’s complete game shutout at Target Field. Time of game was 2:17. Stadium has a giant portrait of two twin brothers on each side of the Mississippi River shaking hands.

big ups for my man jameson taillon tonight

i mean he still has a 6.15 ERA and needs to 'miss more bats' but 'you gotta start somewhere'

We have a collection of new NL All-Stars who replace pitchers who will not pitch in the #AllStarGame:

- Kodai Senga will replace Marcus Stroman
- Alex Cobb will replace Bryce Elder
- Craig Kimbrel will replace Devin Williams
- Corbin Burnes will replace Spencer Strider pic.twitter.com/dnTdmYV4Of

some of these guys are definitely having good seasons but it's getting kinda silly isn't it? at the very least, if players are going to keep bowing out at the rate they are, there's no reason for each team to have 6 additional roster spots anymore.

Saw Nico Hoerner make a near-identical play to this in London, absolute thing of beauty to steal a hit.

Only difference really was that Nico was playing 2B in London - he had to range the other way.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 15 July 2023 10:15 (eleven months ago) link

Yeah he did well there, Dansby is back on Sunday from the IL, but that drops for a hit otherwise

Was not sure where to put this but Awful Announcing has released The 2023 MLB local broadcaster rankings:

https://awfulannouncing.com/orig/2023-mlb-local-broadcaster-rankings.html

Bee OK, Tuesday, 18 July 2023 18:18 (ten months ago) link

The Giants broadcast being ranked #1 is no surprise as they are usually the winner. I'm pleasantly surprised as I didn't know they were that well regarded. It's funny to me that they are #1 and don't even mention the best part of the booth, Jon Miller.

cleveland has hit 69 homers as a team this season

five of them (7.2%) have come in a seven-inning stretch against the pirates last night and tonight

mookieproof, Tuesday, 18 July 2023 23:59 (ten months ago) link

That's almost twice as many as Ohtani! (Absurdio ad reductio.)

clemenza, Wednesday, 19 July 2023 01:04 (ten months ago) link

Strange day indeed, runs scored:

Giants 11

Honestly think the ability of the Sox to light up aces with a couple of exceptions and get stymied by journeymen with 5+ ERAs is incredibly funny.

A non-exhaustive list of good SPs destroyed by the Sox this season:

- Luis Castillo, 5 ER in 5 IP
- Gausman (at Fenway), 8 ER in 3.1 IP
- Snell, 6 ER in 4 IP

Handed Gerrit Cole his first loss of the season, hit guys like Glasnow & Giolito hard even when they couldn’t string runs together. Think only Joe Ryan & Stroman were on the level of high-ERA guys playing for sub-.500 teams that have successfully shut them down.

Mariners have a decent chance of breaking the record for amount of time spent at .500 in a season.

Seattle Mariners (47-47)

Last 2 games: 1-1 (.500)
Last 4 games: 2-2 (.500)
Last 6 games: 3-3 (.500)
Last 8 games: 4-4 (.500)
Last 10 games: 5-5 (.500)
Last 20 games: 10-10 (.500)
Last 60 games: 30-30 (.500)

I don’t even want to talk about it. Unreal season.

a love song for connor wong (gyac), Thursday, 20 July 2023 19:12 (ten months ago) link

I literally started watching the fucking Red Sox, as a team that can hit, because I was sick of watching the Mariners fritter away good pitching with 10+ strikeouts through the order and just having zero plate discipline.

a love song for connor wong (gyac), Thursday, 20 July 2023 19:15 (ten months ago) link

yeah, and it feels like every other time i turn on a game they have a collision or near-collision in the outfield because they're just not communicating with each other?

the Orioles were my team as a kid, but i've also been a Mariners fan most of my life, and it wasn't that long ago i was comparing the two - similar levels of promise and futility in my lifetime, but it felt like Mariners fans were having a good time watching a fun, lucky, chaotic team, while Orioles fans were either complete doomers or they were pinning their hopes on a mythical rebuild whose end date kept being postponed. And now...

JoeStork, Thursday, 20 July 2023 19:50 (ten months ago) link

Sounds like last night's O's/M's game was a doozy

Tracer Hand, Friday, 21 July 2023 07:52 (ten months ago) link

One of the constants in my baseball life has been my dislike of the Red Sox, their fans and their ballpark.

I wish there were more zany-dimensioned parks like it.

I briefly considered becoming a Red Sox fan after the Expos moved and I was cheering for the red sox in the 2004 playoffs, but the red sox fans turned me off and I ultimately never felt comfortable cheering for a big market team

silverfish, Friday, 21 July 2023 22:46 (ten months ago) link

xp It's ugly as sin and stupidly contrarian. It's like my impression of Bostonians in general--it takes pride in being difficult.

I am being mostly tongue in cheek; my brother-in-law is from Boston and I love him dearly, but I suspect he would agree to some extent with my assessment.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 21 July 2023 22:47 (ten months ago) link

Fenway is amazing, but concur with the obnoxiousness of red sox fans. At least the yankees have some self-awareness/pride in being absolute scumbags, yet the sox are just as bad yet like to position themselves as the good guys?

Everyday I watch Mookie Betts play I get the pleasure of watching a perennial mvp go out there and play killer baseball every day, and the schadenfreude of knowing it is at the expense of the red sox franchise.

O's>Jays>Yanks>Rays>Sox

This O's/Ray's series is so much fun right now too, really hoping the O's can get these last two games to have a confident lead in the division going to the end of the year.

Apologies for some unforgiveable writing in the above post, that was painful to re-read

nationals had gone 103 straight series (of at least three games) without a sweep . . . until today

their last was against the pirates in june 2021
