Mike Rizzo says that he does not expect Starlin Castro to be back with the Nationals. Took a very hard line.

BOOOOOOOO shoulda been Naps

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 23 July 2021 14:04 (two years ago) link

The name Guardians is a reference to well-known Art Deco statues located on the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge, which spans the Cuyahoga River and connects downtown Cleveland to the city’s trendy Ohio City neighborhood. Those statues are known as the “Guardians of Traffic.”

na (NA), Friday, 23 July 2021 14:05 (two years ago) link

that's nice

Yeah having read more about it, while I liked the idea of "Naps," if this is truly something locals all know and identify with the city it totally works for me

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 23 July 2021 14:12 (two years ago) link

I love it!

Van Horn Street, Friday, 23 July 2021 14:23 (two years ago) link

the name is fine. spiders would've been cooler. i do like the blocky font, especially for cleveland - reminiscent of the previous font but just different enough

na (NA), Friday, 23 July 2021 14:32 (two years ago) link

The new name is ok - I do prefer the old school names tho (Blues, Spiders etc).

brownie, Friday, 23 July 2021 14:35 (two years ago) link

i know the context behind it but guardians just sounds so generic

, Friday, 23 July 2021 14:46 (two years ago) link

yep

brownie, Friday, 23 July 2021 14:50 (two years ago) link

One of my favorite team in sports are called the Raptors so really my bar is pretty low.

I just don’t like the ‘Cleveland’ font, looks like ‘Cleueland’. The rest I think it’s dope.

The mighty ducks

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Friday, 23 July 2021 15:00 (two years ago) link

the context is cool but the name itself is arena football-level militaristic garbage

also the font sucks. if they were really tying into the statues they’d have done something different than using warmed-over chief wahoo lettering

mookieproof, Friday, 23 July 2021 15:02 (two years ago) link

I don’t hear militaristic overtones with the word ‘Guardian’ but maybe it’s an americanism I’m missing.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 23 July 2021 15:14 (two years ago) link

were the new york guardians also named after traffic monuments?

, Friday, 23 July 2021 15:49 (two years ago) link

combined with the team colors I think it's meant as a reference to the Red Guards

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 23 July 2021 15:55 (two years ago) link

the cleveland redguards vs the cincinnati khajiit

Everyone hated the Nationals when they were named

not at all how I recall it

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 23 July 2021 18:49 (two years ago) link

everyone hated the W logo iirc, nevermind the Expos->miami->loria shellgame

Apparently Jacobs Field will henceforth be referred to as The G Spot.

henry s, Friday, 23 July 2021 19:25 (two years ago) link

hell yeah

I love the isometric look of the baseball logo

francisF, Saturday, 24 July 2021 00:53 (two years ago) link

I vaguely remembered today that the start of Major League is a scene setting montage of Cleveland landmarks.
I wondered if these Guardian statues were in that sequence.
It turns out that the very first shot of the film is a pan down one of the statues.

rangers in eight games since the all-star break:

0-8

.160/.227/.244 with 13 runs in 260 PA (this OPS is 40 points lower than any single hitter with a minimum of 200 PA)

9.00 ERA, 61 runs allowed (60 earned), .304/.357/.596 against in 60 IP/277 PA (this OPS against is higher than all but eight single hitters with 200+ PA)

mookieproof, Saturday, 24 July 2021 13:42 (two years ago) link

After failing to score in the 2nd inning of today’s game against the Astros, the Rangers have gone 97 innings without leading their opponent. They have just surpassed the 1977 Atlanta Braves who went 96 innings without a lead.

uh, can this even be possible

BREAKING: The Los Angeles Dodgers are making significant progress on a deal that would send them star right-hander Max Scherzer and star shortstop Trea Turner from the Washington Nationals for a prospect-laden return, sources tell ESPN.

i guess it can

BREAKING: The Dodgers are finalizing a deal to acquire star right-hander Max Scherzer and star shortstop Trea Turner from the Washington Nationals for a massive prospect haul, sources tell ESPN. The blockbuster of blockbusters is going to happen.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 30 July 2021 01:07 (two years ago) link

Are the Dodgers that embarrassed that they might lose the division for the first time in nearly a decade? They've only been 20 games over .500 since 2013.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 30 July 2021 01:15 (two years ago) link

they've got money and they're fuckin spending it -- and this time, at least, on non-sex offenders

also they have nice uniforms

Scherzer, Buehler, and Kershaw. that will be formidable in the playoffs

Dodgers acting like they're in our fantasy league this year! this is nuts

More trades happening.

holy shit, nick madrigal for a year and 2 months of craig kimbrel

, Friday, 30 July 2021 19:10 (two years ago) link

very consistent pattern this deadline of teams willing to give up touted prospects w/ many years of control for less than a few seasons of a high level player in order to try and win it this year. maybe a one year blip or perhaps a shifting in valuation a bit of what a push for a title is worth vs the allure of prospects w/ only a handful or so of teams really even trying to go for it

jesus luzardo for starling marte
josiah gray & kiebert ruiz for scherzer/turner
nick madrigal for craig kimbrel
austin martin & simeon woods richardson for jose berrios
spencer howard for kyle gibson/ian kennedy

pretty much all current or ex top 100 prospects & a few of them much higher than that

J0rdan S., Friday, 30 July 2021 19:12 (two years ago) link

Orioles said to be demanding very high price for Tanner Scott and Paul Fry and at this rate, who knows, maybe they'll get it
