He has struck out 4 of the first 5 batters?

Vin Jawn (PBKR), Wednesday, 16 June 2021 23:37 (four years ago)

Yes, he has struck out 4 of the first 5 batters.

Vin Jawn (PBKR), Wednesday, 16 June 2021 23:38 (four years ago)

5 of the first 6 now, but that last guy--a .156 hitter--took him to 11 pitches. So he's thrown 34 through two innings.

clemenza, Wednesday, 16 June 2021 23:42 (four years ago)

let's go starting pitchers who are named jacob degrom, let's do this

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 16 June 2021 23:49 (four years ago)

Two out, runner on third, knocks in the first run of the game and keeps his average above .400. It's almost comical.

clemenza, Wednesday, 16 June 2021 23:53 (four years ago)

Yeah it’s kind of expected now

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 16 June 2021 23:55 (four years ago)

Ominous--out of the game after 3 perfect innings (8K).

clemenza, Thursday, 17 June 2021 00:16 (four years ago)

It's just gonna be like this all season huh

DeGrom and Ohtani should be allowed to take steroids for health reasons, for the good of the sport and my mental health

, Thursday, 17 June 2021 00:21 (four years ago)

I have this horrible feeling that they'll just shut him down for the season at some point, and it'll be like Williams and Gwynn and Griffey and the Expos in '94 in the what-could-have-been department. But worse.

clemenza, Thursday, 17 June 2021 00:45 (four years ago)

right shoulder soreness

, Thursday, 17 June 2021 01:15 (four years ago)

yeah you could really tell he wasn’t right when he struck out his seventh straight hitter lol

k3vin k., Thursday, 17 June 2021 01:43 (four years ago)

You have to wonder if he was going strikeout ten in a row on a way to no hitter or something. But these small scares also feel like the risk of being so otherworldly. Like, humans aren’t supposed to be doing this.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 17 June 2021 02:33 (four years ago)

it makes me wonder if he’s soft tbh

k3vin k., Thursday, 17 June 2021 02:44 (four years ago)

Even if he keeps pitching more or less regularly, it'll probably be close as to whether he even qualifies for the ERA title. Mets have 101 games left; he's at 67 innings, so he needs 95 more. If he got 18 more starts, he'd need to average 5+ per start--not a huge margin of error with him, it would seem. (If he were a hitter going after a batting title, he'd have enough of a cushion that he could fall short of the AB--they'd assign him the necessary 0-for, and he'd still win. Doesn't work for pitchers.)

clemenza, Thursday, 17 June 2021 02:52 (four years ago)

he's at 0.54 ERA after 67 innings. i'm not so interested in the full season record, at the moment, because injuries happen.

but who else has had a comparable stretch over that shorter amount of innings (67 IP)? the only one i could think of was jack flaherty, who has a 0.70 ERA over a 64 inning stretch from 7/21/21 - 9/8/21. or, cherrypicking that, a 0.50 ERA over 54 innings from 8/1/21 - 9/8/21.

it seems like there would be relievers who approach this? someone with a baseball-ref subscription could probably figure this out in 2 seconds flat

Karl Malone, Thursday, 17 June 2021 17:33 (four years ago)

7/21/21 - 9/8/21. or, cherrypicking that, a 0.50 ERA over 54 innings from 8/1/21 - 9/8/21.

all of those were from 2019, sorry

Karl Malone, Thursday, 17 June 2021 17:33 (four years ago)

what year is it

Karl Malone, Thursday, 17 June 2021 17:33 (four years ago)

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 17 June 2021 17:38 (four years ago)

Did you check Gibson's '68 game log? He must have had a comparable stretch.

clemenza, Thursday, 17 June 2021 17:39 (four years ago)

Gibson '68, start #12 through start #22: 8 shutouts, 0.27 ERA.

clemenza, Thursday, 17 June 2021 17:42 (four years ago)

how many innings in that stretch?

must have been at least 72 with the shutouts

O_O

Karl Malone, Thursday, 17 June 2021 17:47 (four years ago)

99 innings. Come to think of it, the two most obvious are Hershiser and Drysdale when they had their consecutive-scoreless-innings streaks. Hershiser ('88) -- 6 starts, 55 innings, 0.00; Drysdale ('68) -- 6 starts, 54 innings, 0.00.

Gibson's is easily the most impressive.

so sounds like the injury might not be anything serious

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 17 June 2021 20:09 (four years ago)

Holy shit @ that graph and video. I would like to see what other pitchers' looked like, but that seems like a huge deal.

Vin Jawn (PBKR), Thursday, 17 June 2021 20:25 (four years ago)

Yeah, that's incredible. I wonder if his arm speed is comparable too.

I checked Gooden's best stretch in '85, and it was all of Sept./Oct., in the middle of a close pennant race (remember them?) with the Cardinals: 6 starts, 53 innings, 0.34. I won't even check that Leonard guy and whatever it was they were playing 120 years ago.

clemenza, Thursday, 17 June 2021 20:29 (four years ago)

in the thread there’s a graph for dylan cease — it’s tight, but not like degrom’s

mookieproof, Thursday, 17 June 2021 20:30 (four years ago)

If I remember correctly, peak Kershaw was also ridiculously tight.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 17 June 2021 20:38 (four years ago)

There is a full video in that guy's thread that is even more impressive. You can't really tell them apart until the pitch is over and he's falling away on one of them.

Vin Jawn (PBKR), Thursday, 17 June 2021 20:57 (four years ago)

arrieta’s last 20 starts in 2015: 18-2, 147.0 IP, 147 K, 27 BB, 2 HR, 0.86 ERA

k3vin k., Friday, 18 June 2021 03:26 (four years ago)

Good one--forgot about that.

clemenza, Friday, 18 June 2021 15:51 (four years ago)

Sure I'm not the only one following: four innings so far, six strikeouts, only baserunner a 9- or 10-pitch walk to the opposing pitcher.

clemenza, Monday, 21 June 2021 22:12 (four years ago)

Thanks, I forgot today was a doubleheader. KO'd half the batters he has faced so far, nbd.

Vin Jawn (PBKR), Monday, 21 June 2021 22:20 (four years ago)

Ya, just tuned in.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 21 June 2021 22:22 (four years ago)

Glad he's starting to get some contact outs, may allow him to stick around longer.

clemenza, Monday, 21 June 2021 22:23 (four years ago)

Close call! He sets the bar too high...two baserunners and I felt panic strike.

clemenza, Monday, 21 June 2021 22:28 (four years ago)

Nah, he's at his best when he's got runners on. You can almost see him get pissed at himself.

Vin Jawn (PBKR), Monday, 21 June 2021 22:32 (four years ago)

Shame I only got to catch 1 inning

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 21 June 2021 23:04 (four years ago)

Check out the gaudy W-L record on Brad, I mean Jacob.

De Grom was inspected twice by the umpires today.

itt i try to criticize jacob degrom

it must help to have a manager who takes him out of the game before he gives up a run. he's only gone past 6 innings once since April. 12 starts, 72 innings for an average of 6 innings per game so far this year. don't get me wrong, that's great, of course! any team will take that, regardless of the ERA. but for comparison, Arrieta's final 12 starts in 2015 added up to 88 innings (7.1 IP/game, 0.41 ERA), and Flaherty's final 12 starts in 2016 were over 82 innings (almost 7 IP/game, 0.77 ERA).

and that's all i got. although i was also idly considering this terrible scenario:

what if degrom continues being superhuman this year and 2022, but then dr andrews visits him in the night and his arm mysteriously explodes soon afterward, and he ends up retiring after 2023 with a career line of 50+ WAR but less than 100 "wins". hall of famer? i guess Koufax is a comparison.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 15:46 (four years ago)

I think without the injury scares he definitely goes more innings.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:09 (four years ago)

dang, gooden's first 12 starts in 1985 covered 94 innings, and he had 16 complete games that year! seems as far away from today's game as gibson probably did to gooden's

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:17 (four years ago)

He does have a 2.74 career ERA in the 7th inning (.244/.280/.375), so obviously they are wary.

Vin Jawn (PBKR), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:29 (four years ago)

re: deGrom.

Vin Jawn (PBKR), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:30 (four years ago)

Whether he wins a third Cy would likely figure into any HOF consideration; there are no non-PED three-time Cy or MVP winners not in the HOF.

clemenza, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:58 (four years ago)

I think I said this in the other thread, but I do think he needs the third Cy, plus to be excellent for the next three years to meet the bare minimum of the hall. A no hitter plus some good post season work would also help, as would pitching well deep into his late thirties. It’s probably too early to make any predictions until he gets to the ten-year mark in 2024.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 22:18 (four years ago)

he’s getting in imo

k3vin k., Saturday, 26 June 2021 21:26 (four years ago)

Choppy day, but he got out of a bases-loaded/none-out situation with only one run. Two for the day through six innings, ERA has ballooned to 0.69. (BA up to .414...)
