the world demands to know. looks like they’re sourced from baseball savant but I can’t figure out how to find them
― k3vin k., Friday, 24 April 2020 05:57 (six years ago)
i couldn't find it on their website either, but found it through google:

as usual at baseballsavant, they don't make it easy to sort or customize their data, and they bury interesting features. for example, you can switch the filter to pitchers, and i think that gives you a look at how different pitchers do in different areas of the strike zone, which is interesting in a different way
― let me be your friend on the other end! (Karl Malone), Friday, 24 April 2020 06:16 (six years ago)
yeah, i think that's right. because it shows gerrit cole as having a -58 run value, with most of the surplus (or deficit i guess) coming from pitches in and on the edge of the zone, which makes sense for him
― let me be your friend on the other end! (Karl Malone), Friday, 24 April 2020 06:19 (six years ago)
lol, i guess all pitchers do pretty well on the edge of the zone, duh.

"Every executive lauded Betts for his incredible talent, and while each one of them would be happy to have the Dodgers superstar patrolling right field for their club, the results were nearly unanimous: Eight executives chose Trout, one took Betts, while the other one called it a draw.

The Posnanski article has some interesting points (before talking about the value of Betts having a WS ring) - I didn't realize Trout may be physically slowing down a touch. Just the rigors of playing center, or the foot surgery from a couple of seasons ago?

― Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Monday, 12 April 2021 04:36 (five years ago)
just hit his sixth homer, leads the league with 267 wRC+ now. I think it’s funny how every year there’s an article about the people who are going to surpass trout and nope, he’s the best and it’s not close
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 April 2021 20:25 (five years ago)

Seems like every year there’s also an article saying “...and he finally has a decent team behind him!”
― Michael F Gill, Thursday, 22 April 2021 17:11 (five years ago)
I wonder if he and Connor McDavid ever talk. I don’t know if either of them are household names in the U.S.
― Michael F Gill, Thursday, 22 April 2021 17:15 (five years ago)
he’s the best and it’s not close
If he keeps going like this all season, no question, still the best. But I don't agree with the "not close"--Betts, Acuna, Tatis (if he keeps going), and Soto (weaker in the field) are all close; if Trout were to go back to the level he played at last season, I think he'd be surpassed. I'd hold off on this question right now.
― clemenza, Thursday, 22 April 2021 18:05 (five years ago)
trout .393/.507/.804, 6 HR, .533 BABIP, 29% K%acuña .419/.486/.887, 7 HR, .413 BABIP, 14% K%buxton .432/.479/.977, 6 HR, .464 BABIP, 21% K%
they're all even in WAR. trout/acuña have played 16 games, buxton only 12
this sort of offense is new for buxton, but if he can maintain even a portion of it, his god-like defense will carry him a long way. (acuña is being dinged for defense thus far)
anyway none of them are likely to carry on like this, but nevertheless i wouldn't say trout is miles ahead
― mookieproof, Thursday, 22 April 2021 18:35 (five years ago)
I think the best piece of evidence for how close this is is that, going back to 2016, Betts is tied with Trout for bWAR, 38.2 each. I think most of you prefer Fangraphs: it's Trout 38.7, Betts 34.1 there. But that's still pretty close.
― clemenza, Friday, 23 April 2021 01:14 (five years ago)
and even that is with trout playing 50 fewer games. the basis of most of the articles I read is the projections which not unfairly assume trout will play less than full seasons, but when he’s suited up he’s still the goat
― k3vin k., Friday, 23 April 2021 04:05 (five years ago)
