'Faith' and Fear in Flushing has lost it:
Horrifying mental mistakes, stupefyingly dumb tantrums at umpires, ludicrous mismanagement of the bullpen and roster, listless play and innings and innings and innings of bad baseball -- which part of this rancid stew makes you want to remember your boyhood heroes, or daydream about green fields and summer nights? And should the Mets somehow pull out of their death spiral, which part of it makes you want to fork over $75 a night to watch them sleepwalk through the first week of October against the Cubs or Padres?

it's in Philly on Monday, of course.
― Dr Morbius, Friday, 28 September 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)
So this would be the biggest choke in MLB history, if I understand this right?
7 game lead with 17 to go?
― Steve Shasta, Friday, 28 September 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)
According to this
The Mets (99.80 percent on September 12th) would rank second all-time if they miss, making good on a 500-to-1 shot against.
If the D'Backs and Cubs miss, those would rank as the 7th and 12th biggest chokes in history, according to the BP methodology.

"fade" sounds much nicer than "choke"
So if the Mets are alive after Saturday, who wants to go to Shea Sunday? (Glavine's possible farewell)
― Dr Morbius, Friday, 28 September 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)
Maybe I was not listening properly, but it seemed like the Shea crowd went from chanting "LET'S GO METS" to "BOOOO!!!" within maybe a second of the first fly out reaching the air in the ninth.

The fans who envision a real Kenny Rogers Wild Pitch torture scenario are predicting they'll stay alive til the playoff at CBP on Monday.

I went to hs with a dude named Jermaine; in his yearbook half-page, he included a quote from Michael Jordan: "If I could be like 'maine"

This summarizes the emotional swings of most mets fans in a nutshell!
Tomorrow will at least be exciting.
― Michael F Gill, Saturday, 29 September 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)
Well perhaps not so exciting.
― Alex in SF, Sunday, 30 September 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)
"I don't care if it's broke," said Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who left the game after being struck on the left hand by a pitch from Maine (X-rays showed the hand was not broken). "I'm gonna play tomorrow. Fuck everybody on the Mets. I'm going to kick their asses."
― Steve Shasta, Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)
That's an amazing quote. Ah, the magic of NL East rivalries.

I sort of like that the Mets have some new adversaries besides the Braves and Yankees now. I don't think they deserve to make the playoffs after playing so half-hearted the last couples week. So many really bad losses.
Funniest part of the broadcast tonight was Gary Cohen reaping the TV promo for "Reaper".
