my compatriot!

i'm from pittsburgh. anyone who isn't from the northern nyc suburbs or isn't an insufferable front-runner hates the yankees. as they should. take it as a compliment in that no one bothers hating the pirates

mookieproof, Saturday, 24 August 2019 04:02 (six years ago)

well I still think you're a model of decorum

that's not true. people who don't know anything about baseball love the yankees too

Karl Malone, Saturday, 24 August 2019 05:09 (six years ago)

this suburb thing will come as alarming news to people from Sugar Hill and the Heights....

I've always said that being from the Bronx (originally) is the only excuse for being a NYY fan.

and Hade I will have you know that I came up with 'Stankee' by age 27.

I'm just going to assume this is in reference to beloved utility man Andy Stankiewicz

Just an awful tragedy: The wife and child of Blake Bivens, a Double-A pitcher in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, were among three people killed in rural Virginia on Tuesday, sources tell ESPN. Police have charged Bivens' wife's brother with first-degree homicide.

i see eric hosmer is having another gold glove-caliber season

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Sunday, 8 September 2019 00:05 (six years ago)

the only NL team not in that list are the marlins

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Sunday, 8 September 2019 00:07 (six years ago)

idk; i'm with jersey al here

i don't doubt that these guys are bad fielders (although i thought goldie was supposed to be good?) but i have a hard time accepting that being a bad first baseman -- who still presumably catches most of the balls thrown to him -- is as damaging as, say, being a bad outfielder

(pedro alvarez is the exception to this, of course)

mookieproof, Sunday, 8 September 2019 02:33 (six years ago)

lotta 1B in that list

k3vin k., Sunday, 8 September 2019 05:47 (six years ago)

Josh Bell is a special defensive player because he somehow makes being a bad first basemen seen just as bad, if not more damaging, than a bad outfielder. And I say this as someone who has watched Jose Martinez play a ton of right field.

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Sunday, 8 September 2019 06:01 (six years ago)

bell was an outfielder in the minors, if you can imagine

mookieproof, Sunday, 8 September 2019 06:05 (six years ago)

bad first basemen are worse than bad outfielders!

k3vin k., Sunday, 8 September 2019 06:18 (six years ago)

1B is the easiest position iirc

k3vin k., Sunday, 8 September 2019 06:18 (six years ago)

Thanks mook, and that designated hitter's WAR is artificially inflated because there is no "penalty" for their lack of defensive ability is also pretty cringeworthy when sorting these lists (not Karl's of course).

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Sunday, 8 September 2019 13:01 (six years ago)

DHs definitely get a "penalty" on defense - theirs is the largest of all!

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Sunday, 8 September 2019 16:26 (six years ago)

(which is why i made that list NL only)

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Sunday, 8 September 2019 16:26 (six years ago)

but yeah, it's hard to compare players from different positions in a "worst defense" kind of list, because of those automatically applied positional factors. (so i shouldn't have done it above - WHOOPS!) but they can still be useful when applied position-by-position. here's just 1B:

https://i.imgur.com/G1w4gVd.png

goldy near the top of the list, from that perspective

White Sox SS Tim Anderson has gotten some attention the last couple of days when he emerged with enough PAs to qualify for the AL batting title. He's in a concurrent chase: The record for fewest walks by a batting champion is 16, set by Zack Wheat in 1918. Anderson has 11.

Finishes needed for 5-way wild card tie at 87-75 (not that I am rooting for this, but I am definitely rooting for this): #Cubs 10-8, #Brewers 11-7, #Phillies 12-6, #Diamondbacks 12-5, #Mets 13-5. MLB would have to make it up because nothing on books on how to handle 5-way tie.
