i don't doubt that these guys are bad fielders (although i thought goldie was supposed to be good?) but i have a hard time accepting that being a bad first baseman -- who still presumably catches most of the balls thrown to him -- is as damaging as, say, being a bad outfielder

(pedro alvarez is the exception to this, of course)

Josh Bell is a special defensive player because he somehow makes being a bad first basemen seen just as bad, if not more damaging, than a bad outfielder. And I say this as someone who has watched Jose Martinez play a ton of right field.

bell was an outfielder in the minors, if you can imagine

bad first basemen are worse than bad outfielders!

1B is the easiest position iirc

Thanks mook, and that designated hitter's WAR is artificially inflated because there is no "penalty" for their lack of defensive ability is also pretty cringeworthy when sorting these lists (not Karl's of course).

DHs definitely get a "penalty" on defense - theirs is the largest of all!

(which is why i made that list NL only)

but yeah, it's hard to compare players from different positions in a "worst defense" kind of list, because of those automatically applied positional factors. (so i shouldn't have done it above - WHOOPS!) but they can still be useful when applied position-by-position. here's just 1B:

White Sox SS Tim Anderson has gotten some attention the last couple of days when he emerged with enough PAs to qualify for the AL batting title. He's in a concurrent chase: The record for fewest walks by a batting champion is 16, set by Zack Wheat in 1918. Anderson has 11.
