Marcus Stroman on fellow Long Island native Steven Matz:

"I played baseball with Steven Matz my whole upbringing. Every travel team I was on when I was younger, he was on my team. ... It's going to be crazy to join him on this staff."

Other teams selling pitchers are very annoyed at the Blue Jays return for Stroman, which one rival called “dogs*it.” If that’s all it took to get Stroman, fear is the price goes down for other pitchers unde control

The Mets have Marcus Stroman lined up to make his debut Saturday in Pittsburgh, in what would have been Jason Vargas' rotation spot.

need to make Diaz as much of a nonfactor as possible; no 1-run leads in the 9th

I was looking at the Mets' roster this morning, and I would think their Top 3 starters + Alonso + McNeil would give them at least a decent chance at a wild-card. On the other hand, I was also thinking that yesterday's Sanchez deal (supposedly he and Stroman, former friends, had a falling out at some point) was another way of sticking it to Stroman: "Okay, you're going to the Mets, and you're going to the Astros."

mets might be a case of how being an awful defensive team is hard to quantify

mookieproof, Thursday, 1 August 2019 15:33 (six years ago)

the metrics are doing a fair job of that (28th in team defense last i looked)

4 games out of the wild card with 54 games to play doesn’t sound too bad, even if the majority of those games are against over .500 teams.

It's almost comical how pitchers continue to throw Jeff McNeil first-pitch strikes. Isn't this what scouting reports are for? He's now batting .416/.423/.883 with nine of his 14 home runs on the first pitch of an at-bat.

If you were to graft Alonsos' first half with McNeil's second half, you might have one of the greatest rookie seasons in quite a long time.

Nationals line up three top available pitchers for this weekend in New York — Stephen Strasburg, Patrick Corbin and Aníbal Sánchez moved up to go on normal rest. The Mets have Marcus Stroman, Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom. Big weekend.

The Mets' active 13-1 run is their best 14-game stretch in 29 years.
