dan straily: 34.2 IP, 18 K, 17 BB, 14 HR

i mean what do you even say to the guy except 'we're the orioles, so we're gonna run you out there again in five days'

honestly I think I enjoy shift-beating bunts more than anything in the game right now

otm. home runs are over, shift-beating bunts are where it's at.

it's crazy how both this and the cobb signing were deeply shitty in the exact same way.... minus the giant contract in straily's case

J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 May 2019 16:46 (five years ago) link

tbf alex cobb was pretty good before the TJ surgery. dan straily . . . had a nice season in the minors in 2012

mookieproof, Thursday, 23 May 2019 17:07 (five years ago) link

if you can bunt for a single AND cause the opposing pitcher to stroke out then yeah, its almost better than a home run

Subjective observation that may or may not be true: I don't ever remember so many teams, day in and day out, scoring 10+ runs a game. It feels like three or four teams do it every day. Are runs historically high this year, or am I just fixating on a few games?

clemenza, Saturday, 25 May 2019 22:23 (four years ago) link

Up a fifth of a run from last year, identical to 2017, half a run lower than PED peak. So no. Maybe it's a distribution thing.

clemenza, Saturday, 25 May 2019 22:27 (four years ago) link

i am willing to believe that because, especially in the AL, we have some really good teams and some disastrously awful ones, that there are more blowouts than usual. but i have no data for it

mookieproof, Saturday, 25 May 2019 22:59 (four years ago) link

Here are run totals of 10+ the last couple of weeks, both leagues:

May 11: 13, 11, 12, 17
May 12: 11, 15, 10, 10
May 13: none
May 14: 11, 14, 11
May 15: 11
May 16: 11, 17, 16, 14, 10, 11
May 17: 14, 12, 10
May 18: 18
May 19: 13, 10
May 20: 12, 10, 10
May 21: 11, 10
May 22: 11, 10 (and four teams score 9)
May 23: 14, 16
May 24: 12, 10, 10, 11, 18
May 25: 19 (so far--thanks, Jays)

That can't possibly be normal.

clemenza, Saturday, 25 May 2019 23:46 (four years ago) link

there probably aren't that many pitchers who have given up a grand slam in their first big league inning, so congrats to mitch keller for joining an elite group

bell is a great hitter this year, but he gives away half of his value in the field and he can't run

On Tuesday, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand that the Yankees and Braves had emerged as frontrunners for Keuchel, with offers in the same ballpark. Soon after, however, a second source told Feinsand that the Yankees appear to be the true favorites, with Atlanta part of a second tier of suitors, including the Twins and possibly the Cardinals.
