Raul Ibanez wasn't exactly a WAR beast but he didn't start hitting until he was almost 30. I think his 20s WAR was 0.something and in his thirties it was a robust 20.something.
― omar little, Thursday, 26 April 2018 17:23 (eight years ago)
Would 30s WAR as percentage of career WAR be a better yardstick? Maybe with a career minimum of 25 or something.
― WilliamC, Thursday, 26 April 2018 17:29 (eight years ago)
Edgar might be the winner by those criteria, judging by the data in Karl Malone's list.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 26 April 2018 17:51 (eight years ago)
just me or are there an unusual number of day games today?
― k3vin k., Thursday, 26 April 2018 17:52 (eight years ago)
Would 30s WAR as percentage of career WAR be a better yardstick? Maybe with a career minimum of 25 or something.Yeah, that’s a good idea! I’ll check that out too, once I get home
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 26 April 2018 17:55 (eight years ago)
That @Braves fan who caught Ronald Acuña Jr.'s first home run? He drove up from Atlanta just to see the game. @KelsWingert has more: pic.twitter.com/ADHVr3fVil— FOX Sports: Braves (@FOXSportsBraves) April 26, 2018
this is incredible. braves fan drives from atlanta to cincinnati to see acuna play. catches his first career home run, without missing a beat grabs his backpack and sprints out of the stadium. negotiations with braves ongoing. fucking hero
― k3vin k., Thursday, 26 April 2018 18:38 (eight years ago)

(minimum 25 WAR, as suggested by WilliamC)
that is a list of baseball players

one thing i've always heard about cravath - he really hit his stride in his 30s
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 26 April 2018 22:25 (eight years ago)
Cool! Thanks for running those numbers, Karl. (Of course now I'm curious about players with significant WAR in their 40s.)
― WilliamC, Thursday, 26 April 2018 22:59 (eight years ago)
phil niekro: 25.5 in his 40sroger clemens: 22.2
― mookieproof, Thursday, 26 April 2018 23:04 (eight years ago)
i can't imagine any hitters coming close to that . . . unless they'd let bonds play
― mookieproof, Thursday, 26 April 2018 23:08 (eight years ago)
Nolan Ryan: 31.1
― WilliamC, Thursday, 26 April 2018 23:09 (eight years ago)
nolan ryan had 30+ fWAR in his 40s
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 26 April 2018 23:10 (eight years ago)
xpost oops! but yep
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 26 April 2018 23:11 (eight years ago)
Could somebody remind me how age-season is calculated for birthdays in the middle of the season? If someone's birthdate is, say, 7/24/64, is 2004 their age-39 season or age-40 season?
― WilliamC, Thursday, 26 April 2018 23:20 (eight years ago)
from baseball-reference: player's age at midnight june 30th of that year
― k3vin k., Thursday, 26 April 2018 23:22 (eight years ago)
(you can see it if you hover over the age column)
Ah, thanks. Tough luck for Barry Bonds, then, who had 11.9 WAR in his age 39 season and 7.1 in his 40s.
― WilliamC, Thursday, 26 April 2018 23:26 (eight years ago)
Reds pitching staff is a grease fire but watching the four game Braves series, I was pretty impressed by the Cobb County lineup. Ender Inciarte also has a really good arm in the outfield, he played some impressive center field.

Definitely some wear on the Twins bullpen treads. They successfully went Zach Duke, Addison Reed and Fernando Rodney to close out the Reds today.

― frogbs, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 02:13 (eight years ago)
good thing they didn't waste him in the cubs series
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 02:40 (eight years ago)
I don't think they ever had a lead in that series
― frogbs, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 02:44 (eight years ago)
mega bummer about seager
― k3vin k., Tuesday, 1 May 2018 03:16 (eight years ago)
braves are calling up 20yo RHP (and calgary native) mike soroka to start tonight. don't see too many high school pitchers arrive that quickly
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 16:56 (eight years ago)
pretty nice debut
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 01:24 (eight years ago)
I'm glad the bullpen and D held it for him -- they looked like they were trying to give it up late.
― WilliamC, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 02:47 (eight years ago)
Trout sent one 524 feet.
― WilliamC, Thursday, 3 May 2018 02:24 (eight years ago)
Wait. What? really?! Whoa
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 3 May 2018 05:02 (eight years ago)
Sure doesn't look to be that far on replay (and the game report doesn't say anything to that effect).
