looks like the return package is Luke Dykstra (son of lenny) and pitchers John Gant and Chris Ellis.

jfc what is atlanta doing trading prospects

qualx, Friday, 2 December 2016 00:20 (seven years ago) link

none of them are good

mookieproof, Friday, 2 December 2016 00:23 (seven years ago) link

Garcia was only owed $12 million for 2017. I was hoping they'd get more in return for him, or that he could be a part of a larger package to get a CF.

Oh well

Karl Malone, Friday, 2 December 2016 01:00 (seven years ago) link

still probably more useful to atlanta in 2017 than jaime garcia will be

qualx, Friday, 2 December 2016 01:00 (seven years ago) link

xp

qualx, Friday, 2 December 2016 01:00 (seven years ago) link

i mean i guess i'll eat my hat if atlanta actually competes next year but maybe not? they shouldn't be doing anything to make them worse in 2018 and beyond for an injured one-year guy. they're doing that very stupid thing where the horrible team improves in the second half and they start thinking way too soon. it could happen next year but why risk it for a bunch of old pitchers

they should still be selling teheran

qualx, Friday, 2 December 2016 01:03 (seven years ago) link

if the prospects truly are meh, then it's a great deal for atlanta. jaime is actually really good. it's not hard for me to imagine him outperforming everyone on both the cardinals and braves pitching staffs next year, and if he does, the barves could flip him at the trade deadline for a nice ROI

Karl Malone, Friday, 2 December 2016 01:14 (seven years ago) link

dykstra can hit (in low a) but zero power
gant might have some promise but not a lot
ellis walked 87 batters (fifth-most in the minors) in 146 innings this year

only owed $12 million for 2017

ikr? the pirates had to send prospects along *with* francisco liriano to get out from under the $13.6m he's owed this year. and yeah he was putrid last year (in pittsburgh; somewhat better in toronto) but steamer still has him at 2 WAR for 2017

that fuckin trade is gonna be even better when the pirates non-tender drew hutchison tomorrow

sorry, still bitter

mookieproof, Friday, 2 December 2016 01:27 (seven years ago) link

in other news, the orioles have acquired logan schafer and logan verrett within two days of each other

i was gonna make a moneyball joke but i looked up "logan" on fangraphs and wow white people really liked that name in the 80s

qualx, Friday, 2 December 2016 06:07 (seven years ago) link

@sdutdennislin
Woah. The Padres non-tendered Tyson Ross, Alexi Amarista, Jon Edwards, Erik Johnson, Jose Pirela and Hector Sanchez.

$48 million! good for him, that's a great story. i was a bit worried he'd be the reason the cubs would fail in the NLCS if it went to game 7 but i was happy for him. through this season he'd made like $3 million over his entire career.

nomar, Monday, 5 December 2016 18:20 (seven years ago) link

that's more or less what EW Podcast thought he would get, right?

ein Sexmonster (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 5 December 2016 18:33 (seven years ago) link

All great deals imo (Melancon and Hill and Beltran)

Van Horn Street, Monday, 5 December 2016 20:13 (seven years ago) link

Also Steve Pearce to the Jays. 2 years, 12.5 m$

Van Horn Street, Monday, 5 December 2016 20:15 (seven years ago) link

one team away from the full AL East experience

mint challop (Will M.), Monday, 5 December 2016 20:44 (seven years ago) link

Rich Hill's deal is good for him, but 3 years for a guy at age 37 with his injury track record even for well as he pitched last year seems a huge stretch to me. But hey it's the Dodgers, they have blown far more money than that on players in the past few years and anything that might lead to them losing is not a bad thing.

earlnash, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 00:33 (seven years ago) link

supposedly the dodgers think they can get 120 innings per year out of him -- something he's only accomplished once, in 2007

someone pointed out that hill is both older than and has fewer career strikeouts than . . . mark prior

mookieproof, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 02:20 (seven years ago) link

it's weird that everyone talks about him assuming he'll throw like an ace when he's healthy. even great pitchers with great age-36 seasons are expected to drop off at any moment

his injuries mask his age. or maybe he should've been the best pitcher of all time

qualx, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 02:21 (seven years ago) link

otoh he's been really good his 35 and 36 year old seasons, his injury this year was a blister, and there are limited good pitching options right now

@jjcoop36
If this trade goes through, Dombrowski has traded 4 of top 5 prospects in Red Sox system who were there when he arrived.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 18:22 (seven years ago) link

price, sale, porcello is a nice 1-2-3, for one year at least.

v. lefty-heavy rotation at the moment

mookieproof, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 18:30 (seven years ago) link

very money themed too... price, sale, sounds-like-buck-holds

why ruin a good tradition? (Will M.), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 18:33 (seven years ago) link

nomar, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 18:38 (seven years ago) link

na (NA), Wednesday, 7 December 2016 16:46 (seven years ago) link

ian desmond seems like a poor choice to cost you the 11th overall pick.
