i'm so happy that i watched his last start. and he was dominant -- according to fangraphs' version of game score, it was the best start of his career. 8 IP, 12 Ks, 3H, 0 BB

After Kershaw, I'm not sure there was a better pitcher in baseball. Who knows what kind of career he could have gone on to have.

Jose Fernandez, front row, third from the right in the yellow hat. (His good friend Aledmys Diaz also in the front row, wearing a red hat)
That infamous GIF above is so good because you can just tell how well liked and respected Fernandez was, even when he was trouncing people. He will be missed.

Casey McGehee and Fernandez were teammates in Miami in 2014 and half of 2015. The news hit him every bit as hard as it hit Iglesias. Fernandez formed a special bond with McGehee’s son Mack, who has cerebral palsy.“The toughest part for me is having to tell my son what happened,” McGehee said. “A lot of people, they don’t really know how to treat Mack. For some reason, Jose had a heart for him. You get to the field, and it wasn’t like ‘Hey, Jose, do you want to keep an eye on him?’ Jose would come and grab him, and they were together from the time they got on the field to the time my wife came to pick him up.“I think that really says a lot about what was truly in his heart, and what kind of guy he was.”

this is the worst, really. he was imo on the cusp of becoming better than kershaw and reeling off some kind of ridiculous pedro level of dominance over the next 7-8 years.
― nomar, Monday, 26 September 2016 17:44 (nine years ago)
yup. you ask what pitcher you would want on your team and after Kershaw it is (was) Fernandez without any hesitation, in my mind.

i didn't get around to this my piece but i always felt like... a certain urgency in watching jose. given his past TJ surgery and the sheer explosion of all his pitches i couldn't help but think about his elbow snapping again, even when he was in the midst of mowing some team down. watching him was like 98% exhilaration and 2% fear that it would all just be taken away again, maybe this time for good, but obviously his fucking death just does not feel real in any way shape or form.
i got to see him earlier this season vs the tigers from two rows behind home plate. he had one of those weird games where he was practically unhittable but when he did get touched the ball went a long way. he struck out 13 in 5.2 innings but also gave up 5 ER--i think it was the only time a loss went onto his record in a home start. needless to say, seeing him from that close, i literally have no idea how anyone ever got a hit off him, his breaking pitches seemed inconceivable

Jeff Passan:
This sounded bad. Bernal had ridden on a boat at night once, and it was terrifying. Not just the darkness, but the choppy waves from the rain earlier in the day and the threat of other boats and the objects obscured by the night.
“I told him it was a horrible idea,” Bernal said. “Do everything you can to get him off the boat. Do whatever you can to get him on land.”
... After Saturday’s game, Fernandez had asked a number of teammates to join him on the boat. One by one, they declined. And there they were Monday, back in uniform, the uniform he was supposed to be wearing, too, thinking that if not for the instinct that told them to say no, it could’ve been them.
