ichiro 3-4 today with a double and a SB, six hits shy of 3k now

nomar, Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:05 (nine years ago)

Is he getting a lot of playing time right now? I wonder if they'll hold him out the next 4 games so he gets to 3000 at home.

mookieproof, Saturday, 30 July 2016 01:59 (nine years ago)

Kind of a messy game, but Ichiro threw out a runner at home which made for a pretty good night.

The Marlins Park PA pumped out maybe the most godawful musical sewage i've heard at a major-league game. I can only imagine what the clubs are like down here.

Besides Mattingly and Barry!, we got pregame talks from Andre Dawson and Tony Perez. And saw the Red Grooms thing go off.

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 30 July 2016 03:27 (nine years ago)

Congrats Ichiro -- would have been funny if it had gone out.

I'm bored out of my skull right now, so I tried to name all 30. Got 27; put down two incorrect names; of the three I missed, one is really embarrassing, one moderately, and the other would probably be a common miss.

2003 nostalgists may enjoy this panel. I can't give you the timestamp, but McKeon tells a tall story about using a clothesline to rein in a baserunner when he was managing the Missoula Timberjacks in the '50s.

Sadly, I can confirm that Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident.

Andy K, Sunday, 25 September 2016 13:08 (nine years ago)

Terrible. "I'm glad I saw him pitch" doesn't cover it.

A third of the way through writing why Jose Fernandez is the best pitcher in the game in 2016, I got the news...God bless his grandmother...

and everyone in his intrepid, great family

Andy K, Sunday, 25 September 2016 13:45 (nine years ago)

Awful. This is tough to process.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 25 September 2016 13:58 (nine years ago)

Fernandez was killed Sunday morning after a boat crash in Miami Beach, the team announced.

The 24-year-old Fernandez was one of at least three people killed in the early morning collision. He announced on Instagram recently that he and his girlfriend were expecting a child, Local 10 reported.

Chief Petty Officer Nyxolyno Cangemi told The Associated Press that a Coast Guard patrol boat spotted an overturned boat at 3:30 a.m. on a jetty near Government Cut. The bodies were discovered a short time later.

Because the boat was on a jetty, the Coast Guard notified Miami-Dade police, which turned the investigation over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Fernandez was on a 32-foot vessel that had a "severe impact" with a jetty, said Lorenzo Veloz of the Fish Commission. A news conference was planned for later Sunday morning.

Can't think of anybody in any professional sport who was this dominant and died this young. Len Bias, the college basketball player, is the only name that comes to mind.

Not playing captain save a captain, but I suppose one could say that I doubt ESPN would not have lit into Roger Goodell or Adam Silver in the same way and that would be true. ESPN doesn't seem to give a shite about baseball on a good day, so it's not surprising.

Marlins are into their third extinction cycle. Their team existence is some type of weird Chinatown real estate scam, just looping suckers into buying high. Loria was able to flip $158 millon of borrowed money into selling a club for over a billion dollars and he got a world series ring. Who is laughing now?

earlnash, Saturday, 23 December 2017 23:48 (eight years ago)

I doubt ESPN would not have lit into Roger Goodell or Adam Silver in the same way

i think it's more that le batard dgaf -- i'm sure the espn execs (who aren't high) aren't happy

but lol at manfred expecting every single media hit to service him, even from a guy who got banned from voting for the hof

Mattingly said three rotation spots are up for grabs. Dan Straily and Jose Urena are the locks, barring something unforeseen. @Marlins Wei-Yin Chen not expected to be ready by Opening Day #SpringTraining2018

— Joe Frisaro (@JoeFrisaro) February 14, 2018

the rotation won't be any better

mookieproof, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 18:38 (eight years ago)

While Giancarlo Stanton and Christian Yelich were happy to be traded by the Miami Marlins, right-hander Dan Straily says he wants to be a cornerstone of the team's rebuilding plan.

And that's not all.

"I'm glad they're gone," Straily said Friday. "If they don't want to be here, good for them."

lolol
