Nice to see that the NY baseball media can find such a positive spin on Glavine's 300th win. Criminy I think some of these guys would write a negative column the day the Mets win the World Series.
http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/ny-sbwally065322490aug06,0,6128268.column
I also don't get the whole spin that no one will ever win 300 again. They were saying the same thing around the time the guys from the 70s were hitting 300 wins like Carlton, Sutton, Seaver etc. It is a pretty rare feat, especially if you consider there was quite a few from guys that played from the mid 60s to mid 80s.
Carlton -1983 Seaver -1985 Sutton -1986 Niekro -1985 Ryan -1990 Perry -1982
That is about 1/4 of the people who have won 300. The fact that there have been 3 from this generation of players is pretty good. Ryan was the only one of these guys to win his 300th game in the 90s.
Glavine - 2007 Maddux - 2004 Clemens - 2003
So if you look things, it was thirteen years between Clemens and Ryan.
Wynn - 1963 Spahn - 1961
So it was twenty years between Wynn and Carlton.
It might be a few years, but it will probably happen again.

someone like Mussina might do it if he pitches til he's 44.
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 13:23 (eighteen years ago)
I will be braving the Shea steambath for Duque-Smoltz tnite. Maybe Willie will notice Milledge is afire and not hit him motherfucking 8th.
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)
I don't know, I really like him in the 8 spot. It's like a second leadoff hitter down there.
― Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)
What a game, Wagner with the bases loaded/no out escape, Castillo and Alou with the heroics. I bet Morbs is happy.
― Michael F Gill, Thursday, 9 August 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)
i almost had a coronary at approximately 9:57 p.m. ET
― maura, Thursday, 9 August 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)
Seriously! Wagner started throwing the right pitches in a hurry though.
― Michael F Gill, Thursday, 9 August 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)
yes, Wags' Johnny Franco act has passed its fresh date.
Also, some drunken Braves-rooting bimbo was trying to take a pic of her friends in rows behind me while Alou was batting, so I was distracted when he hit the HR. She then yowled "Let's Go Mets" and left. I see myself going to the new park maybe twice a year because of ambulatory shit like that, plus The Wave in the middle of visitor rallies, etc. Fuck people.
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 9 August 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)
did pedro look big (too much gravy?) to anyone else?
― bnw, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)
if it was a johnny franco act, he would've blown it.
― hstencil, Thursday, 9 August 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)
also reason enough to go to the new mets park (courtesy maura):

― cankles, Thursday, 9 August 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)
i can't be mad, i'm amazed harris is having such a good year.
― hstencil, Thursday, 9 August 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)
yeah same. he is a local guy too!
also, francoeur is turning out a lot better than i expected.
― cankles, Thursday, 9 August 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)
Harris robbed two homers? I saw the first one (but maybe that one wasn't quite over the wall).
― Andy K, Friday, 10 August 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, two. the alou one and the delgado one in the 9th.
harris has to be a top contender for comeback player of the year, right?
― maura, Saturday, 11 August 2007 01:03 (eighteen years ago)
anyway NO MORE BRAVES TALK IN THIS THREAD. welcome back carlos!!!
― maura, Saturday, 11 August 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)
if the season was just 162 games of braves v mets, atlanta would have the best record in the league. too bad the mets are better than them against every other team :'(
― cankles, Saturday, 11 August 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)
not too bad. any team that can't attract fans to its own park during the playoffs... ahem
― maura, Saturday, 11 August 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)
actually they've set new attendance records these last two seasons! last year against the mets, and again this year against the phillies. i think the fact that they actually have to compete for a shot at the division instead of waltzing into the playoffs is generating way more interest~
― cankles, Saturday, 11 August 2007 02:09 (eighteen years ago)
ok, fair enough then!
― maura, Saturday, 11 August 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)
OK, THAT was a Franco act.
I think yr 162-game hypoth is crap, but we'll never know, shall we?
― Dr Morbius, Saturday, 11 August 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)
but we'll never know, shall we?

― Dr Morbius, Monday, 13 August 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)
that bannister kid is having a pretty decent year for an awful royals team, why did we get rid of him again? he would look pretty nice in the 5 spot right about now.
― gershy, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 02:37 (eighteen years ago)
the royals aren't awful this year! they are on pace for winning 75 games this year, and possibly not finishing in last place. that is huge for them.
― Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)
good lord, it is so good to have alou back. and i really didn't think i'd be saying that at all when he was signed.
― maura, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

― hstencil, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)
