This was Monday Night Baseball!
A+ for showing the pre-game stuff as well.
Not sure how Holtzman was able to pitch like that.

Awesome torrent of idiocy on stats and the almighty power of elderly scouts (after an even-handed bit on BP/PECOTA from Vasgersian) by Reynolds, Casey, Larkin. Keywords: winners, character, straw hat, stogie, laptop, calculator, touch and feel.

From the 1976 Fidrych game: "Billy Martin, manager. Born in Berkeley, California, died in New York."
― Maltodextrin, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 07:11 (fifteen years ago) link
? did Curt Gowdy say this?
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 11:53 (fifteen years ago) link
It was Martin, during the introductions.
― Andy K, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 11:56 (fifteen years ago) link
ha! I saw that game when it originally aired. I think '76 was my first year of really understanding baseball, the boxscores etc

I caught only the last 20 secs of the Stats Suck panel. Reynolds: "Pete Rose wouldn't play today; Tom Seaver wouldn't play today." WHAT????
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 14:24 (fifteen years ago) link
LOOOOOOOL at some of Reynolds SB/CS numbers: 35/29 in 1988, 25/18 in 1989, 15/12 in 1992, 12/11 in 1993.

Imagining Reynolds on Reynolds: "Now here is a speed guy you can pencil in for 10, 20, 30 stolen bases EVERY SINGLE SEASON."
And for having such a hard-on for smallball, he sure didn't move over many runners.

"In 1988 you'll notice that most of the times I was caught stealing, it was the third out of the inning and I was taking one for the team because we knew Henry Cotto could do special things leading off that next inning, rather than with two outs and me on first."

h.r. and Joe Magrane are delighted that Cito Gaston has had Toronto abandon the "deep counts" philosophy to "swing the bat." Is there any basis of reality to this?
they really need to retire that screamo track they play at EVERY FUCKING BREAK.

they're showing the '86 Dave Henderson Boston-Angels game right now. (i'd forgotten Hendu tipped a Grich fly over the fence.)

That was interesting to watch again. Great catches by Rice and Downing in key situations. The Gary Pettis/Devon White/Ruppert Jones experience. And Rob Wilfong!

Not 100% sure if I heard HR correctly, but I believe he said Mauer hurts his case for MVP because HE IS A CATCHER, which means he cannot play every day, unlike Derek Jeter.
And I think I heard him say that Mauer played in 130 games (he played 138) while Jeter played every day (actually 153), for a 32 game difference (technically less than half of that, but whatever).
― Andy K, Friday, 6 November 2009 17:03 (fourteen years ago) link
HR said JM played in 110 games -- cherry picking that he had, in fact, played in 138 games (DH, etc).

Mauer was injured for the start of the season, and returned on May 1st. He missed 22 games because of injury. Besides the injury, he only missed two games. So what the fuck is harold on about.

have they thought this part through
