it's 10 teams so it's already pretty shallow, but i also got some good pitchers in there too

like jon niese, who is projected to make more points than all of them except pujols

14 teams small roster league I made up a couple of years ago - AVG, HR, RBI, net steals, OPS, R; 2xW-L, net saves, K/9, QS, ERA, WHIP
it's as stat-friendly as I can get the locals

I was having some trouble running the auction (noisy sports bar) and I'm not totally enamored of my team. Also totes fucked if Ryan Braun gets suspended, I dropped $68 of our $250 budget on him.

12-team traditional rotisserie league, $300 cap - I won it my first year playing in 1991 w/ Cecil Fielder and Bobby Thigpen leading the charge; I don't remember collecting winnings as a 10-year old, tbh, so I think I might have gotten screwed. I think I've managed to win every 4-5 years since then on average.
I had to throw back Jason Heyward @17, Mike Napoli@17, Billy Butler@27, some other good ones due to keeper restrictions. But I have Strasburg and Bryce Harper cheap and some other quality youth cheap - prices increase by a schedule every year, so if you keep a $16-21 player this year, he's $22 next year then $27 and on up until $52 where the price sticks.

C - Arencibia $3
C - Posey $17
1B - Rizzo $7
2B - Uggla $11 - I really wanted Jedd Gyorko here but I started bidding on Uggla and I don't know why
3B - Beltre $27
SS - Castro $12
1/3 - Alvarez $17
2/S - Jeter $8 - there was no one left, fuck fuck fuck
OF - Bourn $21
OF - Harper $7
OF - Adam Jones $22
OF - Markakis $6
OF - BJ Upton $35 - oh shit have him in two leagues fuck
UT - VERNON WELLS - lol cut him for the best free agent left

Josh Beckett - $1
AJ Burnett - $4
AJ Griffin - $5
Dan Haren - $7
Hellickson - $8
Motte - $12 - hope you don't need a new elbow, bro
Niese - $7
Parnell - $5
Strasburg - $17
Verlander - $27

Minors:
Travis D'Arnaud
Leonys Martin
Manny Banuelos
Archie Bradley
Dylan Bundy

I tend to blow off saves and try to get them during the season, but our auctions don't really work out for going with super-cheap pitching so I never quite nail down the LIMA plan/etc.

also two big roster (24 active, 10 reserve, 5 minors) draft leagues but they're boring and I only play in them because I always have. Auctions are so much better. If you've only played draft or online, find a local group and have an auction league!

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 04:27 (eleven years ago) link

Second one I have buyer's remorse on keeping Adam Jones @ $22 over Heyward @ $17, but I think Jones has a lower floor for this year at least.

was thinking the same thing on castro

sanskrit, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 02:40 (eleven years ago) link

Posey, Rizzo, Castro, Harper, Strasburg all started out in my minors
first year call-up, the salary is $5, goes up to $7 then up in $5 increments every year. If you pay attention to your minors, you can build a solid, cheap core. I'm jelly of the guy who beat me to Trout in the minor league draft.

The only thing that's screwed me is that we only protect 6 position players/4 pitchers max. Everyone else uses Baseball America or w/e for their minors draft, so they wind up with single-A shortstops who can't hit beyond the five or six guys who get a lot of press.

with grandy off the dl and heyward hitting better, i had a v packed OF -- those 2 + bautista, rios, de aza and aoki for four spots. and ben zobies can move over in a pinch. so i just traded rios for aj burnett w/a dude with a whole lot of pitching desperate for a OF. sort of surprised he jumped on it so quickly, sort of worried abt burnett being a million yrs old

three weeks pass...

I'm overthinknig this so much. In the finals vs. a guy I really don't want to win my other glorping league. Starting to overthink this.

7/9 of my starters are decided -- the rest of my team is "stacked" on paper but seriously having my doubts. I'm starting Trout and Harper in the OF (big trade last year & this year to get them in a keeper league, awwww yeeeeah), but I need to start another OF and another U. Who would you pick from this list?

Swisher (hot), Jupton (not so much + lots of righties), Granderson (cold), Butler (hmmmmm), Kemp (ugh), Ellsbury (injured until at least Wednesday). Rosters get locked tonight for the week, btw.

Any thoughts?

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Monday, 23 September 2013 16:54 (ten years ago) link

You have Trout, Harper, Granderson, Butler, Kemp, and Ellsbury on the same team? Jeez.

polyphonic, Monday, 23 September 2013 17:35 (ten years ago) link

It's a super shallow 8 team league, and I made a massive trade near the deadline shipping out my late round goldmine Chris Davis (along with the Tigers pitching staff and Ian Desmond) getting Grandy, Jupton and Harper back. It was a pretty lopsided pull but the other guy was out of the running and wanted a keeper for next year who'd give him a big advantage (Davis over Jupton or Harper or Grandy makes sense).

Year before I traded the same guy Fielder and got Trout. Which at the time might have looked like kind of an over-pay... that one worked out. :) The others -- Kemp, keeper; Ellsbury, fell realllly far in the draft for some reason; Butler, mid-round pick that hasn't really been good enough for my starting nine (did I mention I jumped super early on Goldschmidt, too?)

^^ post obviously honoring and supporting Qualcomm (zachlyon), Sunday, 29 September 2013 23:37 (ten years ago) link

at the very end of the very last games played today, every single thing went wrong to prevent me from taking third place and $125

-tulo walks instead of making an out
-venable gets a useless hit, giving denorfia one last chance to make an out, which he does
-pence gets the walkoff, preventing sandoval from giving me one last chance to get a hit and tie BA
-rex fucking brothers loads the bases in the bottom of the ninth with a 1-run lead and fails to fucking continue failing
-ron fucking washington decides to continue abusing his elderly pitchers and goes with nathan for the bottom of the ninth after using him the previous 3 days, rather than letting the young, virile scheppers get the two-inning save

and none of this would've been a problem if it weren't for PEDRO FUCKING STROP, EX-ORIOLE BENT ON REVENGE AGAINST ME PERSONALLY, giving up a useless run to STL, ensuring that there wouldn't be a save opportunity for trevor rosenthal.

JUST ONE of these things happening/not happening is the difference between nothing and $125. I NEED $125

^^ post obviously honoring and supporting Qualcomm (zachlyon), Sunday, 29 September 2013 23:49 (ten years ago) link

shld mention, this was a two week matchup, and this is what our final batting averages looked like:

me: 148/539
him: 148/538

if i had tied it would've given me the win

^^ post obviously honoring and supporting Qualcomm (zachlyon), Sunday, 29 September 2013 23:53 (ten years ago) link

I was just one home run away from $160 yesterday

I was down by 40 points (a huge amount) and in the last day managed to pull back to tied (unreal) and Beltre hit a homer, and Goldschmidt didn't

at least when it wasn't close my hopes weren't up

dunno the stats you track, or what the people in your league value, but when i have a tough pick (esp between a pitcher and a batter) i try to figure out which one is most likely to still be available in the last pick of the first round. if you think you can grab one in the redraft, drop that one.

Sam Malone, no relation (Will M.), Sunday, 9 March 2014 20:57 (ten years ago) link

the keepers are so pointless it doesn't matter, it's just a 3-keeper league and my other 2 are cabrera and yu. my plan is just "pick the top three players according to ADP" and because mockdraftcentral has bautista way higher than scherzer, i figured i'd take him. and then ESPN actually started drafting and scherzer's like 10 spots higher than jose (this is an ESPN league). MDC rankings are always better but i'm actually not sure who value more. probably going with jose but it's annoying.

my other team name: Machado About Nothing. i am very proud of this one.

Werth
Ryu
Wacha
Matt Moore

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 14:14 (ten years ago) link

wacha/moore over ryu. i'd lean wacha between the two personally, but moore might be a better option depending on your league (ie. which one is worth more in trade value? which one can you not just redraft later?).

that said tho, i haven't mentioned werth bc you need to rule out 2 SPs... the real question is, does it make more sense to keep a pretty great OF or a pretty great SP in your league? i'd say odds are werth is the best option in most leagues, but i dunno yours.

Sam Malone, no relation (Will M.), Wednesday, 12 March 2014 18:27 (ten years ago) link

My team name in the ILX league I was pretty satisfied w/, so I put it in and left it (Villar Love Triangle). However in my other league I completely haven't come up with one I like so far... lowlights include Imagine Pagans, Pauliment Funkagoldschmidt, and my most recent, STROP LORD.
