DODGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH RIGHT-HANDER JEFF WEAVER ON MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACT
WITH AN INVITATION TO MAJOR LEAGUE SPRING TRAINING
Left-hander Shawn Estes and right-handers Ronald Belisario, Charlie Haeger, and Tanyon Sturtze
also agree to terms on minor league deals with invitations to big league camp

LOS ANGELES – The National League West Division Champion Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to terms with right-hander Jeff Weaver on a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League spring training. The club has also agreed to terms with left-hander Shawn Estes and right-handers Ronald Belisario, Charlie Haeger, and Tanyon Sturtze on minor league deals with invitations to big league camp. General Manager Ned Colletti made the announcement.

Weaver is a veteran of nine Major League seasons, including two with the Dodgers from 2004-05. Weaver, whom the Dodgers acquired from the Yankees in the Kevin Brown deal, went 27-24 with a 4.11 ERA in 68 starts while in a Dodger uniform. He is 93-114 with a 4.72 ERA in 284 games (267 starts) overall with Detroit (1999-2002), New York Yankees (2002-03), Los Angeles Dodgers (2004-05), Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2006), St. Louis (2006), and Seattle (2007).

The Fullerton native has appeared in four postseasons, including one World Series in 2006 with St. Louis. He went 1-1 with a 2.77 ERA (4 ER/13.0 IP) in two Fall Classic starts, and was the winning pitcher in the Cardinals’ Game 5 clincher over Detroit at Busch Stadium. In nine postseason appearances (six starts) overall, he is 3-4 with a 4.03 ERA (17 ER/38.0 IP).

Weaver was a first-round pick of Detroit in the 1998 draft, going 14th overall. His brother Jered pitches for the Angels.

85 healthy innings last year between Nashville and Buffalo (16 tacos surrendered in 13 starts)!

Had forgotten how fast he was run through the Tiger system (seven starts).

Jeff Weaver aims for comeback

11:07 PM PST on Monday, February 23, 2009

By DIAMOND LEUNG
The Press-Enterprise

PHOENIX - Jeff Weaver was flipping through channels when he came upon the MLB Network replaying Game 5 of the 2006 World Series.

Until then, Weaver hadn't seen a tape of himself tossing eight innings for the win that night to clinch the championship for the St. Louis Cardinals.

"Instant chills," Weaver said.

For better or for worse, emotions always have played a big role in Weaver's career, which has been defined by playoff success and failure.

Now 32, Weaver is merely a spring training non-roster invitee in his second go-round with the Dodgers, trying to make it back to the majors after spending all of last season in the minors.

And after a chance meeting with General Manager Ned Colletti at a Manhattan Beach restaurant, Weaver got a minor league contract and yet another chance.

"I let him know that I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get back to the big leagues in whatever role I can help them compete and win, hopefully continue what they did last year," Weaver said.

To do so, the right-hander will have to impress Manager Joe Torre, whom he still refers to as "Mr. Torre" from their Yankees days together.

In his book "The Yankee Years," Torre is quoted as telling New York general manager Brian Cashman that "You've got to get rid of this guy because emotionally he can't handle it, trying to come back from that."

That refers to Weaver giving up the game-winning home run to Florida's Alex Gonzalez in Game 4 of the 2003 World Series.

Torre said he had no problem with Weaver personally, but the Yankees traded Weaver to the Dodgers along with Yhency Brazoban for Kevin Brown, and Weaver won 27 games over the next two seasons.

"I'm hoping to get him back to where he was," pitching coach Rick Honeycutt said. "I know what he had in the past. He's a great competitor."

After winning a World Series with the Cardinals, Weaver admits to slacking.

"I didn't handle it properly, as far as you go late into October and usually you're home resting by that time," Weaver said. "I really think it was my fault not getting back into the workout routine. I was tired. I was beat.

"I felt like I could just go into spring, get my work in, and everything would be fine and dandy. Obviously, it backfired."

Weaver went 7-13 with Seattle and then pitched in the minors for Milwaukee and Cleveland, swallowing his pride to work as a reliever in the Indians organization.

Weaver wants to pitch another three to five years, and said he pitches with a lower arm angle now while getting his sinker back in form.

"Just to see that, my confidence is high," he said.

He's pitching in a minor-league game today so they can stretch him out to three innings in anticipation of using him as a long man out of the bullpen or possibly giving him a spot start now and then. But he clearly has this team made as a reliever, even though no one has come out and actually said it yet.

``He has been pretty consistent for me, without telling you he is on the club,'' Joe Torre said this morning. ``I think doing what we're doing today (is telling). Normally, you want to see somebody pitch against big-league clubs, but this is more of a physical thing. I would like to see him stretch it out.''

IT BEGINS

Dodgers purchased the contract of RHP Jeff Weaver from Triple-A Albuquerque.

The Dodgers have looked at Weaver strictly as a reliever since signing him, and he'll be used in the middle innings now. He had a 3.55 ERA in 12 2/3 innings down in Triple-A.

mayor jingleberries, Friday, 1 May 2009 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

I was at the game tonight and Taco Time looked pretty good! Based on MacDonald's poor start tonight, I wouldn't be surprised if they take MacDonald out and give Weaver a shot in the rotation.

His at-bat was shockingly exciting. He hit a towering fly to the warning track.

Matt Kemp totally probably single-handedly salvaged Weaver's Doyers callup. Kemp made two leaping CF web gems that probably would have scored a total of 5 RBI.

Guy has wheels.

It was like old times for Weaver, who won 27 games for the Dodgers from 2004-05.

"I finally had a pass list again," said Weaver, the Southern California native who spent all last year and the beginning of this year in the Minor Leagues. "I had a handful of people show up and share it with me. My parents, a couple buddies, my wife and Gary Wright. You know who he is?"

Wright sang the 1976 hit "Dream Weaver," not only on the platinum album but at Weaver's wedding.

"We met when I was pitching in Detroit, we kept in touch and he sang at my wedding," Weaver said. "He came to show support."

"It's a chance to share the same mound on the same day and not many can say that," said Weaver. "It's a moment we won't forget. It's pretty special regardless of the outcome."

Weaver said his parents had planned to attend the wedding of a relative in Temecula, Calif., but those plans have changed.

It's really too bad this isn't a Dodger home game. Jeff could bean Jered; Jered could charge the mound, only to fall down and have Jeff fart in his face or something. "I'm tellin' mom!!!"

Special brand of Weaver magic in SF. Gets out of bases loaded no out jam in the second, follows it up in the 3rd with getting 2 outs then somehow walking Bengie Molina. Gets Schierholz to ground out on next pitch. Such a bro.
