Back down you go! What a good game.

kidnapping and blackmail (dymaxia), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

another great game.

anyone notice that these games have turned entirely on WALKS? all of these two run shots have come on the heels of walks, as did the tribe taking the lead on monday and tying it up in the 9th last night.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm too invested in seeing the ChiSox bounce to separate my frustration w/ the Indians & my appreciation for some good ol' fashioned awesome playoff-stretch-run baseball. But, yeah, sure, I'll buy the "great game" talk. Also, FFS, Hawk, PRETEND YOU'RE A BASEBALL ANNOUNCER.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

omg what just happened?? my fucking cable went out RIGHT as Rowand was approaching the wall. he fucking homered, didn't he? fuck.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 22 September 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the CSN feeds went down - for both Sox and Cubs - last night.

I didn't get mine back until the sixth inning. Some people in the 'burbs didn't get it at all.

It's funny 'cos the game the other night topped the ratings, so I imagine that's a lot of pissed-off people. And that's not counting the games in bars.

kidnapping and blackmail (dymaxia), Thursday, 22 September 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

Oh, them bases on balls.

Christina Kahrl of BP on the worst game announcers:

"Pretty much all of the legacies are terrible, Buck less than Brennaman and Chip Caray (I think Skip's graduated to a different class). But I think in a class all to himself is Hawk Harrelson, the game's worst homer, the man who would rather talk about his successes on the links than pay attention to the game, because he's lazily comfortable in his ump-baiting and unblinking, Goebbels-like boosterism."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 September 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

This shit is why I try not to care too much about sports. It makes my stomach hurt to think about it.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 22 September 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

Okay, people don't like Hawk. Fine. He's easy to laugh at.

But the level of bitchiness - to the point of obsession - is astonishing.

Goebbels-like

Jesus. And it's realllly ironic, too. I can't believe how flagrant
these people are....

kidnapping and blackmail (dymaxia), Thursday, 22 September 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

morb you're like chuck eddy with his vv links

gear (gear), Friday, 23 September 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

clearly that BP guy is a fucking idiot

gear (gear), Friday, 23 September 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

Congratulations on the AL Central title, Cleveland. You deserve it.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 23 September 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

does Cleveland have ANYBODY on their team batting below .300 right now?

Do they have the best AL team batting average? I'm too lazy to check. Anyway, they are impressive. As a baseball fan, sure, I love the team. totally awesome what they are doing right now.

as pessimistic by nature as I am, tho, not ready to concede the central, I'm really not. McCarthy was amazing tonight. Again. Fucking Ozzie. fucking fucking Ozzie. Sticking with that piece o'crap for two games. If it comes down to the Sox losing by one or two games, all we have to do as Sox fans is point the finger directly at our Venezeulan friend for marching his garbage-ass Cuban friend out there when his garbage-ass Cuban friend didn't have SHIT in the tank. It's a disgrace.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 23 September 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

i heard hawk harrelson say he'd take joe crede "over any third baseman in baseball - a-rod, rolen, anybody." and i know i heard this cuz it's quoted on that ihatehawkharrelson.com site.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 23 September 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 23 September 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

man last night's game was the third i've been to in the past month or so and they've lost all. sorry fellow sox fans. i'll stop going.

oops (Oops), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Oops, how's about I pay for you to attend some Angels & Yankees games coming up?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 23 September 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Throw in room/board/hookers and you got yourself a deal.

oops (Oops), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

I mean fuck the one Bulls game I went to last season they totally blew it in the final minute against the HORNETS, who only wone like 5 or so road games the entire year.

oops (Oops), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

Hey, oops - I was there, too! I guess I picked the wrong night.

simian (dymaxia), Saturday, 24 September 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

Cleveland's defense might be its Achilles Heel as we head down the stretch. Royals beat them on a ball lost in the sun by Grady Sizemore, so the Sox catch a break and get their division lead back up to 2-1/2 games. With 4 games left against the Tigers and then 3 head-to-head with the Indians, and their magic # at 5, the Sox could clinch by Thursday night. 3 more wins, and the Sox are guaranteed of no worse than the Wild Card, too.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 26 September 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

So far, the Sox's September has actually been better than its July and August, and it looks to me as if we've made it through the worst...

simian (dymaxia), Monday, 26 September 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

So the Sox lose another 1-run game to the lowly Tigers -- with Geoff Blum grounding into a double-play with bases loaded and 1 out in the 8th inning -- yet they actually take 1 off their respective magic numbers over Cleveland for the division and Bos/NYY for the WC thanks to everyone else losing.

Nice.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

The Indians have now lost 3 in a row. The worm has turned, eh, Smithers?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 29 September 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Funny, innit, how those doormat teams always seem to do a lot of damage.

I had a feeling this would happen.

simian (dymaxia), Thursday, 29 September 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

Of course, if you're a true White Sox fan, you're glad about the division and all....but you're dreading the post-season. I think my ulcers are already acting up just thinking about it.

simian (dymaxia), Thursday, 29 September 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

This year Tampa seems to play the good teams tough and lose like there is no to tomorrow to teams below .500.

BBT and Stormy - what a relief, eh? For a minute there, we thought we might not make it....right now, I'm just happy we have our division crown back....what a long crazy trip it's been since 2000.

simian (dymaxia), Thursday, 29 September 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

HOORAY

oops (Oops), Thursday, 29 September 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

BRING ON THE FUKKIN' ANGELS.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 30 September 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

It was never in doubt my friends!

(ok when Crede bobbled that ball in teh 9th I had brief visions of them not making the playoffs)

I think I'd prefer to play the Yankees 1st round if it could somehow work out that way. But whatevah. let the chips fall where they may.

GO YOU WHITE SOX!!!!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 30 September 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

Conratulations to the White Sox.

what is that jaymc? is that a picture of you thinking sports are antithetical to "artistic pursuits"? dork.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Has there ever been a team with 95+ wins who drew so much doubt on their postseason chances?

If the Indians don't make it, I may root for a Chisox-Padres Series.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Morbius, I dunno. In my opinion, the 2000 Chisox were so much weaker, fundamentally, than the '05 Sox it's not funny. Our pitching has struggled a bit in the second half, but when you compare it to, say, the Red Sox's, I think we have a chance.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Saturday, 1 October 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

I would LOVE to know what Ozzie was thinking in that 13th inning - try a squeeze w/ 1 out instead of going for the fly ball / ground out thing w/ Pod Person, then using Konerko w/ 1st base open. Shots in the dugout after Konerko was walked showed Ozzie saying "I can't believe it" to himself in disgust - I HOPE that was about the failed squeeze play. I'd also question leaving Senor Gload to bat w/ two on in that situation, but given the way Cabrera was pitching that inning (after two GREAT innings of relief), it didn't matter who was up, as they'd probably do damage. The pitch Gload mashed to right-center - flat fastball looking thing catching a good portion of the plate - was a carbon-copy of the pitch that Harris mashed off the right field wall (and Blake might've misplayed) for the triple.

And given the way Cabrera looked against Harris (i.e. shittay) - why in the sweet fancy depths of Hell WAS Pod doing trying to bunt?!?!

three weeks pass...
"I don't know what they could be thinking about with that--obviously the theme, believe in what we're doing, I would imagine. But that's kind of fluffy for me. That's something the chicks would like."
--pitching coach Don Cooper, on the White Sox' unofficial theme song, Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" (Chicago Daily Southtown)

"Now we kind of go into bars when we're as a team and try to get them to play it. We always seem to be able to finagle a way to get them to play it."
--catcher A.J. Pierzynski, on the song

"It started out as a big joke, but you (media) guys have somehow found out about it. Now it's turned into this big media thing, which kind of makes us laugh even more. Now it's even a bigger joke because everyone keeps talking about it, you see reporters on the street trying to get people to sing it. It makes it even better."
--Pierzynski

"That's manly. Journey is manly. Why is Journey not manly? I heard Joe Theismann say on the radio that Journey was his favorite group, and Theismann was pretty manly, wasn't he?"
--Pierzynski, when asked why they didn't choose a song that's more manly (MLB.com)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 24 October 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

From the same batch of quotes, Ken Williams speaks some truth:

"Whoopee. If this were 2006 right now, today, we'd be picked second in our division and you know it. Even if we win [the Series], I'll bet we'd be picked second in our division if we brought back the same people."

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 24 October 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

And I'd be picking them 2nd!

I never heard the Journey news til BP ran those quotes. (I prefer Sandra Bernhard's cover of DSB.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 24 October 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

I liked this one:

"I love this job. There's nothing better than eating and drinking for free in Chicago."
--White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, on the rumor that he'll retire should the White Sox win the World Series (Chicago Sun-Times)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 24 October 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Dude, he's going to get FATTIE FAT. Even moreso than he already is.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 24 October 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Isnt that shitty Laguna Beach show responsible for Journey being played everywhere?

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Monday, 24 October 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

I think Journey's responsible for Journey being played everywhere.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Just stating the facts, ma'am.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking earlier this week about how people would treat them next season and what a furor it would cause. No way would I put money on them making the playoffs next year - I have to assume that the pitching regresses somewhat and they come closer to breaking even on close games. So yeah, definitely second-place.
