"I want to discount all the 'Harper's doing it at 19, Trout is 20!' but I guess maybe that year does make a legit difference when you look at others' performance at 19 vs 20 (like A-Rod)."
Okay maybe you can discount the age thing, but you can't entirely discount the fact that last year Trout was 19 and completely struggling at the MLB level in ~130 plate appearances. A guy coming in at 19 years old and completely dominating in his first contact with MLB pitching is basically once a generation talent+.

Harper has slapped baseball awake, and every time he steps up to the plate, years of crusty baseball routine no longer apply. He swings the bat with a blinding snap of force, and in the outfield dives for balls that bored veterans would let go. When he hits a double he usually tries to stretch it into a triple. Manager Davey Johnson tries to bench him for being hurt, and Harper confronts him and says, like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare like a person with enough dignity to refuse welfare: Let me work.

Bryce Harper took a moment during the all-star festivities to make fun of Kevin Millar’s hair during a segment with MLB.com.
“Especially Millar with those highlights,” Harper joked about Millar’s blonde tips. “That’s terrible. Isn’t he, like, 46?”
Yes, I know Harper is the same guy who rocked a mullet and ended up on a “hair don’t” list. But if you’re 19 and named Bryce Harper, unwritten hair rules don’t apply to you.
Harper also managed to get a shot in at Sean Casey at the end of the interview.
“Sean Casey needs to get on some P90X instead of P45.”
Boom, roasted.

Has a 19-year-old ever scored 100 runs? Harper scored one tonight, so he'd need six more in the Nationals' six remaining games. (Ott, Mantle, and Griffey didn't.)
― clemenza, Friday, 28 September 2012 01:23 (thirteen years ago)
Buddy Lewis had 100 runs for the Senators in 1936, turning 20 in August of that year. Harper may or may not get to 100 runs but he's on pace for 114 runs if he'd played the full season instead of starting in late April.

I vaguely recognize the name...Best thing in the world for Harper this year has been Trout. When Harper was slumping during the summer, all the media focus had shifted to Trout. Between Washington's surprise season and the messy Strasburg situation, I'm sure a spotlight would have normally been squarely on Harper in the middle of all that; as is, his own troubles got barely any attention that I noticed. (Maybe a different story locally.) So he played through that, and now he's having his best month yet.

Soriano has talked to BH since, but...
"It may not have been a catch-able ball, but if we're positioned the right way, there might have been a different outcome. With two outs, I could tell my four-year-old son, 'You know where you need to play,' and he would go to the right spot to make the play. It's not an excuse, and I'm not speaking badly about anybody, but I think that's how you play the game.''
