I'm in one of those Facebook groups for the small town where I grew up. Someone posted this morning, identifying it as 1971 and soliciting names.

https://i.postimg.cc/3wxP8GHQ/baseball.jpg

97% sure that's me just to the coach's right. (Couldn't remember his name, but someone ID'd him as Mr. Morton in the comments.) I'm so proud of those pants--I hadn't even read Ball Four yet, but I was already bucking the system. Typically, I'm trying to sneak a glance at the lineup card, worried about where I'm batting or even if I'm starting.

I think I posted in the portraits thread about how great Walter Iooss is (probably misspelled his name as I can’t find it in search) but was reminded of this by this thread & a SFG photography book I bought recently.

that first one is Dodger Stadium is just sensational. and the Piazza graphic! so 90s.

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 3 February 2024 18:49 (three months ago) link

I think the three trees on the left are these ones

Fun Fact: The three palm trees in the left field bullpen are nicknamed, "The Three Sisters". They're so iconic to the stadium and to the team, the Dodgers actually incorporated them as part of their sock design. 🌴🌴🌴 pic.twitter.com/SjFysBE83g

I often assume everyone's on my wavelength. In my local Facebook group yesterday, someone linked to a big table of census-derived data for our town. In the comments I said "You know, a census taker once tried to test me...the rest of the story isn't important." The poster responded "Funny, but not"--I couldn't tell if she got the reference or not.

Weirdest photo that turned up on my FB wall this morning: the two Joneses, 1996:

https://i.postimg.cc/N0G3Nxg3/jones.jpg

Someone else commented on the thing that jumped out at me right away: looks like a photo from the '50s (the other person thought the '20s--the colour rules that out for me). And was Chipper Jones always that stocky? He looks like Harmon Killebrew there.

Maybe the M for Milwaukee on the hat is adding to the effect?

felicity, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 05:00 (six days ago) link

I miss a lot--see discussion of Shohei Ohtani New Yorker cover--so I didn't notice that...You might be right, though, that the M (almost subliminally) has something to do with it. It's their bulldog-like builds, which I associate with the '50s, that seemed off to me.

clemenza, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 14:29 (six days ago) link

pretty sure that M is for macon, erstwhile atlanta class a affiliate

mookieproof, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 17:55 (six days ago) link

that photo is clearly (to me) show on medium format film too, which adds to the effect. old tymey portraits would have been shot on large format film. neither look like 35mm

, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 18:09 (six days ago) link

Oh would wearing the M for Macon have been a thing they would have done? Agree they look unusually built, perhaps it's the photo angle slightly from below. Timeless photo from the ankles up.

felicity, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 18:12 (six days ago) link

I'm sure all of that figures in, but this is how I remember Chipper Jones:

https://i.postimg.cc/W3vg3LJJ/chipper.jpg

Did he lose weight as he got older? Bulking up seemed to be the usual thing during the PED era.

the macon braves are no more, having moved to rome, georgia in 2003 . . . where some desperate writers refer to them as the R-Braves.

the M-Braves still exist tho, as a double-a team in pearl (just outside of jackson) mississippi. naturally they had to add a fucking tomahawk to their M

huh. thanks!

columbus, ga has had a bunch of teams over the last 150 years; the last one left for bowling green, ky in 2009

i assume they've built a new stadium and will be naming themselves the FORT BENNING MURDERERS or something?
