Woody Paige, succinct as always on Around teh Horn: "You've got to gut this team like a fish. And when you do that, you've got to get rid of Delgado, you gotta get rid of Beltran, you gotta get rid of Sean Green, you gotta get rid of El Duque, you gotta get rid of Glavine, you gotta get rid of, uh, ah, Pedro Martinez, you've got to build around... Perez... Maine... Wright... Reyes."
― Andy K, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)
Get rid of Beltran? That's dumb.
― Alex in SF, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)
so was that glavine's last outing?
― mookieproof, Monday, 1 October 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)
yeah i saw that, and apparently some people on wfan are talking about dumping beltran too. so dumb.

In a way I think the Mets collapse is worse than that of the 1995 Angels, just because of the fewer number of games involved (i.e. the swiftness of events) and the fact that they never really recovered at any point (the 1995 Angels, 1993 Giants, 1978 Red Sox all collapsed, and then caught fire at the end to tie up the division again).

i more intrigued about his name than anything else.

I think the significance of the Mets collapse is also coupled with the fact that they had one of the weakest schedules in the league, playing much of that stretch at home.

att Steve Shasta (from Newsday):
John Maine showed up Monday, but not to pack his locker. He came by Shea to pick up MRI film of his left hip, which he will have examined further Tuesday in Philadelphia. Maine revealed that he had been hurting from a sore hip since the All-Star break, which may explain why he went 5-6 with a 5.53 ERA in 15 starts in the second half of the season.
"It bothered me all year," Maine said.
He seemed fine on Saturday, when Maine struck out 14 and carried a no-hit bid into the eighth inning before Paul Hoover's two-out dribbler ruined his shot at history. Maine's gem kept the Mets' playoff hopes alive, only to see then dashed 24 hours later.
"It still doesn't feel like the season is over," Maine said.
Told about the fans' misery, he added, "I don't think they're as disappointed as we are. We worked harder than they did to not do it."

what? against Manager of the Year Manny Acta?
via the Always Amazin' blog -- the year in Mets "#5 Starters":
Jorge Sosa (14 starts): 7-6, 4.59 ERA Mike Pelfrey (13 starts): 3-8, 5.58 ERA Brian Lawrence (6 starts): 1-2, 6.83 ERA Jason Vargas (2 starts): 0-1, 12.19 ERA Dave Williams (1 start): 0-1, 22.85 ERA Chan Ho Park (1 start): 0-1, 15.75 ERA Phil Humber (1 start): 0-0, 7.71 ERA
Total: 38 starts, 201 1/3 IP, 11-19, 6.39 ERA
Makes you wonder why Sosa was pulled from the spot.

What if Maine had spoken up about his injury, gone on the 15-day DL and turned in just one more quality start than he did? The world may never know!

nah, that's not a gamer.

Buster Olney floated the idea of a Reyes/Gomez for Santana trade, which seems like a terrible idea to me.
― polyphonic, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)
they're not dealing Reyes, Wright or Beltran for anybody.
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)
and I choose to blame the idiot Kevin James LETSGOMETS!!! Shea video for the collapse. It was introduced sometime around August 1.
