Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 March 2007 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

Looks like the starting five will be Glavine, Duque, Maine, Perez, and Pelfrey. I'm ok with that.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 26 March 2007 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

sanchez is out for the season.

maura, Monday, 26 March 2007 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

That taxi was cursed.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 26 March 2007 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

ok, really, he's just out until august-ish. why do i have low hopes for his recovery?

maura, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

because he's DUANER

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

Somehow I missed these transactions last week:

Released DH-B Ruben Sierra. [3/20]
Signed 4C-R Fernando Tatis to a minor league contract. [3/23]

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

Steven Goldman on Wright batting second

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Does it really make sense to bat Albert Pujols first? Isn't that wasting a lot of his power by ensuring he gets pitched around A LOT to start the game.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

Mind you I'm not saying give Tony Womack the most ABs on your team, I'm just saying isn't their value to batting your best hitter in a position where 1) he's likely to have men on to start the game--unless one of those men is Tony Womack--and 2) have your 2nd best slugger behind him.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

Not sure why Wright bats 2nd instead of Beltran anyway.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Goldman's not arguing Pujols should've batted leadoff; just that Womack should've been below him. (SG's writings on Womack during his terrible year with the Yankees were hilarious.)

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

Man I can't believe the season is finally starting this weekend! It's felt like ages.

Michael F Gill, Saturday, 31 March 2007 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

Eckstein is MEAT!!! A cutlet so tiny, but meat nonetheless!!!

LET'S GO! Less than 24 hrs...

Andy K, Sunday, 1 April 2007 02:01 (nineteen years ago)

How sweed it is.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 2 April 2007 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

that was a really fun game to watch.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 2 April 2007 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

Randolph chokes and puts Lo Duca back at 2-hole, so of course he knocks in 3.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 2 April 2007 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

RED-ASS CLUTCH

(I totally forgot about last night's game; I should be fired from life.)

David R., Monday, 2 April 2007 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

Braden Looper is starting for the Cards tomorrow. Hmm.

During the commercial breaks so far, MLB TV is running a baseball simulation of "Pong" complete with loud tapping noises.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 01:28 (nineteen years ago)

The Pong is riveting, I have to admit.

mattbot, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 02:27 (nineteen years ago)

El Duque doubles his MLB career RBI total with one swing!

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

Pong is better then the Tom Petty commercial they ran every half inning last year.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

I do appreciate the addition of the radio feed in the MLB TV subscription though. Now, with two browsers, I can at least listen to Mets radio while muting the TV broadcast. I don't have to listen to Joe Buck.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 5 April 2007 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

I like John Maine.

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 5 April 2007 01:05 (nineteen years ago)

:-(

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 5 April 2007 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

:-D

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 5 April 2007 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

ah, looper

maura, Thursday, 5 April 2007 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

this is great!

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 5 April 2007 02:17 (nineteen years ago)

I might knock the Cards down a few wins now -- 79?

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 5 April 2007 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

jeez, 4 games is nothing, but juggernaut in effect

gershy, Saturday, 7 April 2007 02:09 (nineteen years ago)

so uh

the mets are pretty good, huh

:(

cankles, Saturday, 7 April 2007 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

well, I am curbing my enthus... they won the first 4 in '85 and finished second. STILL...

Dr Morbius, Saturday, 7 April 2007 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

Hey John Maine,

You seem to like to load the bases with no outs. Do you get a major rush out of it? You know, I saw Rod Beck do it once: he walked the first the batters then struck out the side. I'm not sure if that's the most efficient thing to do, maybe you could mix in some strikes sometimes.

Signed,
Steve Shasta

Steve Shasta, Monday, 9 April 2007 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

^^^^the first three batters^^^^

Steve Shasta, Monday, 9 April 2007 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

ValenTEEEEEEEN

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 April 2007 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

Futley!

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 April 2007 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

Maine's 3rd straight inning of walking the bases loaded, at least there's 2 outs this time.

Steve Shasta, Monday, 9 April 2007 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

AMBIDEXTEROUS BURGERS

David R., Monday, 9 April 2007 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

the one time they should've walked to load the bases (Howard with a man on 2nd & 3rd, 2 away)...

francisF, Monday, 9 April 2007 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

Pat Burrell is the new A-Rod.

David R., Monday, 9 April 2007 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

he is as loved in philly as a-fraud is in new yawk!

j.q higgins, Monday, 9 April 2007 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

I think Ambiorix is the new Jorge Julio.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 April 2007 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

I think they left him in too long.

I'd give him a 1 inning, 20 pitch limit.

Steve Shasta, Monday, 9 April 2007 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

David Wright is the new A-Rod.

David R., Monday, 9 April 2007 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

And you are the new Grindhouse Boy!

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 April 2007 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

David R., Monday, 9 April 2007 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

David R., Monday, 9 April 2007 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

but Cap'n Red-Ass will DP & get the Phils out of the inning.

David R., Monday, 9 April 2007 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

Geary was awful, why did they keep him in for so long?

Michael F Gill, Monday, 9 April 2007 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

It was the Post:

"We've been throwing four innings a night, for months! Our pitching coach has no experience talking to a bullpen. He can help you mechanically, but he can't tell you emotions. He has no idea what it feels like. And neither does Willie. They're not a lot of help, put it that way."
--Mets closer Billy Wagner, in comments reprinted in the New York Post.

"I don't want people to misinterpret what I was saying. I wasn't trying to knock Willie or Rick, because they've been great. As bad as we've played, they've been the most supportive coaches I've probably been around."
--Wagner, clarifying his comments.

"This is not the time for this kind of article to come out. We believe in Willie. We believe in Rick. And we wouldn't be where we're at today if it wasn't for their leadership, and constantly patting us on the back and kicking us in the butt."
--Wagner

"It's never about me. I want that clarified--it's not about me. It's the results that we're dealing with. I definitely don't want to sound like I'm trying to be a loud mouth, or a leader of this team. Because I'm not the leader of this team."
--Wagner (Anthony DiComo, MLB.com)

Dr Morbius, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

hey tad thanks for the peace offering. for the record i'm not displacing anyone in philly or the east coast in general, i'll leave it to, i dunno, lawyers or somebody to do that. (JOEKS)

most of my friends who are phillies fans have been extremely gracious with their victory, which is nice considering i sorta wanted to drive off the road while listening to the mets yesterday.

hstencil, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

AP - Billy Wagner injured his ankle Sunday while furiously backtracking from comments he made earlier about the effectiveness of the Mets coaching staff.

Leee, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

I'm really surprised no one jumped outta the upper deck when Glavine hit Willis with the 1-2 pitch.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

while yanquis fans are bombastic and smug in their entitlement, mets fans are from other lands and retarded. i remember this summer a little kid (like, 4 or 5) getting gently berated by his uncle or somesuch relative for wearing a yanquis hat. dude. the kid is fucking 5.

Woody Paige, succinct as always on Around teh Horn: "You've got to gut this team like a fish. And when you do that, you've got to get rid of Delgado, you gotta get rid of Beltran, you gotta get rid of Sean Green, you gotta get rid of El Duque, you gotta get rid of Glavine, you gotta get rid of, uh, ah, Pedro Martinez, you've got to build around... Perez... Maine... Wright... Reyes."

Andy K, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

Get rid of Beltran? That's dumb.

Alex in SF, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

so was that glavine's last outing?

mookieproof, Monday, 1 October 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i saw that, and apparently some people on wfan are talking about dumping beltran too. so dumb.

hstencil, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 02:34 (eighteen years ago)

In a way I think the Mets collapse is worse than that of the 1995 Angels, just because of the fewer number of games involved (i.e. the swiftness of events) and the fact that they never really recovered at any point (the 1995 Angels, 1993 Giants, 1978 Red Sox all collapsed, and then caught fire at the end to tie up the division again).

-- signed: guy who still hasn't recovered from the 1987 Blue Jays

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 08:47 (eighteen years ago)

i more intrigued about his name than anything else.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

I think the significance of the Mets collapse is also coupled with the fact that they had one of the weakest schedules in the league, playing much of that stretch at home.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

att Steve Shasta (from Newsday):

John Maine showed up Monday, but not to pack his locker. He came by Shea to pick up MRI film of his left hip, which he will have examined further Tuesday in Philadelphia. Maine revealed that he had been hurting from a sore hip since the All-Star break, which may explain why he went 5-6 with a 5.53 ERA in 15 starts in the second half of the season.

"It bothered me all year," Maine said.

He seemed fine on Saturday, when Maine struck out 14 and carried a no-hit bid into the eighth inning before Paul Hoover's two-out dribbler ruined his shot at history. Maine's gem kept the Mets' playoff hopes alive, only to see then dashed 24 hours later.

"It still doesn't feel like the season is over," Maine said.

Told about the fans' misery, he added, "I don't think they're as disappointed as we are. We worked harder than they did to not do it."

TRUTH

sanskrit, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

what? against Manager of the Year Manny Acta?

via the Always Amazin' blog -- the year in Mets "#5 Starters":

Jorge Sosa (14 starts): 7-6, 4.59 ERA
Mike Pelfrey (13 starts): 3-8, 5.58 ERA
Brian Lawrence (6 starts): 1-2, 6.83 ERA
Jason Vargas (2 starts): 0-1, 12.19 ERA
Dave Williams (1 start): 0-1, 22.85 ERA
Chan Ho Park (1 start): 0-1, 15.75 ERA
Phil Humber (1 start): 0-0, 7.71 ERA

Total: 38 starts, 201 1/3 IP, 11-19, 6.39 ERA

Makes you wonder why Sosa was pulled from the spot.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

What if Maine had spoken up about his injury, gone on the 15-day DL and turned in just one more quality start than he did? The world may never know!

mattbot, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

nah, that's not a gamer.

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

Buster Olney floated the idea of a Reyes/Gomez for Santana trade, which seems like a terrible idea to me.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

they're not dealing Reyes, Wright or Beltran for anybody.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

and I choose to blame the idiot Kevin James LETSGOMETS!!! Shea video for the collapse. It was introduced sometime around August 1.
