did anyone else catch the part where he was talking about Carlton Fisk and the famous game 6 home run. then describes a yankee Francisco Cervelli RBI as "and Carlton Fisk is very proud of this young man Cervelli, and his maturation as a catcher."

why would he be proud with no involvement in the organization? and why did Fisk drive all the way home to New Hampshire after the game 6 shot? did his dad die or something?

sanskrit, Saturday, 8 May 2010 23:09 (sixteen years ago)

cervelli is making everyone proud

ive heard that story abt fisk but i cant recall the details

Joe Suck: The fans have done a great job voting Jason Heyward into the All-Star OF.

No and you suck.

And fuck your NBA analogies.

Joe: Does Strasburg deserve to be in the All-Star game, with only 4 starts under his belt?
Tim: Strasburg has three starts left before the All-Start game. I'll tell you what, Joe. If he wins all three of those games, then he deserves to be in. And if he doesn't win all three of those games, but his ERA is still around the 2.00 mark, then he probably deserves to be in.

Tim (about 20 seconds later): This may be an overstatement, but I'm gonna say it anyway: if Stephen Strasburg isn't in the All-Star game, it will be an INJUSTICE to America, to America and baseball.

whaa?

Kevin Millar almost makes me long for McCarver

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 10 July 2010 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

100x worse: Joe Simpson has this series off, so the Braves team is Chip Caray + Ron Gant. Gant is so nervous, he can't keep himself from just jabbering nonstop. And Caray is awful as usual.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Saturday, 10 July 2010 21:16 (fifteen years ago)

OK, Millar's Marv Albert impression is worse.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Saturday, 10 July 2010 23:07 (fifteen years ago)

Tim McCarver backtracked Monday from the comparison he made Saturday between the Yankees’ treatment of Joe Torre’s legacy as manager to the way World War II despots, “primarily in Russia and Germany,” airbrushed former generals out of photographs “after they had shot ’em.”

This guy doing the Braves-Giants game with Karros has such a strong lisp! It's weird that that's not an impediment to broadcasting if you have good timbre and can jabber on without saying "uh".

Must be Josh Lewin, who's far more tolerable than most of the others. Not sure why he's not doing the Rangers games anymore.

Andy K, Saturday, 23 April 2011 20:35 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, it's Lewin. He's ok (by Fox standards).

HOMER

Uh, hi, Mr. Meyers. I've been doing some thinking, and I've got some ideas to improve the show. I got it right here. (pulls out a piece of paper) One, Poochie needs to be louder, angrier, and have access to a time machine. Two, whenever Poochie's not onscreen, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Poochie"? Three--

i'm actually liking the Joe Buck game tonight (though i know in the past he has been intolerable).

Tim McCarver is the bigger problem with the Fox broadcast.

Posnanski on the decline of McCarver (and he's absolutely right about the Mets days):

I loved McCarver. Absolutely loved the guy. Every at-bat, it seemed, he taught me baseball. It was that way for a long time. I honestly believe that McCarver was one of the great pioneers in baseball commentary, the John Madden of his sport in many ways. He was the first I knew who could really break down what the pitcher was trying to do, why he was trying to do it, how the hitter was trying to counter it, and so on. He broke down the game in a way I can never remember any other color commentator doing it. And he was a good story teller too. If I'm listing the greatest color commentators in baseball history, he's right up at the top.

Trouble is, McCarver has been doing this a long time. And one of the sad truths is that sports color commentary tends to have an expiration date...
