Nice overview of the burgeoning Venezuela/Dominican rivalry (luckily, and perhaps unsurprisingly, they play against each other in the first game of pool D). I really wish I could get ESPN Deportes; something tells me that watching all these early rounds on tape-delay is gonna get old fast.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Senator Leiter makes the USA pitching staff after Wagner and Sabathia pull out. So, Venezuela's a lock?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 March 2006 14:43 (twenty years ago)

I can't say I'm surprised that last night's games weren't really worth staying up all night for.

adam (adam), Friday, 3 March 2006 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Ugh, hearing Jeff Brantley in 'midseason form' on March 3 is a bummer.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 4 March 2006 18:24 (twenty years ago)

No, no, 20 minutes about the bullet train and how polite Japanese people are is really interesting.

adam (adam), Saturday, 4 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

TAIWAN IS THE REAL CHINA!!

The photo of the Cuban baseball team in today's NYT is just astonishing. It comes after the jump. They're all looking right at you with the same kinds of faces you see in very old photographs, when no one felt any obligation to smile and fancy cameras were curious devices. It is incredible. The looks on their faces is just so relaxed and intelligent and rough.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

It's hard to get the impact on the web, with this small size, but here is the photo:

Jimmy Mod: The Prettiest Flower In The Pond (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:17 (twenty years ago)

That photo is incredible. They look so badass. Either that, or they're about to break into a dance routine a la "Beat It".

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

I would love to see Cuban Team destroy at teh WBC

Jimmy Mod: The Prettiest Flower In The Pond (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Tracer who's the photographer?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, that pic is by "Jose Goitia for the New York Times"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 March 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

It really is worth it to buy the paper today to see that pic nice and big. They did a great job with the color, too.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 March 2006 21:21 (twenty years ago)

He's a cuban photographer working with the AP so I don't think it's gonna be available anywhere else.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 6 March 2006 23:24 (twenty years ago)

Awesome photo. I stayed up late to watch Japan's first three games, being the night owl that I am. I'd like to see them and Cuba both throw down, what with everyone picking USA/DR/Venezuela.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 00:25 (twenty years ago)

be that as it may, i'm pretty fired up venezuela v. dr today.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Australia vs. Italy @ 8pm EST!!!

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm taping some of US-Mexico just in case A-Rod tears an Achilles.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:51 (twenty years ago)

IT BEGINS

Jimmy Mod: The Prettiest Flower In The Pond (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:15 (twenty years ago)

David Ortiz (L) just launched a MONSTER home-run off of Johan Santana (L)... dudes.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Gameday is up if you go to http://www.worldbaseballclassic.com

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:10 (twenty years ago)

And log-in information from last season is working.

ample parking (Garrett Martin), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:17 (twenty years ago)

elaborate please!

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:17 (twenty years ago)

The pitch Ortiz hit was inside and a little high, too; it's pretty amazing that he was able to get all of it. He's gotten so good at hitting lefties in the last couple of years.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

DR is trashing Venezuela so far.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Not really, it would be 5-3 if Edgardo Alfonso didn't pull a Steve Sax (granted he's back at playing 2B).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Hahahaha!

Bottom 7TH B:0 S:0 O:2
Pitcher Change: Julian Tavarez replaces Damaso Marte.

Bottom 7TH B:1 S:1 O:2
Miguel Cabrera doubles (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Willy Taveras. Omar Vizquel scores.

Bottom 7TH B:0 S:0 O:2
Ramon Hernandez hit by pitch.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Fenway's gonna be rockin' this year!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Haha it was 6-1 top of the fifth when I posted that! I wish I was watching this game!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:05 (twenty years ago)

8-5 now, thanks to Ortiz. Looking at Carlos Hernandez' reaction on the replay, it's nice to see that the Derek Lowe Face is truly the international language.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:08 (twenty years ago)

ORTIZ HITS 2 RUN HOMER #2! ZOINKS!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to have to agree with you dan, in that Ortiz is seeing lefties pretty well.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:10 (twenty years ago)

REGGAETRON: A NEW LEVEL

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:15 (twenty years ago)

This game is over!

Mexico vs. USA just started:
Peavy cruised through the first on 7 pitches.
Rodrigo Lopez is pitching for Mexico, if he's only pitching 3 innings, he should be solid.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Jeter sure is playing some intangible defense today.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Save some of that sass for the blogosphere, DC!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

KARIM GARCIA SIGHTING! WHO IS KARIM GARCIA?

Jimmy Mod: The Prettiest Flower In The Pond (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:51 (twenty years ago)

If he ain't pissing in a pizza joint parking lot, I don't care.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:57 (twenty years ago)

btw...adrian beltre also played like a man possessed for the dr. two homers, as well, right?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:39 (twenty years ago)

I am glad to see Beltre doing well. Hoping he puts a nice season together for my M's!

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:10 (twenty years ago)

Too bad that Dominican v. Venezuela game isn't going to be shown until like 2:30 in the morning, I'd kind of like to watch a bit of it. From the article at Yahoo MLB, it sounds like the crowd really got into the game.

He hit a HR today, but Chipper Jones is really looking old in his face.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:31 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard of Stubby Clapp, but that is one hell of a name.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:33 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was impressed at the crowd enthusiasm in the DR vs Venezuela game, Earl. Give this event a few years and some tweaks, and I think it could be great.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:38 (twenty years ago)

Stubby inherited his nickname from his granddad, who invaded Italy back in '43 or some such shit.

I like to get to know my fantasy players, even the ones picked up solely based on the humorous name factor.

ample parking (Garrett Martin), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 03:46 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't the USA jersey logo look like it was designed for the cable network?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:10 (twenty years ago)

SUCH an awful logo, just piss-poor.

I saw the SA pitcher fool Kanadian Korey Koskie real real bad on a couple pitches last night and started to despair for the Brewers' season this year. Then, this morning, I saw that he hit a two-run homer later in the game. So yay, I guess. Still, though.
