let's do a podcast. half an hour each week knocking a hot button issue back and forth, taking thought by the ear and leading it. just spitballing but some ideas for topics: airline food, black/white ppl:differences, men/women:differences, ppl looking at their phones all the time, apple watch, ariana grande

podcast idea: some ppl reading and reacting to their twitter feeds real time

actually, if that is not the basis of many podcasts already i would be surprised

a pod of ppl just reading tweets wld be pretty good

i dislike the writer evgeny morozov. his opinions and writing all have this soggy hemming and hawing quality, and are never cool or controversial enough, kinda just sappy cliches about the internet. also imo if you're gonna be a pessimist go full dour & apocalyptic, his negativity is just so half-assed and unconvincing. like these are opinions expressed in that interview

haha i just read another interview from a few years ago on gawker and look at this

"the Internet"—I find this concept so sickening and suffocating that I use it in scare quotes throughout the book

from the same interview. apparently we already have the technology of the movie minority report available to us but wait a second wouldn't eliminating crime actually be a bad thing because the fact that crimes are allowed to happen (wtf???) lets us have discussions(???)

We have the means to predict crime—with "big data" and smart algorithms—and prevent it from happening, ergo eliminating crime is a problem worth solving.

But is eliminating crime really a project worth pursuing? Don't we need to be able to break laws in order to revise them? Once crimes are committed, cases reach the courts, generate debate in the media, and so forth—the very fact that crimes are allowed to happen allows us to revise the norms in question. So the inefficiency of the system—the fact that the crime rate is not zero—-is what saves us from the tyranny of conservatism and complacency that might be the outcome if we delegate crime prevention to algorithms and databases.
