yeah it does just happen, forcing it results in creepiness basically -- but i feel that if he's already starting his day off on this note, it'll exponentially increase the chances that he'll wanna end his day on that note too, and then everyone will be encouraged by this.

on new year's day i travelled to the USA to wish it luck for 2009 and also to attend the winter meeting of the american astronomical society in long beach, california.

i had two nights in echo park house-sitting and feeding a cat. i never saw this cat though, and i am beginning to doubt it exists. also in echo park i walked up and down sunset blvd. trying to buy shoes like a homeless person.

seemed like there wasn't much going on in long beach aside from the conference. i gave my talk, i had my interviews, i manned up and did some networking and saw people i had avoided for a couple of years. economy is kicking astronomy's ass, but maybe i have a job now. might have to spin the phd out for another 3-6 months, but seems like i go to new york in one year, touch wood.

then i went to santa barbara. this is where i kept being involved in deaths: santa barbara, ca. santa barbara is like an american bruges. while i was there i saw the wrestly, benjamin buttons and milk. all of them were lame.

then i went to caltech in pasadena. this was boring but the weather was awesome and my motel had a pool, so now i have a tan. finally i went to rite aid and bought the biggest bottle of nyquil they sell, and then i went home.

virgin atlantic gave me no jokes and i continue to recommend them heartily. on the flight there i saw step brothers and young@heart. these were probably the two best movies i have seen so far in 2009. on the way back i saw appaloosa, which is pretty much the worst film i have seen since 9/11.

to sum up: los angeles is both awesome and terrible and the truth is probably somewhere in between. lessons learned: none. i will say this: i at a great many fish and shrimp tacos in southern california.

excellent guest post thank you and yr take on la is def irl relatable and basically indisputable. i just now returned from a room containing no less than 15 users of this chat site. hope u end up here we will kick it.
