Why is there so much Jeremy Blake talk right now?

stop staring at my daughter (slight return) (admrl), Thursday, 12 August 2010 21:36 (eight years ago) Permalink

? me and sarahel always talk about him because we love him ? other than that i guess there's that gus van sant/bret easton ellis project

plax (ico), Thursday, 12 August 2010 21:39 (eight years ago) Permalink

I saw his show at SFMOMA (and liked it) and know some people that knew him. He went to my school. I didn't know/had forgotten about the movie. Makes me sort of hate Gus Van Sant (I already hate Ellis).

I had never heard of jeremy blake until just now, I am super-ignorant about this stuff

I know it's sort of morbid, but I do not think he would be spoken about in quite the same way if he were alive. His work is definitely beautiful but I have this suspicion that it is sort of straining to be conceptual too.

well just reporting from the standpoint of somebody who clicked on the link above & watched it & didn't know until your post that he was dead, the piece was breathtaking

yeah ur probably right wrt the attn. i mean the sc1ent0logy stuff and the suicides are obv *interesting stories* in and of themselves. but his stuff is just so moving and sad elusive anyway.

Maybe y'all have seen these but I like that they are on Ubu

xp-definitely! I just saw him come up a few times on ILX and had a couple of people talking to me about him last week, so wondered why all of a sudden

plax (ico), Thursday, 12 August 2010 21:55 (eight years ago) Permalink

I really don't know many canons. why don't we just say this is for cool stuff we like and post and who cares if other people are tired of it or not?

weird how it feels like it speeds up as you become acclimatised to the pace

plax (ico), Thursday, 12 August 2010 22:02 (eight years ago) Permalink

It was shot at 1/2 speed or something, and practiced several times before the shoot. I haven't watched online so I have no idea how much you can hear, but in a theater the sound design is particularly amazing (and VERY much designed, although in a good way)

stop staring at my daughter (slight return) (admrl), Thursday, 12 August 2010 22:04 (eight years ago) Permalink

i think it must be /10 speed bc they say its six minutes and the video is over an hour

plax (ico), Thursday, 12 August 2010 22:04 (eight years ago) Permalink

ok! I knew it was slow!

^awesome short film. I actually prefer Secondary Currents of his, but I doubt it'd work so well on a small computer screen.

Critical Theory. Please don't kill me.

emil.y, Thursday, 12 August 2010 22:11 (eight years ago) Permalink

Why would I do that? That's great

stop staring at my daughter (slight return) (admrl), Thursday, 12 August 2010 22:12 (eight years ago) Permalink

lol thats what i kinda wanna do mine in, well art theory but yeah

plax (ico), Thursday, 12 August 2010 22:13 (eight years ago) Permalink

Haha, I just get scared of the anti-crit 'proper philosophers' that sometimes pop up on ilx. Although half of my undergrad was 'proper philosophy' anyway, so theoretically I shouldn't be so scared.

Art theory sounds cool - I found it a bit odd doing a dissertation on an artist as it's not really my field, but Porter's so intermedial that it comes as part of a much wider package.
