dusan makavejev's sweet movie

has anyone seen this? i was totally dumbstruck by it on first viewing and i just watched it a second time and came to the conclusion that it's actually totally brilliant. probably one of the most extreme anti-capitalist screeds i've ever witnessed, and also one of the most hilarious - the opening "virginity pageant" scene alone makes it worth at least one watch, not to mention the brilliantly terrible music ("is there liiiife on the earth? is there liiiife after birth?")

also, jack nicholson apparently called it "one of the most beautiful films on sexual politics i've ever seen" or something along those lines. um, just so you know.

conversely, a number of people have also stated that it's one of the most disturbing movies ever made, and that position is totally credible, too, what with its gold-painted penii and crazy socialist woman seducing little boys with candy and...uh, a striptease. have i stoked enough interest in this movie yet?

yes.

well, in THAT case, let me also point out that this movie stars anna prucnal (elena from fellini's city of women), sami frey (franz, band of outsiders), pierre clementi (francesco paolo from the leopard), carole laure, and features a cameo by otto muehl of vienna aktionist fame as a member of a debauched commune of sexually perverted crazies. (that sounds like a really awful screenplay pitch, but, well, there you go)

and furthermore, i shall also point out that it is available on region 0 dvd from brazil here.

This piece is good although I don't get the feeling his career disintegrated the way a country did. Many filmmakers struggle to get projects off the ground after a certain age, surely?
