Just saw it last night, and I'm still trying to process my reaction. I'm tempted to say it's the best remake of Hamlet I've ever seen. Hard to believe it was released 50 years ago, though in some ways it's very much the traditional Technicolor Musical -- I'm assuming it bombed at the time?

bump.

It's a Dr. Seuss musical, you know. All singing, all dancing. All flabberty flancing.

But with a major Oedipal complex. And an atomic explosion at the end.

I think it did bomb. It kind of makes me think of Powell & Pressburger, which is a good thing. I was pleased that when I finally saw it, it had a little substance to it, as I had always worried that it was just going to be a culty piece of kitsch.

saw this in a cinema last year, absolutely loved it even though it was v. twee in places. the musical number in the middle is sheer genius, a dr. suess book come to life.
