Just acquired a bunch of cheap DVDs en masse via a Hong Kong distributor:

The Big Heat - Johnnie To directed this one, it's from 1988, starring Waise Lee as a police officer with some on-the-job psychological issues. This is fairly notorious for being incredibly violent (though not quite violent enough to earn a Category 3 rating). A whole lot of fun, and with a wonderfully inappropriate "wacky" coda considering the events of the film up to that point.

God of Cookery - Absolute brilliance. Stephen Chiao as the titular character, a master TV chef who falls from grace and has to work his way back up to the top, defeating an evil ex-protege, assisted by a group of psychotic Shaolin monks and a hideous Karen Mok.

Too Many Ways To Be Number One - Lau Ching Wan, a terrific actor with a Benicio del Toro-esque presence, plays a low-level gangster trying to move up through the ranks. This is a film along the lines of Run Lola Run in some ways, as it presents two different ways LCW can work his way up the ladder. Seriously astonishing, like Wong Kar-Wai meets Johnnie To (To produced this one, actually). Nice supporting work from Francis Ng as LCW's cowardly, all-talk buddy.

Beast Cops - You'd think this was some sort of manic action film from the DVD box, but this is actually a light-hearted cop buddy movie first, domestic comedy second, and dark triad thriller third. Totally weird in tone and massively entertaining. Anthony Wong gives a fantastic performance that won best actor for him that year in the Hong Kong film awards.

It's the one Tarantino ripped off for Reservoir Dogs, right? I've seen it, it's quite crazy.

Phil no, that’s _ a better tomorrow _
Fred, yes but it’s more discreet than one would expect. I’m a third of the way through and struggling to see the parallels so far
