sorry for the delay, man alive! it isn't practical for us to roll these out on a fixed timetable, but here are a few more to tide you over until the next installment.

hey now #7 has to be CAD

I do like how I gradually felt more like these kitchen islands were on boats just before the kitchen islands themselves became boats

idk about the other ones but #8 is on a houseboat. I imagine the owner/captain feeling a twinge of disappointment whenever one of his dinner parties draws to a close without anyone making an Inception gag.

#5 confuses me because I'm pretty sure it's in an office, not any kind of kitchen.

Digging the boat ones, but let's face it, these are no sunken living rooms.

emil.y, Friday, 22 April 2016 22:08 (two years ago) Permalink

Oh god, now I've started GISing "conceptual kitchen islands". What have you done to me?

I don't think this actually has any island part, but I quite like its confusing geometry:

Is there an island somewhere called kitchen? Or is the closest to it going to be named after Lord Kitchener the Your Country Needs You guy?

Stevolende, Saturday, 23 April 2016 08:17 (two years ago) Permalink

this is already my favorite kitchen island thread. on ilx at least

re island #1 feel like it was a huge mistake to use granite w brown veins it just looks dirty or damaged

a 'special spirit' kitchen island

map, Monday, 25 April 2016 19:08 (two years ago) Permalink

I wonder, did the buyer pay a premium for the granite due to its one-of-a-kind venation, or did they get a discount because it was deemed unattractive? I feel like it looks better in person than in the photo, which is a common problem with avant-garde kitchen islands.

loving that natural edge counter top! looks v tight against the stove and fridge etc tho, they prob just pushed it in to fit in the photo

some of these kitchen islands really are mindblowing

i'm over here picking up the pieces, it's incredible

Karl Malone, Monday, 25 April 2016 20:09 (two years ago) Permalink

jmm's island (10.c, unofficially) is mindblowing because it's so far away from the mainland. you almost have to stop for the night and make camp on the way to the island

Karl Malone, Monday, 25 April 2016 20:11 (two years ago) Permalink

if people find the pace of this thread overwhelming/exhausting, I can slow it down to, say, one island per week for the next 20 years — though I can't guarantee that kitchen islands won't have become obsolete (or somehow co-opted by the singularity) by 2036.

small doug yule carnival club (unregistered), Monday, 25 April 2016 20:37 (two years ago) Permalink

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 18 July 2016 16:36 (two years ago) Permalink

I feel like a lot of these are in an uncanny valley of interior design, where they're so close to being really nice that they're ugly.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Monday, 18 July 2016 19:14 (two years ago) Permalink

Some are just nice though. I can't really find fault with 19, 21 and 22 for example.

it would be neat if someone made a kitchen island out of antique cigar boxes and filled the shelves with French rolling pins so it looked like they were giant cigars

also feel like its ill conceived theres very little counter space in that whole kitchen

lag∞n, Sunday, 9 October 2016 15:26 (two years ago) Permalink

def opposed to putting the sink or stove on island, poor use of real estate, and then in the case of that one the multiple levels reduce its utility even further

#40 is the most mindblowing imo
WHAT IS DOWN THAT LADDER

Anacostia Aerodrome (El Tomboto), Sunday, 9 October 2016 15:30 (two years ago) Permalink

honestly the best island is prob just a big butcher block with stools on one side and cabinets underneath, maybe a trash hole and some power outlets tho im not even sure about those anything that breaks up the counter space makes the whole thing so much less useful

lag∞n, Sunday, 9 October 2016 15:32 (two years ago) Permalink

21 is prob closest to ideal

sorry but if you think 'usefulness' and ease of food preparation are valid criteria for judging kitchen islands then what are you even doing in this thread? I guess you'd consider it an improvement if they gutted Versailles and refurnished it with IKEA readymades, smh

kitchen island restaurant booth has you eating next to dirty dishes or soap smells. kitchen island command center is a death trap.
