Some events are beautifully marvelous, like the recognition that the gamma ray
bursters happened frequently enough in the first half of the development of the
cosmos to be a powerful agent for sterilizing life-developing planets during that
time. This gives a plausible answer (given present Swift data) to Fermi's question,
"Where are they?" Answer: Nipped in the bud!

Hurray for Neil Gehrels! and for his mission named Swift! The Swift data show that
the frequency of these gamma ray bursters is decreasing as our cosmos ages,
suggesting that the chance for the development of life is increasing.

The idea of bursters having a dramatic effect on the development of life in the
cosmos was seriously proposed in 1999 or so, but the Swift data sets now
substantially improve the quality of the discussion. We have a useful article in:

I expect that the statistics will steadily improve, but I also expect that the main

extinction event could have happened during the last few billion years on earth,

our life-record that has remained somewhat mysterious in its cause.

The results reminded me of this bus shelter ad that I regularly passed in San Diego about 10 years ago. It featured someone jumping just like that and, in my memory, it read "HECKILINOR!" However, there are no google results for heckilinor, so I must have crossed a wire somewhere. Maybe saltando will provide some kind of a clue.
