The newsgroup sci.math had a famous contributor who seemed to think that thought there was something wrong with the definition of algebraic integers apparently due to a defect in the number 7. No amount of debate could sway him.

"this abstract lifestyle is not for everyone. if you look around at the fucking hundreds of thousands of homeless people in new york city, i'm the only one who can pull this shit off."

Treeship, Saturday, 20 September 2014 16:22 (eleven years ago)

i like how they foreground the fact that he is a "millenial" and then depict him describing his lifestyle as a brand. "i do homelessness differently".

Treeship, Saturday, 20 September 2014 16:26 (eleven years ago)

another fun thing about this video going viral is that people in the comments get to deny the reality of egregious poverty in america and argue that beggars make a good living and just "choose" to live that way.

i think it's a very revealing video. this guy is basically a drug addict and alcoholic having sex with women for shelter and elite daily spins it as a cool story about a cool guy living the dream. also the use of brandspeak that i talked about, this idea of "lifestyle" that obscures his lack of freedom, is a classic example of the way people like to see everything through the lens of individual choice no matter what the mitigating factors.

Treeship, Sunday, 21 September 2014 22:37 (eleven years ago)

Instead of shrinking, although thousands of people, to go today, I ate my very first shoot tear gas; the same day, I eat the seventh life of tear gas.

Finest antiquities, never imagined she would one day be me with tear gas attacks, the Government has never wanted to have with friends to take to the streets to fight for lighter than a breath of freedom. Tear gas smell strong and unique, but these alone, does not make you hard chrome hearts. Tear gas with two continuous blooms a moment at my feet, I couldn't believe my eyes. Are supposed to be people-oriented, to protect the Government of the people, when they threw tear gas into my body?

At that moment, along with the strong tear gas into my heart, is the burden of grief and disappointment, the discontented and tragic. I stood up for my city, if I sacrificed to become the cornerstone of Hong Kong's development, even though I eat 70 more tear gas, rubber bullets and hard to eat I have no objection. I have been regular and hard to read, and now teacher, nurturing talents for exactly which moment is that I became a mob?

Rioting makes me eat non-tear gas is not available? Since last night, by morning I in the Central and Central stayed for over 12 hours. During my eat ate tear gas from the central to the Admiralty. Demonstrators have no hands at all. Some of us, begs and pleads, or even kneel down to begging the question really wake up to reality. However we end up next, is a another tear gas. What is more, to the late, and the crowd suddenly without warning, the police focused cast.

Need to know were hit by tear gas and to serious injuries, what's wrong with our Government?? I am a teacher, today if you don't stand up, I really don't know how to tell my students about "morality", lecture "conscience".

You only live once, it is now or never, make your own choice, please. You can choose not to support me, but please respect me. As I watch, also belongs to you, and to everyone in the future.

In the movie, neither moose is dripping or leaving chocolate footprints. They are simply driving a truck loaded with chocolate, though it is eventually stated that they are themselves made of chocolate. In The Missing Moose book, the elder moose drips chocolate and junior does not, and the difficulty of dealing with solid chocolate characters is evident, especially when they're continuously dripping. Such highly fanciful material is difficult to script, and the inclusion of villains (in both productions they are kidnappers obsessed with chocolate) pushed both of these stories outside of what might be called a true Moskowitz universe. The villainous bird and alligator in Missing Moose were designed by Stewart but never intended to be evildoers. The movie's cast was designed by Stewart, but the villains were drawn reluctantly. "I didn't enjoy drawing mean characters," he recalls. "It's just not what I do. I did have some limited influence on the script; at one point they were going to have The American Rabbit flying up into the sky with one of the bad guys and threatening to drop him, and I said that can't be in there. And they didn't do it."

The trick here is to realise that cats' vocalizations are actually their attempts to interact with humans; they learn by imitation. No cat in the unpopulated wild ever miaows. The annoying noises your cat makes? That its impression of you.

Zoltan Gyongyossy1 day ago

I belive you why because last summer I went over to a farm for a week. one of the days I wook up hearing the cat say Hi Now this was imitaion of us humans but it woke me up saying hi hi hi hi repedatly i thought it was amazing

On the role of GRBs on life extinction in the Universe

Tsvi Piran, Raul Jimenez
(Submitted on 8 Sep 2014)
As a copious source of gamma-rays, a nearby Galactic Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) can be a
threat to life. Using recent determinations of the rate of GRBs, their luminosity
function and properties of their host galaxies, we estimate the probability that a
life-threatening (lethal) GRB would take place. Amongst the different kinds of GRBs,
long ones are most dangerous. There is a very good chance (but no certainty) that at
least one lethal GRB took place during the past 5 Gyr close enough to Earth as to
significantly damage life. There is a 50% chance that such a lethal GRB took place
during the last 500 Myr causing one of the major mass extinction events. Assuming
that a similar level of radiation would be lethal to life on other exoplanets
hosting life, we explore the potential effects of GRBs to life elsewhere in the
Galaxy and the Universe. We find that the probability of a lethal GRB is much larger
in the inner Milky Way (95% within a radius of 4 kpc from the galactic center),
making it inhospitable to life. Only at the outskirts of the Milky Way, at more than
10 kpc from the galactic center, this probability drops below 50%. When considering
the Universe as a whole, the safest environments for life (similar to the one on
Earth) are the lowest density regions in the outskirts of large galaxies and life
can exist in only ~ 10% of galaxies. Remarkably, a cosmological constant is
essential for such systems to exist. Furthermore, because of both the higher GRB
rate and galaxies being smaller, life as it exists on Earth could not take place at
z>0.5. Early life forms must have been much more resilient to radiation.

The presence of dwarf Pieral, who was so brilliant in the Cocteau classic directed by Jean Delannoy, THE ETERNAL RETURN, hints at Jean Cocteau as the inspiration for this nonsense. Cocteau wrote the guidebook for avant garde effects with his classic ORPHEE, and Fleischer studiously copies.

Staring at Jourdan kept my attention but I was quite disappointed at the misuse of Kinski here - it falls squarely in with his sincere love of working for "manageable" (read: HACK) directors.
