eeeeep. help.

I think I have an actual internet crush.

I'm feeling really giggly right now.

(Don't worry, it's not on an ILX0r.)

Evren Kader (Masonic Boom), Monday, 24 August 2009 10:07 (nine years ago) Permalink

I kinda have one too (non-ILX) but it's definitely something I can live with. Life's rich pageantry and all that.

define internet crush

warmsherry, Monday, 24 August 2009 10:44 (nine years ago) Permalink

I don't think I've ever had one ... nor will I ... it just seems weird to me ...

When you have warm thoughts for someone you've had a good correspondence with but haven't quite gotten around to meeting yet? It's not like I'm dying here.

maybe it's just me, but the IRL meeting thing is, er was, pretty integral for me in terms of developing crushes on people. Not to be disparaging about anyone having internet crushes ... I'm glad things are looking less bleak for you Kate.

I feel a bit gooey right now. It's a nice feeling.

We've been kind of jokey flirting for ages - in the sort of way that indie record geeks flirt over their record collections. (He is an DJ) And the whole time I've been all "ha ha, kidding" when I joke to his brother that I pick on his because I'm practising for when he is my brother-in-law.

But he just posted a picture - well, a promo picture of them that went with an interview as he posted the interview - and he is actually CUUUUUUUUUUUUTE.

And now I'm all EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

But I kind of joked and said all "ha ha" and posted the picture to the "Looking Good" thread where all the gurls usually gather and perve over hot men. Still teasing, like. But he was all "how do I take advantage of this now?"

and I'm all double EEEEEEEE because I'm trying to double think this and figure out if he is joke flirting still or if I should now stop flirting because I might actually not be joking and might be serious and actually, like, attracted to him. (in which case RUN AWAY RUN AWAY I still believe that my liiiiiiiiiiking a boy is, like, the worst insult ever.)

Hence why they're just warm feelings rather than anything keeping me up at night for now.

I mean, I always try to meet people I've bumped into online, even sans crush, at the earliest opportunity! Most of Brit ILX seems to have found this out XD

...but in this case, it's definitely a slow-burner, more about correspondence than affection

Problem is, if we met in real life, he would probably have taken one look at me and thought "fat, ugly, mad as a box of frogs" and never have got to the point of flirting over obscure records.

I am going to try and take one massive reality check and stop this nonsensnse.

But at least he seems to have taken it as the compliment it was intended and not the massive insult that boys usually infer if a girl says they're cute.

Evren Kader (Masonic Boom), Monday, 24 August 2009 11:03 (nine years ago) Permalink

I've engaged in this behavior far too many times over the years. Sometimes it works out wonderfully, and has been the catalyst for some travels all over the US and Canada (well, Toronto anyway) that I'd otherwise probably never have done, but sometimes it's fucked up and hurtful and shoulda never been done.

Still, it's really fun to be crushing on somebody, so good for you!!!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 August 2009 11:11 (nine years ago) Permalink

Reality has intervened and sense has been seen.

Evren Kader (Masonic Boom), Monday, 24 August 2009 18:10 (nine years ago) Permalink

Honestly, Kate, I don't see anything wrong with indulging the flirtation for the sake of a bit of fun. I can understand not wanting to, if you feel like it would be pointless because your instincts would be to see it to its, er, logical conclusion.

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Monday, 24 August 2009 20:05 (nine years ago) Permalink

If it is harmless fun, then it's fine.

I guess I am just trying to do the bucket of cold water reality check to remind myself that it is *just* harmless fun. And not to get carried away and think that it could be anything more - or even to want for anything more.

I am just so used to being knocked back and having to put KIDDING KIDDING KIDDING over anything that might be construed as flirting so as to not frighten the horses, so to speak. I don't want my emotions to get engaged. Which they weren't up until this point. Up until now, it was just a "get happy when you see him online, go and read his posts if you see he's been posting because what he says will be smart and cool and it will be fun to spar with him."

I need to get it back there.

I hear ya on that ... good luck!

I will of course delete that post the moment that his flight touches down, in terror that he might google my name and find that post which would kind of identify him.

... or are afraid of disappointment ...

Yeah, the worst email = "I've met someone"

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 21:37 (nine years ago) Permalink

One of my relationships started out as a long distance once (we'd met/hooked up at a party, and he was going to be coming back to the area in a few months) ... that was actually what got me to get my first email account, actually. And there was this whole new slew of mistakes one could make in courtship associated with it.

what happened? i am confused. (sarahel), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 21:43 (nine years ago) Permalink

No email at all for ages and then ever is the worst, actually.

At least with "I've met someone" you know for certain.

Evren Kader (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 21:43 (nine years ago) Permalink

It will pass.

If I ignore it, it will go away.

Evren Kader (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 22:00 (nine years ago) Permalink

Don't ignore it yet! Things are still good.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 22:36 (nine years ago) Permalink

yeah, it sounds like it's still in the light-hearted fun stage. Have fun while it lasts!

Indeed. At any rate it's no time to start doing math.

Oh noes, I feel awful and now am going to delete all those posts because I don't think I should talk about this because talking about this encourages wierness.

I met my fiancee online in a forum for Toronto residents.. He thought my icon was "cute" and we started talking. A few months after I broke up with my then-BF I suggested he take me out for a drink to celebrate my birthday, we moved in six months later! I love internet crushes! I totally had one on him the first time I saw a photo, even though I was taken (by a douche, so it was okay to emotionally cheat). I say go for it and don't feel bad! I never liked hot guys seeing what I looked like either but they all love me & I'm sure this dude (if a sensible type) thinks you're crushable too!

In retaliation for banning all the Britishes from his domain, I've just banned KBT from TMI. Seems only fair.

Why should I try? even the people I thought were friends are against me.

I need to kill all crushes. All of them. People are only even vaguely tolerant towards me out of pity or fear.

I think I finally broke the habit of getting internet crushes on women after the last one which ended in a broken engagement after a whirlwind courtship that, looking back on it, made ZERO sense. I'm basically asexual online and off at this point.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 14 October 2015 05:43 (three years ago) Permalink

For years I was like "Wah! I get internet crushes on people and they never get internet crushes on meeee!" But then this past year I became the focus of a really quite intense internet crush by someone else. Which went Horribly Wrong and led to 4 months of stalking culminating in harassment and doxxing to the point where I had to get the police involved. So now if I see anything on social media with even a whiff of flirting I get paranoid and freak out and insist on shutting that down FAST. Which probably isn't any healthier a behaviour than walking about with giant heaving crushes on everyone.

So you know *shrug emoji* and no more crushes and concentrating my energy on the idea of sex with robots.
