spooning is not really intended for sleeping imo. may lead to pain and being soaked w/ sweat

My ex and I came up with an arrangement where I'd play big spoon until she fell asleep, at which point I'd gingerly extract my arm and roll onto my back and put a hand on her waist so we stayed in contact without me losing all feeling in my extremities.

Experiment! If your body is slightly above your partner's (lengthwise that is, not heightwise), you can place your arm under the pillow just beyond her head, or in that small gap between the mattress and wall/headboard, or have your head on the pillow and your arm cradling the outside of the pillow so it doesn't get crushed. Or move downward in relation to the inner (not "little") spoon and put your arm under the nape of her neck. Harder to describe than to do; photos and diagrams don't help much either because the arm in question is necessarily covered up and out of view. Somewhere I saw a pillow made for this purpose with an arm cutout on the underside. I find a memory-foam mattress or topper helps.
I prefer facing each other cuddled up to spooning anyway. That I have mastered!

never. sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and my arm feels like it's gonna fall off because I've been sleeping on it and there's no bloodflow and that's withOUT anyone sleeping next to me. ;_;

i've done that with my legs... awoken and fallen flat on my face because they are both temporarily dead.
― SYNTAX ERROR (remy bean), Sunday, 22 August 2010 00:50 (thirteen years ago) link
hah it's really scary - it'll be the middle of the night and my arm will not respond to my brainwaves and it will have no feeling. I'm glad I'm not a blackout drunk (yet) otherwise I'm sure I would have lost a limb by now.

If the *inner* spoon is particularly hourglassy, under the stomach is extremely comfortable and just the best dang ol' time, intimacy-wise.

ass-to-ass w/ hand on her hip is the best compromise I've found
― a cross between lily allen and fetal alcohol syndrome (milo z), Monday, 30 August 2010 05:12 (thirteen years ago) link
Sometimes I have fallen asleep with hand on her hip or otherwise lightly snuggly, and then she tries to move my hand or roll over or something, and I get really grumbly in my sleep and object and even say aloud, "No!" I don't remember doing these things, but I hear about them later.

I have the same problem - absolutely impossible to sleep spooning, almost as impossible to sleep touching. Does everyone feel like this or are we just a bunch of message board addicts with greater than normal fears of intimacy?

No, I can quite happily fall asleep tucked away as either spoon...

Basically I don't sleep while touching at all. And every time I fussily arrange my pillows at night and sink gratefully into them, I feel a twinge of guilt that I'm depriving my partner of something sweet and important, that I'm some kind of overly fussy neurotic who can't relax if there's any stimuli. Also if I don't support my feet the right way etc, I wake up with horrible back pain, so this isn't just fussiness on my part.
How sad would you be if yr partner slept like a corpse, with hands folded on stomach, and didn't want to be touched? I wonder how much of a priority I should make it to find a new & better mattress so that maybe I don't have to do this.

I have to admit I'd find it a bit sad if I couldnt cuddle in bed, L! But then again, one's partner's comfort and health is also important!

If you married someone like that, you might need an arrangement allowing a cuddler on the side.
