Let us talk about headphones and headphone amps. Preferably good ones.

And since this thread is on IMM I'm talking about specific headphones - studio headphones for recording/mixing (although mixing on headphones isn't really recommended).

I'm looking for a good headphone amp (good = amplifying well while keeping pristine sound quality) which has at least three outputs and isn't too expensive (350 bucks is the limit). Does anyone use such a thing and can suggest one?

one month passes...

There probably was no response as your three output requirement might have thrown people off. Are you talking about three headphone jacks, or just options for optical and digital outputs too?

I'm a fan of Meier, particularly for the crossfeed. The lowest end falls in your price range - http://www.meier-audio.homepage.t-online.de/amplifiers.htm

There's plenty of headphones by Sony and Audio Technica (ATH-M50) that are marketed as studio headphones. I'm not sure that they're all that different from other ones, as there's no such thing as completely transparent/neutral headphones.

If you haven't already, research at http://www.head-fi.org/

I am actually selling a pair of Audio Technica at the moment for $85, and a Practical Devices XM5 DAC/Amp for $120 :)

Thanks for your help, I don't know that much about headphone amps and finally want to get my first one!

With three outputs I meant three headphone jacks, I wasn't probably clear enough. I will definitely check out those Meiers and the Head-Fi page. Too bad I don't live in the US, could have made a cool deal with your offers.

I think you can find what you need for the amp with pro audio gear, but consumer/audiophile stuff never has three jacks.

Here's a thread on studio headphones:

Pro audio gear is indeed what I'm looking for. Thanks for the comprehensive list btw.
