Pretty sure Fender Japan >> Fender everywhere else right now.

i just bought a 50th anniversary squier strat off of craigslist....pretty damn good little guitar from the mid 90s (apparently this particular squier is popular among modders because it used the full sized, dimensions standard strat body not the slightly slimmed down/lighter squier body type and is all alder)

The first and to date only vintage Fender I've played that has ever really filled me with desire was an early 80s Japanese Squire Jazz Bass. What a fantastic instrument. They're still cheaper than a new Custom Shop Jazz.

i've had a mexican mid-90s jazz bass for years and it's great....esp good because i did a affordable swap-out from the cheaper stock bridge to a leo quan badass bridge, which helps a lot and is super easy to do

I dunno, without a built-in USB port, or NFL branding, it just doesn't seem true to the Fender aesthetic.

So I recently sold some gear, including 1 gently used Mexican Telecaster and an Epiphone 339 (I still like them fine, but I have many more guitars than I need).
It would seem that Fenders in general hold value remarkably well - paid three hundred something for it, and got two hundred something for it. The Epiphone, not so much.

They actually almost look cool. If they cost normal blues jr price and didn't have the corny "aged" dial panel I would like them.

For that price you can only get a brand new looking one made out of normal guitar materials, sorry.

No problem, there's another $700 earmarked to have it professionally weathered by an aftermarket weatherer with a roofing torch.

I will always rep for G&L ASAT tribute model. They usually retail closer to 400, but you can find them used closer to 300.

I spend a lot of time in high-end custom builder online world, and they're giggling about that article. "It's cos they suck! We're paying our rent these days. Try making good guitars, corporate weenies!"

You know, there was recently an article on Pitchfork on how to set up your own on-the-cheap home recording studio and the bare essentials of what you will need to create and record your own music. There was maybe a single, very brief, passing mention of a guitar in the whole article and it kind of bummed me out. But, you know what? I eventually arrived at the thought that, anymore, (good quality) guitars are not in the price range of the DIY-minded. I would love to see a lot more beginning musicians gravitate naturally towards picking up a guitar instead of a synthesizer, but most guitar builders at this point have dug their own graves.
That, and the elitism that seems to run rampant in the whole scene anymore. Somebody linked an article over on ILM a while back where a guitar magazine had was lamenting the decline in popularity of the guitar with young musicians, but on the same cover of the same magazine was an article titled "Hack Pentatonic Shapes." So, I mean, yeah. Nobody wants to hang out with assholes that act like that.
