Ok this month, I pull the trigger on devi ever stuff I think. Been a huge fan since the effector 13 days, and fuck it, she deserves the money. Unfortunately, I am having a baffling time picking out which to go with - anybody have thoughts? http://www.deviever.com/fx/

Also, I have to admit this was a bit of a motivator:

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/devi-ever-s-fancy-new-vagina

Being a trans person in the music gear industry has to be a goddamn nightmare given the shitshow gender politics that continue on forever.

been seeking somebody that does upscale wahs, so i am considering these dudes

Very happy with the Area 51 wah: http://area51tubeaudiodesigns.com

Looks cool, but I think they are direct only

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 August 2013 07:23 (ten years ago) link

can i use this as a general pedal talk thread since i can't remember what any of the old ones were called? i mean i should probably just scrap together enough spare change for a new pedal and go play @ jjj's candy store for an afternoon but does anyone have impressions on that crowther hot cake thing? i had seen demos and stuff in the past and they didn't leave much of an impression but what the dude is doing w/ the tele's vol knob in this one makes me think i would keep it forever.

arby's, Thursday, 8 August 2013 14:55 (ten years ago) link

haha trust me, actually having money is not a requirement to play shit at my shop, this fact is proven every day.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 August 2013 15:48 (ten years ago) link

hahaha. but i want to come home with a new toy! august is triple paycheck month otherwise i wouldn't be looking at any pedals anywhere right now so soon probably

two weeks pass...

so added the budda pedals to the shop, now getting together an order to add the devi ever stuff. which is daunting because she makes like 45 different fuzzes. anybody have any faves they want to recommend?

haha and thx to recent dad brain i didnt realize that i already posted something abt this in the thread. sigh.

i am of a mixed mind abt the budda pedals - they sound great but man, they have that terrible graphics disease i think. not that it should matter but hey, it matters:

http://www.budda.com/gear/pedals/index.cfm

oh and also i got in the new idiotbox dimension x and it is, per usual, batshit crazy:

My favorites of hers are the Bit and Hounds Tooth, but those might not necessarily be the ones with the broadest appeal.

doom & gloom from the boys allowed in the room (how's life), Friday, 23 August 2013 16:15 (ten years ago) link

i was planning on buying the bit, and i really like the houndstooth as well, so those both probably will make the list. basically my starter list right now is

aenima
bit: legend of fuzz
disaster fuzz
hyperion
rocket
shoe gazer
soda meiser
devine hammer
never drive
krackle fuzz
houndstooth

but i probably need to cool my jets a little bit on ordering 11 fuzz pedals

oh yes, i already have it on preorder and am stooooooked

this is an interesting thing that we are probably going to stock:

http://www.brimstoneaudio.com/crossover-distortion.html

i am actually more intrigued by the upcoming ouroboros (its in the laboratory section) - crossover separated dual effects loops sounds like it could be both super functional and super crazy.

excited about the intentional phallus-y (sarahell), Friday, 4 October 2013 08:39 (ten years ago) link

And just added 2 new lines

Devi ever (!!! Been waiting to do this for years)

And super promising upstart Vick Audio. Rams head muff clone with tone mod for $99! Reissues of pedals that no one gives a shit about other than me (Jordan vico vibe)! A fucking Sam Ash/Astro Fuzz clone! Colorsound fuzz for $69! Only one other dealer in the world (literally) that seems to be a shitheel that doesn't bother to actually stock any of his shit. I am overcome by geeeeeeek.

http://vickaudio.distinctiveturnings.com/index.php#container

Plz note, his YouTube demos kind of suck but the stuff sounds awesome IRL. Graphics are not awesome, but handwired perfboard versions of $$$$ pedals for $100 or less? Crazytown.

New Moog Minifoogers seem cool, especially the delay: http://www.moogmusic.com/news/announcing-minifooger-analog-effects-guitar-bass

Love how the tremolo is set up to have an expression pedal. I've been interested in something like that for a while.

Colorsound fuzz for $69!

That's insane! When I was in the market for one I couldn't find it for less than $250. Ended up going with a Guyatone (tiny orange dealie) which worked out great.

I've got a similar set-up going with an expression pedal and a Strymon Flint. Def. a sound worth exploring.

what's the main difference between that delay and a line 6?

idiotbox mad doctor and the catalinbread semaphore have exp pedal in as well. plus the semaphore has tap tempo.

Yeah, I did some googling yesterday and found a bunch of trems pre-rigged for expression pedals.

got in 4 of the Catalinbread Belle Epochs and sold them in less than an hour. btw, they sound stupid good.

I've used my week off work building my own pedals and think I've reached the limits of my ability. Harmonic Percolator? Check. Crossover Distortion? Check. But the MXR Blue Box? There's a lot of very tight, very precise soldering in there - I finished the board with the last of the light today and am kind of dreading completing it tomorrow, there are a couple of really vulnerable-looking diodes that apparently have a really high chance of you cooking them and I have a horrible feeling that I've given them too much heat.

Ian Glasper's trapped in a scone (aldo), Friday, 18 October 2013 19:48 (ten years ago) link

It's unbelievably sad how awful I was at building/modding pedals when I gave it a go. You see these forums full of dudes just all like "yeah, I just swapped out my op amp" or whatever, but I evidently lack the dexterity to solder even the most basic radio shack like, blinking led light kit or whatever. lol

how's life, Friday, 18 October 2013 20:04 (ten years ago) link

And I was right to worry. Doesn't fkn work.

Ian Glasper's trapped in a scone (aldo), Sunday, 20 October 2013 15:19 (ten years ago) link

I mean, where do I even start fault finding this?

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2870/10382909694_a21f9cd2b8.jpg

I've got it wired up at the moment to check and it just acts in bypass, the board seems to have no function and the pots don't change the tone at all. :-(

Ian Glasper's trapped in a scone (aldo), Sunday, 20 October 2013 15:30 (ten years ago) link

Is the board from a kit supplier? Most of those dudes are pretty helpful if you hit them up with a problem.

Does the led engage when you put it into circuit?

ACA: not bad, needs more death panels (jjjusten), Sunday, 20 October 2013 15:40 (ten years ago) link

Also do you have a variable temp/wattage soldering gun? With tight stuff like that I usually crank it down quite a bit and just wait longer to get solder flow.

ACA: not bad, needs more death panels (jjjusten), Sunday, 20 October 2013 15:42 (ten years ago) link

I normally leave off the led until I'm putting the switch in, it's just got a test rig at the moment with a battery clip and the jacks and it should work in that configuration. Because it bypasses through I've got a good feeling about the soldering throughout, but your point about the power might actually be a good one. Multimeter gets broken out tomorrow, and I'll drop the board maker a line.

Ian Glasper's trapped in a scone (aldo), Sunday, 20 October 2013 15:55 (ten years ago) link

If you let me know who the board builder is I can hit up some of my builder friends and see if they have experiences w/that board/problem

Ian Glasper's trapped in a scone (aldo), Sunday, 20 October 2013 21:33 (ten years ago) link

No luck with any of my guys, unfortunately. Did you hear from the board builder?

ACA: not bad, needs more death panels (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 October 2013 19:52 (ten years ago) link

Been busy all week and want to do a bit of basic fault finding before I speak to him. Thanks for asking though.

Ian Glasper's trapped in a scone (aldo), Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:50 (ten years ago) link

So, I got this working. Embarrassingly, the battery I was using to test it was slightly run down - not massively, because it was still good enough to power other pedals, but seemingly enough because a new battery did the trick.

Then I soldered in the switch and put it in the enclosure. At which point it didn't work again, only one of the pots has an effect and it seems to be in 'always on' bypass. I suspect I have made a basic error while wiring the switch in, not least because I did the last couple of posts in the near-dark. I'm going to have my next chance to look at that part of it on Friday afternoon, but at least I now know the circuit board is good.

In other news, has anybody ever made/bought a harmonic percolator clone that doesn't have a huge volume drop and can point me in the direction of the circuit/fix?

In other, other news I bought a Tyrant by Nine of Swords cheap on ebay and boy, is it ever sludgey. I am really tempted to buy another of their pedals just to see whether they're all as good (ymmv whether sludge is yr thing).

Ian Glasper's trapped in a scone (aldo), Wednesday, 6 November 2013 14:29 (ten years ago) link

ive checked around re: the harmonic percolator clone and no dice. could you just do a two in one box with a clean boost after the circuit?

ok, acquiring more pedal lines for the shop, currently talking to skreddy and strymon. any thoughts on either of those?

Got a Strymon El Capistan a few months ago. LOVE IT. Best/most fun delay I've ever used. It has a tape crinkle simulation setting!

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 11 November 2013 16:35 (ten years ago) link

love both. they're kinda opposite propositions vibewise.

strymon = digital fx mad scientists, pack a ton of great-sounding features into a bombproof stompbox package. very pro as an outfit afaik.

skreddy = one of the last great golden ears/hand-selected mojo parts guys. thing is, he really does have golden ears and puts a trendies amount of thought and care into his builds. one man operation, super good guy. come for the muff variants, stay for the crew driver mini deluxe. heard good things about the one-knob phaser too.
