i'm starting a new band and everytime i bring this to jams my bandmates are like, That Sounds Like Some Cheesy 90s Techno or That Sounds Like Nintendo... how do i hit that sweet middle ground

the Rhodes-y/square wave-y sounds respond very well to distortion

the presets are generally awful. reprogramming the sounds on this is *such* a bitch that, while possible, pedals are probably easier.

thx for the tip! i ran it through my boss ds-1 and dd-6 once, it was kinda cool

DS-1 is kinda crap. It's a standard starter pedal though. I used one for a while then got something better. Try it with the Heavy Metal 2 pedal.

all the presets that have these ridiculous envelope and arpeggio patterns built on are p worthless unfortunately (and that's a fair chunk of the presets iirc)

keys are so fucking tiny it's actually pretty difficult to play as a keyboard imo

i kinda like mini-keys because i have stubby fingers, sometimes it's hard to adjust back to full-size. not that i'm a competent keyboard player in any way.

i haven't used the microKorg since '09/10, but did record an album using that as the only synth. lent it to a friend, and at some point i asked for it back after watching some of those Dorian Concept videos. of course i haven't so much as turned it on since.

I messed with my bandmate's loaner from her boyfriend (who's had a fair modicum of success in his musical career here) the other week and you just need to dump most of the presets and program from scratch like he did. had some big sinewave-y basses and stuff on there. it is very powerful (MS2000 roots) but it's not an inspiring interface.

+ agree with pedal suggestions, I put everything through delay or reverb, it solves all problems.

I ordered a miniligue in March and am still waiting.

my minilogue lust has died down, i realized i'm happier mangling audio via plugins than trying to get fresh sounds in synthland.

I just want a bunch of mini noisemakers to fuck around with live, dedicated interfaces etc.
Dreams of the one man noise band refuse to die.

Korg have just announced a revamped Microkorg and a Volca that (just?) does bass kicks.

what's a good synth to level up to after microkorg?

in truth, i probably need to spend more time with the microkorg before making an intelligent decision on which to level-up to. in terms of micro-korg presets i like the 'retro' settings and not the techno stuff, but find it sounds a bit too video-gamey-ey. and i'm not good enough at programming my own synths to land on stuff that doesn't sound videogame-ey, either. ideal would be something warm and analog with a more intuitive interface

I have a MicroKorg XL. I've never really tried to edit presets, mostly use it for synth bass in a band I play in. I found that the Volca Bass is actually better for that then the MK, so now I just use it as a MIDI controller for the Volca.

For programming a microkorg you might want to look at synthgraphics. Granted buying the Behringer knob thing and the overlay is probably as expensive, still it might make it more fun.

I bought the same thing for my Juno 1 and it changed my life. Generally I recommend everybody buy a Roland Juno 1 and the BCR with overlay, as it's a great sounding synth and still cheap.

is programming a microKorg THAT difficult? it checks a lot of boxes for me right now and is within my budget. i'm not that worried about the presets as long as i can modify them, and i don't care if the UI is complicated as long as it makes some sort of sense.

i had a microkorg years ago and it wasn't hard to program. if you already know you won't mind using a menu then you won't be disappointed

I haven't used mine since 2010 probably but I've been thinking about going back, seeing if I can't get some interesting sounds out of it with pedals etc.

Never used the computer editor though, just tweaked knobs.
