touring for n00bs

Just four dates, but we've never been out of Knoxville with each other, and I'm a little afeared. We're doing memphis, jackson, hattiesburg, and new albany. Driving. Any last minute advice? Conversely, hit me with a Touring for Dummies.

Have fun. Plan to lose money if you can afford to. Driving more than 8 hours before playing a show is not recommended, but that's more of a west coast problem. Bring deodorant, snacks, flasks. Don't, like one band we played with, leave your drummer behind in the last city you were in, a six hour drive away (when you have a six hour drive in the other direction to get to the next gig tomorrow). But even if that happens, don't get too pissy, still have fun.

Multi-vitamins and orange juice are urgent and key.

multivitamins are something i had not listen on my "to take". seems like a good idea.

- document your equipment: take photographs, write down serial numbers, etc.
- make one of your bandmates sleep in the van so no one tries to steal it.

MTS OTM about equipment -- either that or always take everything into the place you're staying in (even if it's a "very safe" area, at least bring in any instruments and stuff that'd be easy to make off with)

Also, this probably won't be such an issue since your tour is pretty short, but last tour my band (well, three of the four of us) would try to wake up as many mornings as possible and go for a jog. All the floor sleeping, liquor and fast food takes a very quick toll on your body otherwise.

any advice i offer will make me sound like a worried parent, which i guess is not such a bad thing. also, may i suggest a sleeping pad, in additon to your sleeping bag & pillow?

I'd sure hope that ibuprofen falls under the category of "multivitamin"

phone numbers. of everyone/everywhere you're going, on paper and in your sat-0-lite tele-faux-nuh.

the last night, i slept on a bare floor with no blanket! ten hours of blissful slumber. the multivitamins were one morsel of imm advice i took to heart (and to hattiesburg) -- would have felt considerably more shitty without them.
