I've recently acquired a CS-3 Compressor/Sustainer and an NS-2 Noise Reducer. How can I get the best out of these?
I take it I would have something like Wah > CS-3 > Distortion > NS-2 > Delay ? But are there any nice setting combos for these?

Hello again. Can someone give me a bit of a primer on pedal boards?

I've recently acquired a number of new pedals and I'm getting fed up of having to set them all up each time I want to practice. I don't really know a lot about pedal boards, how they work, which ones are best to get, how to accommodate a number of pedals and what to look out for.

Currently I have a Diageo power supply and daisy chain (which weren't cheap) but it only accommodates about 6 pedals. I take it it's not safe to use a double daisy chain. If I get a powered board, will I even need to use the supply any more?

1 pONO 3v3Ry+h1n G!!!1 (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 11:53 (twelve years ago)

its totally safe to continue daisy chaining, as long as you have a power supply with enough milliamps to do it. figure that a 1600 mA supply can probably easily handle 8 pedals without any sweat. diago makes one thats 1000 mA and one that's 3000 mA iirc. any idea which one you have?

also i just picked up their line of pedal boards and i am pretty impressed for the price. i personally hate the limitations of boards with built in supplies and avoid them like the plague.

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 20:25 (twelve years ago)

oh and also you basically want to place the ns-2 right after whatever is creating noise in your chain, so if you are primarily dealing with guitar sourced noise it would go in the front, if the distortion is the culprit, right after that, etc. comps can accentuate noise quite a bit (remove nerd info) so keep that in mind as well.

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 20:27 (twelve years ago)

Cheers jjjusten. So I was looking at the Boss board but if you reckon powered boards are a no no then I might change my mind. I'll take a look at my power supply.

I found out if I put the CS-3 after the majority of my effects it works out a lot better. The distortion pedal was very often playing a lot quieter than the clean guitar which was no good, so I've pretty much got my effects then the compressor, then the NS-2 which I'm not sure is all that orthodox, but what they hey.

Just checked my receipt (I'm at work) and it's a Diago PS10 Micropower9 Pedalboard Power Supply with a PS02 Deluxe Daisy Chain. Not sure what that means for me.

1 pONO 3v3Ry+h1n G!!!1 (dog latin), Thursday, 17 April 2014 11:34 (twelve years ago)

Only 1000ma according to the site, so that's a bit shoot considering I plonked down £25 for it. Oh well.

oops I went crazy and bought an Electro-Harmonix Cathedral reverb on impulse, RIP my bank account.

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 17 April 2014 22:22 (twelve years ago)

Heh. I've been really close (mentally) to making a disastrous pedal purchase.

keep calm and nahkchivan (how's life), Thursday, 17 April 2014 22:30 (twelve years ago)

what is it? GO FOR IT. My perhaps sketchy justification is that as I got it fairly cheap on ebay I can always sell it again for around the same price.

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 17 April 2014 22:52 (twelve years ago)

I passed up a terribly cheap used pedal that I want on Guitar Center this morning (Earthquaker Depths for $119). But I don't want to support them, so I didn't give in.

What I want to pull the trigger on is some really nice versatile fuzz with a lotta dials but I know I have to put it off until at least mid-summer (for various reasons). Like, even just BUYING IT NOW!/PAYING FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE! on the credit card won't work because I know I have some upcoming household purchases I'm going to have to make. : (

Also about to get my first shot at the Skreddy Bloody Knuckles as soon as the shipment arrives. Stoked.

Oh holy shit, the bloody knuckle is already discontinued. Well, guess I won't be dealing on the price on that one then.

Skreddy Lunar Module mini deluxe is mandatory around these parts.

Still pretty confused about pedal boards. They really do vary wildly. I'd build my own but pfff... What does everyone else use?

1 pONO 3v3Ry+h1n G!!!1 (dog latin), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 11:24 (twelve years ago)

A piece of wood. They're currently secured with Velcro, but I've found I don't really like that. They tend to flop around and the Velcro itself gets really dirty. Someone (either on here or some other board) recommended securing the pedals to the board using bicycle chain links attached to y the screws on the bottom of the pedals. Been thinking about trying that approach.

With a non-powered board, how are you powering the pedals? My Diago thing only goes up to 6 pedals I think, and I'm planning to get a couple more. I've seen things like the Voodoo Lab Pedal Power +2 but these strike me as expensive and probably for people who are a bit more pro than I am. But I don't want loads of hiss etc...

I just use a OneSpot, but mine is strictly for at-home use.

Nothing wrong with a one spot or similar really. Power bricks often have other voltage options (18v, voltage sag, etc) and sometimes better isolation (although not always, T. Rex has a couple non ISO bricks which is, well, scammy and stupid).

Same here tbh. Most versatile/addictive fuzz face i've ever played.

Heh, I didn't even last a week either. Found a solidgoldfx Formula 76 (a four-knob Super Fuzz-ish box) for super cheap and lost the will to resist. Anyone have opinions on solidgoldfx?

I'm building my own from instrumental panel facing I found at an aerospace junkyard.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 21:06 (twelve years ago)

I'm also thinking about getting a delay pedal (assuming delay is generally more useful than reverb). Is the Boss DD series a good start or are there better options out there? Analogue?

1 pONO 3v3Ry+h1n G!!!1 (dog latin), Thursday, 24 April 2014 13:17 (twelve years ago)

everyone has their favorite delay and there are a zillion different flavors but imo the Boss stuff is classic for a reason and a great place to start. personally, i find i prefer analog or analog-voiced delays because they usually have fewer parameters to control and they're easier for my little brain to grasp, but not because they're better,

resulting post (rogermexico.), Thursday, 24 April 2014 15:10 (twelve years ago)

My advice with delay pedals (I mean really all pedals) is seriously, go to a store and listen to as many as possible, trust your ears, ignore everyone else. Well, except me.

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 April 2014 15:14 (twelve years ago)

I know that sounds tongue and cheek but seriously, pedals are just like guitars, there is no one size fits all solution anymore - this is why, despite all rational business sense, I have no online store, despite the fact that I expect we will have close to 1000 pedals in stock by the end of this year (and despite the fact that I do a lot of national and international business). I try to at least be an intermediary either via email or the phone, because I can direct people to accurate demos, find out what they are trying to get a pedal to actually do, get reference points for tones they are looking for etc.

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 April 2014 15:22 (twelve years ago)

why they shut down the guitar shop near me is beyond me. there isn't a decent music shop for miles now.

1 pONO 3v3Ry+h1n G!!!1 (dog latin), Thursday, 24 April 2014 15:25 (twelve years ago)

but no that makes sense jjjusten. guess it's a trip up to denmark street for me.

I love the Idiot Box Dimension X delay and it's super versatile (including doing some things I've never got another pedal to do), but availability of them (especially in Britain) is a nightmare unless you buy direct from Matt.

Berk errs Gibbs/Ox (aldo), Thursday, 24 April 2014 17:41 (twelve years ago)

Just FYI Aldo, you know I'm one of idiotboxes 5 dealers or whatever right?

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 April 2014 17:45 (twelve years ago)

I kind of remembered you saying you had a D4 distortion (which is another great pedal which works in a different way from most others of the same effect type) but hadn't put two and two together to have you as a dealer.

Love Matt's stuff, never had a bad thing from him.

Berk errs Gibbs/Ox (aldo), Thursday, 24 April 2014 17:48 (twelve years ago)

The Frequency Mangler might be my favourite effect of his.

Berk errs Gibbs/Ox (aldo), Thursday, 24 April 2014 17:49 (twelve years ago)

I love the dimension x, but it's definitely an odd beast, very lofi and hard to tame. Matt is out of it at the moment iirc.

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 April 2014 17:50 (twelve years ago)

I think he has one uk dealer, joes pedals or something like that? And yeah, the frequency mangler is awesome.

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 April 2014 17:51 (twelve years ago)

I had noticed nearly everything is out of stock, that explains it.

Have you tried the Voivod pedal? If so, what's it like?

Berk errs Gibbs/Ox (aldo), Thursday, 24 April 2014 17:52 (twelve years ago)

It's pretty heavy, less fuzzy than the dungeon master but despite being a purported bass pedal I've mostly sold it to guitar dudes, esp baritone guys. The acid etch also looks awesome. I try to keep all his stuff in stock, but he only does batches of 10 at a time, so it can get tricky. I have a standing "I will buy anything new you make and I don't care what it is" understanding with him, so I've heard everything he's made so far, and it's all pretty amazing.

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 April 2014 17:56 (twelve years ago)

Awesome. I might just have to buy it.

Berk errs Gibbs/Ox (aldo), Thursday, 24 April 2014 18:18 (twelve years ago)

FYI: Tell Me All You Know About Delay Pedals

Still love the Moog delay. If I was buying new right now, I'd probably get the Moog Mini delay.
