The best and maybe ONLY song about how you are where you are, get used to it, it's ok really man EVER. Fucking catchy, and even kinda funky. AND it has Eno singing on it, that's never a bad thing, is it?

Who cares?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 4 August 2003 14:13 (twenty years ago) link

I made a video for that song... of course I got jipped out of the best music video award in the festival I entered it into. Ah i guess it was foolish to think I could win something two years in a row.

It is a damn good song, but I can't give much credit to David Byrne for it's lyrical content. He says he got the lyrics directly from a evangelist he heard on the radio. Him and Eno were obsessed with those colorful fellow. See also "My life in the Bush of Ghosts", which they collected all the samples for during a road trip with the radio on and a tape recorder. I can't think of an album early that so prominently features audio and vocal sampling... can anyone else?
David Byrne has frequently admitted that he has no idea what the hell he is doing lyrically, he just likes the way things go together, and doesn't worry much about what he's trying to say. But of course, the music is usually top notch. I give Once In A Lifetime a 10.

Adrian McCoy (Adrian McCoy), Monday, 4 August 2003 18:52 (twenty years ago) link

I care, a lot, especially if ENO is involved. The 'pictures of Eno' thread is still my favourite one ever (revive that, somebody). I want to hear this song, did you tape it for me? And HAHAHAHA Adrian, exactly how could Andrew possibly be making fun of you by starting this thread - clarify please.

Livvie (Livvie), Monday, 4 August 2003 22:19 (twenty years ago) link

Geez he's paranoid! Maybe took Andrew's advice and smoked some pot.

Morons.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 00:21 (twenty years ago) link

No I taped you another one, but Eno's all over that album. I think he sings most of the chorus on the one I taped ('Crosseyed and Painless'), actually.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 00:36 (twenty years ago) link

I should GET that album, presuming you are talking about 'Diamond Head'. I wish I was listening to Eno right now.

Livvie (Livvie), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 00:48 (twenty years ago) link

No it's "Remain in Light" by Talking Heads. Close enough.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 01:13 (twenty years ago) link

Well I should get THAT one too. I like records.

Livvie (Livvie), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 01:30 (twenty years ago) link

Adrian McCoy (Adrian McCoy), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 03:52 (twenty years ago) link

I have Talking Heads '77, Remain in Light, and Speaking in Tongues on vinyl, and they are just a few feet away from where I now sit.

If only I had a record player to listen to them on!

Adrian McCoy (Adrian McCoy), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 03:13 (twenty years ago) link

My record player is in Texas... along with my bed, two television sets, my old smoking paraphanalia, a couple of really old video game consoles (atari 2600 rules) and a bunch of other stuff I'm forgetting to mention. Why don't you buy me a new record player and mail it to me Adrian.

Adrian McCoy (Adrian McCoy), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 08:02 (twenty years ago) link

Ooh what consoles do you have? I try to collect them, but there aren't too many in NZ. My most prized one is the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, even though I can only get Horace and the Spiders to play. Also it cost me fuckall and at the same school fair I got a commodore 64 for FREE!

I have a Atari 2600, an Atari XE Home Computer, the original 8 bit nintendo, a Nintendo 64 (I know, not that old), and a shitload of old games for all of them. All I have with me now is my computer, but I do have a nintendo emulator on this so i can at least still play Dig Dug.

I got a NIntendo 64 too. I really want that first sega that was meant to be a computer.
My favourite game is SHOOTOUT hahahahhaa.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 22:34 (twenty years ago) link

Have you played Pokemon Stadium for N64? That game rules.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 23:47 (twenty years ago) link

Haha, no, but I bet my nephews have. I was fond of NHL Breakaway and Goldeneye. Nothing better than the cheats in that game. I loved using both the midget cheat and the big-headed cheat at the same time, so you could run around like a Pierce Brosnan mongoloid-child.

The Man they call Dan (The Man they call Dan), Thursday, 7 August 2003 00:53 (twenty years ago) link

That sounds brilliant!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Thursday, 7 August 2003 04:47 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, and it was even better if you unlocked the cheats so you could use the same features on Odd Job and Jaws... it was really hillarious

The Man they call Dan (The Man they call Dan), Friday, 8 August 2003 17:30 (twenty years ago) link

was shootout the one where you shot the ducks and the dog giggled at you?

black plastic (black plastic), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:07 (twenty years ago) link

Oh that was Duck Hunt... Damn that evil dog! I always wanted to pop a cap in his ASS, forget the ducks...

The Man they call Dan (The Man they call Dan), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:03 (twenty years ago) link

Shoot out has these two cowboys made out of blocks and you have to try and shoot each other. In some levels there's a cactus or a stagecoach in yr way and you can make it so you can shoot off bits of cactus or stagecoach!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Friday, 8 August 2003 21:30 (twenty years ago) link

And the stagecoach just keeps rolling by!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Saturday, 9 August 2003 00:49 (twenty years ago) link
