I've tried to understand what's going on with Australian real estate, but it's hopeless.

For example, in the States, you hold an auction only if it's a foreclosure or it's a shitty property that no one wants. Apparently down there, it's the opposite - you take the photos and show your home, then wait for the big auction day where you'll likely get more than you asked for.

(Well, in Sydney, at least.)

pplains, Tuesday, 22 December 2015 03:22 (ten years ago)

Yeah sale by auction is something that crept in maybe 15-20 years back and seems ubiquitous now. And its precisely so they can make as much money as possible (a la ebay auctions I guess). I've been priced completely out of home ownership because I need $80k just for the *downpayment* and I just cannot get that sort of money together. Its insane.

I was thinking thats a lot of money for a shitshack but its on 7 acres of waterfront, that'd go for like 3 jillion here :(

I feel IA at the shape of the living room in this luxury condo in my neighborhood that also sells for nearly 3x the price of a nearly equivalent co-op apartment.

You don't like that it ends at a point?

Look! You get that nifty little reading nook because of it. If it was flat, the nook would directly face the rest of the room.

pplains, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 16:06 (ten years ago)

IDK why it annoys me so much, partly just because it's so narrow compared to typical apartments in my neighborhood, which are mostly very spacious due to having been built in the 40s/50s. The point is awkward to me though, like it doesn't really look comfy as a nook, but it also doesn't interact with the rest of the room.

It does look narrow, but hey, isn't that life in the big city?

pplains, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 16:32 (ten years ago)

xp, IDK it just looks like an awkward layout resulting from an awkwardly shaped building resulting from an effort to put the maximum # of apartments on an awkwardly shaped lot to me. And it's absurdly expensive for the area, although the terrace has a "bar pergola."

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 15 June 2016 08:54 (ten years ago)

I feel like I can picture who lives in the house I posted above. It's the guy from my freshman college dorm with a blowout who once told one of my friends "I could make three phone calls and have you dead."

Certainly an obscenely soulless and too-large house.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 04:51 (nine years ago)

I love how the attempts at grandeur break down once we reach an actual room - just 8 foot ceilings, Venetian blinds, and an ill-proportioned room struggling to make sense of way way too many windows. Good luck putting anything in there besides miscellaneous objects arranged in order to vaguely suggest a hobby or lifestyle choice.

I did some house-hunting a few years ago and almost every place was staged after with exactly the sort of taupe Pottery Barn good taste you might expect.

One house we looked at was, however, still being rented by people who were totally just living there and it was refreshingly full of clutter and mess like that. Perhaps the tenants were in a dispute with the owner and were trying to be obnoxious, I dunno.

When I see listed houses that betray signs of human life it does sort of warm my cockles.

I’d rather a bathroom that looked like that than some grey-and-black flip with poorly done wiring and plumbing. (I speak from experience on the latter— we will never buy a flip again).
