BOSTON – Friday, June 14, 2013—MassDOT’s Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) Division is now accepting applications for the 2013 Low Number License Plate Lottery. The annual drawing gives drivers a chance to win a plate from a low number cache that the Registry is able to make available each year. “We expect to receive hundreds of applications leading up to the annual lottery,” said Registrar of Motor Vehicles Rachel Kaprielian. “We see interest and fascination from customers year after year. Some are trying to win a lucky number or letter combination, others are looking for an easy to remember plate, and still other applicants want to be part of the historical novelty that comes with a low number plate.”Applicants in this year's drawing will be vying for 140 of the most coveted Massachusetts license plates, including plate numbers: Z7, 740, and 6868.

I always assumed that people with low digit license plate numbers were senators or college presidents or VERY OLD PEOPLE who happened to be early adopters, but apparently normal people can pay for the honor, kind of like people who buy fake lordships and dukedoms online.

They make us put on a new plate, new numbers and everything, every seven years. No passing anything down unless it's a personalized plate maybe.

i don't see the point of that. do license plates really wear out that quickly?

They don't, but that's why they say they do it.

Makes me a little irrationally angry because we're approaching the end of the 123 ABC series. We already did the ABC 123 series. Together, those two series have lasted like 30 years. Now we're either going to have to add a digit or be like Kansas and have numbers and letters mixed in with each other.

i'm really proud i have a pretty low number. it's fun to watch them go up as time passes. maryland switched formats in 2010 to a war of 1812 plate and they have a single digit followed by M over D. when they ran out of numbers with MD they went to AA through AZ and now they are on BA to BZ. i think i saw a B over D, might be further along. but i have a 1 MD!

That is cool.
My neighbor was the mayor of North Little Rock. When NLR randomly came up in the series, guess who got 001 NLR, 002 NLR and 003 NLR.
Jonesboro was pissed ten years ago when DWI showed up in their series.

I saw a car in Newcastle upon Tyne once that had TORY, but when I looked closer the licence plate number was actually IORY and they'd screwed a bolt either side of the I so it looked like TORY from a distance(which is presumably illegal?), I wasn't really expecting an extra level of lameness after seeing TORY, but there it was.
― wends (bends), Saturday, 7 September 2013 15:59 (twelve years ago)
I like to think that person committed a lot of traffic violations and all the fines got sent to whoever it is actually has TORY as their licence plate.
― wends (bends), Saturday, 7 September 2013 16:02 (twelve years ago)
How often would your car get keyed if you had TORY as your licence plate? We must be talking several times a month in most parts of the country, right? The car looked in pretty good condition though.
