A special committee within the Florida Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) approves or rejects vanity license plate requests, but some of their decisions have been deemed questionable. As reported by WTSP 10 News, thousands of personalized plate requests in the sunshine state were rejected. Leslie Palmer, DHSMV spokesperson said that circumstances where the customized plates are called into review include, "The things that would be kind of generally objectionable, obviously things dealing with race, things dealing, you know, kind of a blatant sexual nature." If a majority of the committee finds the plate’s message objectionable, their finding is passed along to an agency head that must uphold the committee finding. Because of the process, sometimes questionable plates ultimately get approved. “SEE FOOD” on a Save the Manatee license plate was approved. “KRAKHED” on a motorcycle plate, and “HELP 2 P” were also deemed fine while, “CU-NHELL” and “DAAAMMM” were rejected. “OLD FART” was denied and “HORN MAN” was OK’d. Seemingly both offensive, “BIG TURD” was rejected while “BG JONSN” was approved. Also curious, “G8TR H8R” was denied, but “G8TR HTR” was approved. Florida Rays fans were also denied when “YKS SUK” and “SOX H9TR” were rejected.

BOSTON – Friday, June 14, 2013—MassDOT’s Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) Division is now accepting applications for the 2013 Low Number License Plate Lottery. The annual drawing gives drivers a chance to win a plate from a low number cache that the Registry is able to make available each year. “We expect to receive hundreds of applications leading up to the annual lottery,” said Registrar of Motor Vehicles Rachel Kaprielian. “We see interest and fascination from customers year after year. Some are trying to win a lucky number or letter combination, others are looking for an easy to remember plate, and still other applicants want to be part of the historical novelty that comes with a low number plate.”Applicants in this year's drawing will be vying for 140 of the most coveted Massachusetts license plates, including plate numbers: Z7, 740, and 6868.

I always assumed that people with low digit license plate numbers were senators or college presidents or VERY OLD PEOPLE who happened to be early adopters, but apparently normal people can pay for the honor, kind of like people who buy fake lordships and dukedoms online.

They make us put on a new plate, new numbers and everything, every seven years. No passing anything down unless it's a personalized plate maybe.
― pplains, Saturday, 17 August 2013 14:06 (twelve years ago)
i don't see the point of that. do license plates really wear out that quickly?

They don't, but that's why they say they do it.
