Nonononononono. Clinging to a story, that it's planned maintenance. But could be MPAA. Fuck that, I need KG for research.

it's just down while moving to new server space afaikit would be such a tragedy though. honestly even just bibliographically, for filmographies & screenshots & precis, it's one of the most useful cinema resources i think.

--- An update on the ongoing KG downtime --- Our apologies to all our users for the downtime and lack of updates on the situation. Here's the order of events from the last few weeks: - your kind donations paid for the next 12 months of web hosting. - BREIN lodged a complaint with our host. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BREIN - we are still online at this point. we began planning how to handle the situation, then... - an anonymous complaint to our domain registrar lead to suspension of our domain. this prevents your computer from translating karagarga.net into the IP address for our server. We have disabled access to the main website and tracker. The forum is still accessible with a workaround (see below). No data has been lost or leaked and we hope to see you all soon. - KG staff

Is the demise of KG inevitable? I'm also curious how people who use it for research or teaching feel about copyright for some of this stuff.
― pophatte (admrl), Thursday, 11 June 2015 15:07 (ten years ago)
BREIN seem like the copyright equivalent of patent trolls. Scumbags.

the generally pretty marginal mandate of KG always made it feel like it was kind of off the grid, to me, something that might just quietly exist on the sidelines for a long while. & i hope even if not, it would align with the succession trend of busted networks usually reasonably organically reforming elsewhere. i can't really imagine it in a fugitive, international-domain-suffix-hopping state, but who knows i guess.
the parameters of 'some of this stuff' are probably key when you talk copyright but i feel like the calculus regarding rights & access is still very positive. teachers being able to show things that are primarily inaccessible because they're out of circulation/out of licensing/or are not readily available is, i think, a bigger category of usage than screening things that are deliberately or restrictively not on dvd. it's complicated to use fair use agreements because you're invoking the law while ignoring the sorta flagrant copyright breaching element of the same law, but: i think educational use of a tv or vhs rip or a documentary for which there's a rights minefield &c comports with the spirit of fair use, is important & laudable &c. & re: research, i do feel like an initial breach of copyright is often preceding a legitimate screening, now. so many programmers lean on kg.
vague memories that you research/teach, admrl, so would love to hear your reservations or to be called out on my swashbuckling libertarian defence if you're less cavalier.

i used KG to snag a copy of a chinese movie to show in class last year, the teacher was v impressed
― 龜, Thursday, 11 June 2015 16:10 (ten years ago)
Yeah - as you say, I teach and I use KG for research. I don't believe I've ever shown anything from KG publicly in class (maybe a clip or two) and in most cases, being able to see something on there has resulted in us purchasing an educational copy for our collection. I know a few filmmakers who have work on there and only one of them has objected to it, after which it was removed. But I also know some filmmakers for whom educational/institutional sales provide at least some meager reward and I understand their objections.
Overall, I think its an incredible resource that probably results in a lot of good critical writing and creative production and I probably take it a little for granted. The humorlessness of some of the people in the community is also tempted by a lot of great, enthusiastic and generous members. The subtitling efforts always really impress me.
― pophatte (admrl), Thursday, 11 June 2015 16:50 (ten years ago)
kg's comic library has been massively eye opening and the ability to dip into the vast movie stream to find obscure OOP films has been a huge boon. the bibliographical material does tend to be top notch.

thanks for that post, admrl. good to hear. i know with ubuweb there was an evolution between them calling out non-participants, & moving towards reaching some sort of acquiescence, either through compliance in removing films or in meaningful compromise (like with michael snow, who asked for certain films to be taken down & supported the hosting of others), & it's nice to think that that's practiced in a setting that could otherwise be pretty craven. by virtue of being a hungry consumer i'm obviously partisan but i do think - again generally - that the circulation of the bulk of out-of-print/restricted-by-access-or-credential stuff is culturally positive, enriching. the subtitling is totally exemplary of the best, utopian-kinda elements of the internet; i've heard the same sort of stories about anime communities, & really organic, collaborative, supportive working models put together by volunteers in service of the material. i am just going to lazily throw the humourlessness of some participants under the umbrella of what morbius called aspect ratio people; i definitely like being able to cruise the forum just for like, cinephilic-shut-ins' deep-cut direct cinema recommendations.

So, KG has stopped giving invites? I was on there for 10 years+, kept a good ratio, there are movies I've worked on up there even, but lost my account as I guess I had a an older, second one I never used and didn't even think about. No help on IRC and I can't access the forum.

Still trying nine months later! If you have a KG invite to spare, you will become my New Favorite Person.
I have folders and folders of stuff I can share, some of which is from my time on KG and a lot of which is likely unseeded. Otherwise, any advice on how to get on there? I'm not on other private trackers and find the whole thing a little daunting. I basically just want to be on KG and work on having a good ratio there...
Now post that stupid crow image.

Does anyone have a kg or ptp invite perchance? Tryin' to get me mitts on some Hungarian documentary films made between the late 80s early 90s. As one can imagine, it has proved quite difficult. I don't have much to offer except... my friendship. :D

Filmmaker Tries to Unmask Private Torrent Tracker Owners through Cloudflarehttps://torrentfreak.com/filmmaker-tries-to-unmask-private-torrent-tracker-owners-through-cloudflare/
Through a DMCA subpoena directed at Cloudflare, an independent filmmaker is trying to uncover the identities of people connected to several prominent private torrent trackers. The legal paperwork was obtained at a California federal court and targets HDbits, PassThePopcorn, BroadcasTheNet, KaraGarga, and others. The information was requested for copyright protection purposes, without clarifying what this would entail.Despite their comparatively low public profiles, these platforms are well known and have been established for many years.Karagarga (KG), for example, has been around since 2005 and offers access to a wealth of film obscurities. The site focuses on archiving rare classic and cult movies. Blockbusters and other popular Hollywood releases can’t be found on the site, as uploading them is strictly forbidden.HDbits was launched around the same time, with no restrictions on popular film titles, while PassThePorpcorn and BroadcasTheNet both came onto the scene a few years later. Despite early DDoS attempts, these Gazelle-based trackers have been going strong for more than 15 years. The subpoena was obtained by filmmaker Matthew Schneider, who stated that he owns the rights to several movies. The titles include Do Us Part, Split: A Film Anthology, and Orlando Gloom - Always the Same. These are linked to the Canadian company Dirtbag Films, which has not been very active recently. As shown below, the filmmaker listed the URLs through which his works are allegedly shared on these sites. These URLs are not public, so Schneider or someone he works with presumably has access to these elusive trackers.

ummm this is relevant to very little and probably isn't even on kg (was never able to get an invite, tho i am on cinemageddon at least) but yesterday i couldn't remember david langford's name so i searched for "death parrot" and found the film "tuesday" (2023), apparently some kind of live-action ghibli riff featuring a 6 foot macaw serving as a death doula to a mother (julia louis-dreyfus) trying to deal with the impending death of her daughter
oh i've also really been into video mixtapes lately. a lot of stuff from EXP TV (which streams 24/7 at exptv.org) but some other stuff as well... i own the AGFA mixes that are out officially. if you haven't seen the hypnotic eye, it's good classic dallas public access mixtape stuff from the 90s.
shit what's the name... there's this acclaimd cult filmmaker in spain who made, like, tokusatsu stuff with him playing all the roles and doing all the effects in like kthe 60s and 70s, and he also made this really thoughtful examination of trans issued baseed on his experiences with a trans woman he met at a gay bar in 1975
ummm, bless their little hearts by billy woodberry, that's a fucking amazing one, 11 x 14, conical intersect, beetle queen conquers tokyo, gaea girls, manila in the claws of light, the police are blundering in the dark, zebraman
fish story! have you seen fish story? that one is great. if dominatrix waitrix is on there, i recommend that one too, i was surprised at how much i liked that one
idk just some random recs of stuff you might enjoy, or mighit not! i'm not sure i enjoy all of them tbh
