Best part of this story is the picture of the cop carrying the same gun used at Sandy Hook.

In response to a recent increase in crime, Paragould Mayor Mike Gaskill and Police Chief Todd Stovall offered residents at a town hall meeting Thursday night at West View Baptist Church what could be considered an extreme solution — armed officers patrolling the streets on foot.

Stovall told the group of almost 40 residents that beginning in 2013, the department would deploy a new street crimes unit to high crime areas on foot to take back the streets.

"[Police are] going to be in SWAT gear and have AR-15s around their neck," Stovall said. "If you're out walking, we're going to stop you, ask why you're out walking, check for your ID."

Stovall said while some people may be offended by the actions of his department, they should not be.

"We're going to do it to everybody," he said. "Criminals don't like being talked to."

Gaskill backed Stovall's proposed actions during Thursday's town hall.

"They may not be doing anything but walking their dog," he said. "But they're going to have to prove it."

Man dies in fireworks explosion in Clay County
by The Associated Press

WEST POINT, Miss. (AP) — Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott says a man has died in a homemade fireworks explosion outside his home on Christmas night.

Scott tells WCBI-TV in Columbus (http://bit.ly/Vz1Em4 ) that 60-year-old Ralph "Bubba" Elliott died just before 10 p.m. Tuesday when the homemade device exploded outside his home off Mississippi Highway 46 in western Clay County.

Elliott owned Elliott Trucking and did contract delivery work for Fed-Ex.

Scott says local, state and federal authorities are investigating to determine what was used in the explosive.

DECEMBER 21--A federal employee was formally reprimanded this month for excessive workplace flatulence, a sanction that was delivered to him in a five-page letter that actually included a log of representative dates and times when he was recorded “releasing the awful and unpleasant odor” in his Baltimore office.

An 83-year-old North Mankato man had made threats to kill someone and shot at officers several times before they returned fire that killed him during a standoff Thursday at his home.

Authorities said that after a four-hour standoff Thursday, officers tried to get closer to the house to look inside when Tschohl shot at them through a front window and a rear door. A short time later, he went out the back door carrying two guns and began firing at officers.

Benjamin Filbert says he got a call Tuesday, and when he answered, a recording said it wants to help him find a job.

"In the beginning, I was going along with it because I was curious to see if I did click on something online," said Filbert.

Although the person on the other end sounded like a live person, Filbert had doubts. So he decided to hang up.

Goat found wandering Hot Springs vanishes

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - An unfriendly billy goat found wandering near the Hot Springs Convention Center appears to have been stolen from an animal shelter.

The goat was picked up by animal services last month and taken to the shelter, where officials say it was taken by someone on Saturday.

The Sentinel-Record reports that animal services director Dan Bugg had hoped the owner would turn up or someone would pay the $35 fee to adopt the animal.

Bugg says the goat didn't show warmth toward humans probably had to be dragged from his outdoor enclosure. Bugg says the goat is "pretty hard-headed."

The goat was to have been put up for adoption on Monday.
