starbucks is usually french roast or higher. try a full city roast

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ (dyao), Thursday, 25 February 2010 04:37 (sixteen years ago)

I think you should try something that isn't too acidic, like sumatra mandheling. it's a dark but full flavored bean with low acidity, pretty good gateway bean imo. then you can decide whether or not you like brightness and spiciness in your coffee, and you can move on to african and south american beans.

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ (dyao), Thursday, 25 February 2010 04:53 (sixteen years ago)

is sumatra mandheling coffee mostly available via online retailers? it doesn't sound like something i'll easily find in my local supermarket.

i do want to try it.

oops i'm having coffee! pacific rim blend is great btw

harbl, Saturday, 24 April 2010 21:28 (sixteen years ago)

hey dyao how many ounces does that one cup filter make? 8?

harbl, Saturday, 24 April 2010 21:29 (sixteen years ago)

wait a minute was that a fucking dumb question or what

harbl, Saturday, 24 April 2010 21:30 (sixteen years ago)

loool. well it makes slightly less than the amount of water you pour into it as the grounds will soak up some water. I think it's better than a french press, less sediment.

dyªº (dyao), Sunday, 25 April 2010 01:40 (sixteen years ago)

wtf u already have aeropress

am0n, Sunday, 25 April 2010 04:03 (sixteen years ago)

lol I have a problem :-|

dyªº (dyao), Sunday, 25 April 2010 04:07 (sixteen years ago)

for drip, I have the swissgold onecup and a sock filter. the sock is better but a more inconvenient to clean.

for espresso style I have the aeropress.

dyªº (dyao), Sunday, 25 April 2010 04:07 (sixteen years ago)

lol sock filter. have u seen/tried the different aeropress methods people have come up with for instance
http://timwendelboe.no/2009/06/top-3-aeropress-methods/
the one in the aeropress instruction booklet just seems off somehow

am0n, Sunday, 25 April 2010 05:00 (sixteen years ago)

whoa those look intense. willhave to give them a shot! (no pun intended)

dyªº (dyao), Sunday, 25 April 2010 06:40 (sixteen years ago)

wait the aeropress is made of plastic? does it taste plasticky? i used to sometimes make tea in my plastic nalgene and now i am imagining that's what it tastes/smells like :(

harbl, Sunday, 25 April 2010 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

doesn't taste plasticky at all!

dyªº (dyao), Sunday, 25 April 2010 13:36 (sixteen years ago)

Was recently introduced to siphon coffee. A bridge too far for home prep, but it tasted nice.

one month passes...

i need to figure out what i am going to do for coffee in my new place. do i get a new drip pot? french press?

tehresa, Sunday, 6 June 2010 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

i am happy french pressing

harbl, Sunday, 6 June 2010 19:56 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know but F favors NesCafe which I know is probably considered disgusting by purists but hell, it's close enough to coffee for me when I don't want to leave the apt (and we don't have a coffee-maker). Also, unexpected bonus, the glass jars it comes in are the right size to accept my fancy Dutch jar toppers:

my major complaint with french pressing is that the coffee does not stay as warm as in a drip pot when it's on a burner. also, it is more labor intensive if you need to make a lot of coffee (say, if you have a guest and each of you wants to drink more than one cup). also for some reason i feel like i don't get the benefit of the caffeine as much from french press?

i am not going instant. i have had nescafe a lot - v popular in europe, actually. but in the morning i need to grind some beans and have fresh, real coffee.

tehresa, Sunday, 6 June 2010 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

yeah all those things are true. i can only have one cup and am always waiting for it to cool down enough to drink anyway. i don't know about the caffeine thing though. could be you have had only dark roasts from it or something.

harbl, Sunday, 6 June 2010 20:02 (sixteen years ago)

no i have been using the same beans i used in my old drip pot.

tehresa, Sunday, 6 June 2010 20:05 (sixteen years ago)

oh i didn't know *you* had been using it. my parents use drip pot on stove, it works ok

harbl, Sunday, 6 June 2010 20:06 (sixteen years ago)

thinking about getting a drip pot these days. i've been french pressin it but i just drink too much coffee and it feels like i spend a quarter of my day assembling it. would still use the press for a special evening cup or something.

horseshoe, Sunday, 6 June 2010 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

^^^basically how i am feeling

tehresa, Sunday, 6 June 2010 21:11 (sixteen years ago)

yeah it's good for people like me because i can never get to that stage of coffee drinking, dunno what's wrong with me

harbl, Sunday, 6 June 2010 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

that is a good thing imo i go through so many coffee beans!

horseshoe, Sunday, 6 June 2010 23:03 (sixteen years ago)

I still like my swissgold onecup, it's easier to use than a french press and the coffee stays pretty hot.

http://www.cappojim.com/images/D/Swiss_Gold_One_Cup_Black_lg.jpg

not really good for volume though, I think probably nothing beats a percolator for making large volumes of coffee w/o too much labor.

denvil crowe (dyao), Monday, 7 June 2010 00:29 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i def need more than 1 cup

tehresa, Monday, 7 June 2010 00:31 (sixteen years ago)

I've been thinking about getting a regallar ol drip pot, too. I've actually cut back to about 2-3 cups a day, tops, so it's not so much the volume but that when I get up at 6:00 for work it'd be nice to just sorta hit a button and let coffee brew itself while I hop in the shower, instead of waiting around for water to boil on the stove etc.

always waiting for it to cool down enough to drink anyway

Try an ice cube, my man.

i have a one cup filter i got in Hanoi for like the equivalent of 29 cents that makes the best damn drip coffee (no paper filter bs either). it's all stainless steel and so easy to use/clean.

_▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 05:55 (fifteen years ago)

we talkeda bout mint syrup in coffee upthread, but not mint leaves. i think i'd be afraid. i have been drinking trader joe's coffee the past few days and it's ok, not great. i'm gonna go back to fancy coffee soon.

the girl with the butt tattoo (harbl), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 11:37 (fifteen years ago)
