i bought a $450 patagonia 3L goretex hardshell in 2004. since then they have replaced it twice. like i mailed it back, and they gave me either a 100% equivalent jacket, or a credit slip for $600. idk that three $150 jackets would have made it 18 years.

the late great, Tuesday, 13 December 2022 06:42 (one year ago) link

sorry that got scrambled. it was a $600 jacket in 2004, but when they last replaced it (2015 i think?) the cost for the equivalent model was $450, so they made the check for that, not $600. idk if goretex got cheaper or what

anyway the lifetime guarantee they have is pretty cool. the replacement i got in 2015 is dark gray with a white zipper. some of the taping on the inside is getting a bit loose, and i think i’m not going to send it back because i like the color + contrast zip and they don’t have one like it! planning to try the rei affiliates that repair shells

the late great, Tuesday, 13 December 2022 06:47 (one year ago) link

this is what i am doing with my Marmot, which also has a lifetime guarantee!

I wound up buying a Patagonia Tres Parka, which is pretty much exactly what I was looking for - down lining but not bulky, slim profile, waterproof. By far the most I’ve spent on a coat, but I know myself and I know I’ll probably wear it for many years. Also with the lining out it’s a good raincoat. The lifetime guarantee kind of got me over the price.

v nice parka, money well spent imo

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 24 December 2022 23:42 (one year ago) link

I’ve had the Marmot parka since 2015– with these sorts of coats, my experience has been that price is reflective of quality

Anyone have a brand they particularly like for a basic, solid color cotton crewneck pullover sweatshirt?

I ordered one from Mack Weldon, and the best I can describe it is, it looks and fits like it was made by someone who is still learning how to make clothing?

Was checking out some on the Alex Mill site (have never tried this brand before) and also Asket (pricey, but I like that they have multiple length options for each size).

i would look at the todd snyder champion stuff, it's very good

I like Colorful Standard, not sure if they exist in the US though

joe mccoy ballpark crewneck sweatshirt by the real mccoy’s

the late great, Monday, 2 January 2023 17:42 (one year ago) link

thx, good suggestions. The Todd Snyder champion stuff does look very nice, but they only had crewnecks with pockets and I have a weird thing about pocket shirts (as limited as my fashion is, I get really fussy about certain things). The pullover hoodies actually look really good and I may eventually try one. I ordered one from Asket on the rec of some style mag article or other. Will report back.

parka story part ii

the lovely Emma B graciously volunteered to defer to my parka reconnoiter, so i got the patagonia i posted above and goddamn it if it isn't literally the exact same jacket as the one that's falling apart. i mean almost literally exactly the same. i spent multiple weeks looking at websites, reading reviews etc, telling myself that i was hunting for exactly the right thing, no holds barred, when actually what i was doing was subconsciously attempting to find an exact duplicate for what i already had

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 22:48 (one year ago) link

these are the fucking jackets

That's a really nice color on the new one

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 00:57 (one year ago) link

that patagonia is super nice - I was actually trying to find that one in that color to try on when I went shopping but they didn't have it, and I had already waited too long and needed to pull the trigger (was about to travel, although flight got canceled so turned out it didn't matter).

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 01:16 (one year ago) link

Asket crewneck came and seems v good, nice sturdy material, good construction, good fit. I like that they have the three different length options in each size, and that led to me getting a sweatshirt that fits better than most.

I have one additional thing I'm looking for right now: dark rinse jeans without fades that are nice enough to wear to the office. I have muscular thighs and calves so I may need an "athletic" type cut or something that has a little more room at the top and tapers at the bottom. I know there's a lot of jeans out there, but, recs?

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 20:00 (one year ago) link

im sure ive recommended them on here before but han kjobenhavn tapered are a nice cut for the husky boy and the denim is very hi qual, tho ive never bought their dark wash before, you can find them for much less than the price on their site, unclear if theyre "nice enough for the office" but u cld prob tell from the pix

man, don’t wear jeans to the office. no jeans are nice enough for work. go for a classier alternative, like cyborg pants

do we believe that style should speak a social language as in this thread? or can we have a little bit of "art project" as a treat?

there's a very painful period when you see guys start to pay attention to clothes and they start to dress worse than they did before they started paying attention to clothes pic.twitter.com/RWNGjiv6SB

style always speaks a social language either way, whether you are consciously doing it ot not ihibidtae

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 22:24 (one year ago) link

yeah i think thats right mainly social art project as a treat xp

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 22:25 (one year ago) link

maybe it's that always knowing it's a social language makes the art project part either good or bad i guess

ꙮ (map), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 22:40 (one year ago) link

also if you're going to color outside the lines you better not wear sad tan loafers with mile long shoelace loops

ha i noticed that too

almost shocking how unsexy this guy is for a fascist, there have been some sexy fascists

ꙮ (map), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 22:52 (one year ago) link

in this theory of fascism, peterson goes in the loser creep wing

I have been doing a lot of research and want to briefly share one observation: Nazism has weird loser creep vibes, but Italian Fascism has douchey jock vibes, fascism was at its heart a nerd-bully alliance

There was a store near me in Queens that sold those clownish suits and dress shirts in styles like that, always Italian-sounding makers I had never heard of

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 23:09 (one year ago) link

i recently bought these ott wesco engineer boots and i didn't have anything that i could wear them with, so a few months later i ended up with camo-pattern duck dynasty utility pants and a buffalo check flannel in ice blue, both from taylor stitch, and i wear the outfit to work and the boots, the camo and the pattern clash are something lol. def 'my job is boring let's see what i can get away with' vibes.
