idk, do we have one of these? i've been trying to up my style game recently and thought it might be good to have a thread to post stuff i like, get the occasional opinion, etc. open to all, anything from business dress to casual etc.etc. maybe i should just get a pinterest or something.

*i'd like this thread to be about actual clothes ppl are wearing or considering wearing, there's an ile thread if you want to talk about the menswear blogosphere or make fun of stuff.

anyway, i don't have much occasion to wear ties, but i saw this on sale and became sort of obsessed with it so just placed the order. i want to wear it at thanksgiving or christmas:

I need a fashion upgrade, I just feel like a schlub with most of my biz cas at work. I've always just gotten dockers to wear to work, because they're cheap and I've had trouble staying the same pants size over the course of my adult life. I never wanted to drop the coin on nicer pants because I knew in 6 months I would not fit in them. Plus I wear those dockers the fuck out. They are frazzled around the legs and the waist, all of them. Since I've been able to basically stay the same weight for the last year and a half now, I think it may be time to consider something better.

As for shirts, I have about 14 of the same kind of shirt, just in different colors/patterns. They are fine, but again, I've worn them the fuck out. Also, I have a bunch of mediums that don't fit as well as the few smalls that I have. I always buy them on sale, so it's hard to stumble upon the correct size, and I always seem to get heavily patterned ones, nothing basic.

I've considered trying out this service: http://hallmadden.com/ Seems like a good deal if the quality is there? In a year I would have a good shirt collection.

Don't even get me started on my shoes.

I started wearing Dockers this year because I had problems splitting the seat of all the mid-range, Macy's-bought wool dress pants (Nautica, Calvin Klein, etc.) I had been wearing. It was a choice between spending all this damn money getting them dry cleaned and mended all the damn time or buying a new pair of pants for $35 a couple times a year. I'm pretty happy with the Dockers, but yeah, one of them has the makings of a hole in the knee already because my legs don't fit into the seats on my commuter bus.

how's life, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 12:21 (ten years ago) link

I've had too many run-ins with shirt sizes to buy by anything but collar size measurement unless I can try it on.

Please review your choices carefully. (seandalai), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 12:25 (ten years ago) link

Also, I sprung $150 for a pair of Ecco's a few years ago. They're comfortable, but they emit a horrible squeak when I walk across polished floors. Since I won't be able to afford another $150 to drop on shoes in the near future, fuck it, I'm just going to squeak everywhere I go.

this is interesting. the guys who started it have a decent rep for their suits, i think. i don't like that you sign up for the service without ever trying a shirt--i think they should send you one to start sizing and let you assess the quality (if you've only been wearing s/m/l, go to a tailor or nice clothing store and get measured for your shirt size!). also it is all or nothing--you keep the three shirts or return them all. i assume that means they're going with pretty safe fabrics, colors, and patterns--fine if you're not picky.

getting them dry cleaned and mended all the damn time

how often were you dry cleaning your pants?

I've had too many run-ins with shirt sizes to buy by anything but collar size measurement unless I can try it on.

agreed. i had a longstanding no s/m/l shirts policy that i recently broke for some cheap j. crew casual button up shirts for summer. they fit great through my torso and had enormous sleeves (which was not a problem since i only wore them with the sleeves cuffed).

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 13:08 (ten years ago) link

how often were you dry cleaning your pants?

Not enough for them to actually be clean or unwrinkled most of the time.

how's life, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 13:16 (ten years ago) link

It may just be the quality I was buying, but every shirt that I've got based on neck size has been voluminous everywhere else.

Jeff, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 13:39 (ten years ago) link

if you want to be super anal you can get a measuring tape and take some basic measurements on the best-fitting shirt you have to compare to web sizing info (or be even crazier and bring your measuring tape to the store too). i've taken to doing this with things like leg openings on pants.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 14:05 (ten years ago) link

i don't think that is super anal, i think that is just good sense. shopping online without knowing your preferred measurements is a complete crapshoot

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 14:09 (ten years ago) link

SUPER anal is keeping your measurements in an evernote doc so you always have them available on your phone, not that i know anyone who does that

i feel like custom / MTM shirt sites have become a huge trend in men's online retail in the past 5 years or so, there are SO MANY

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 15:47 (ten years ago) link

yeah there are tons. do let us know about your experience w/blacklapel, jho.

i got a shirt made for my wedding at a mtm shirt tailor in boston (they basically follow the web model in that the sewing is done in hong kong, but someone measures you irl) and i was a little disappointed that the resulting shirt still had tons of billowing in the back when i tucked it in. kind of soured me on the cheap-ish mtm concept. i just bought an off the rack shirt from these guys - http://www.ledbury.com that fit me perfectly through the torso (which is kind of a big deal because i'm not a small guy and really don't need any fabric pooling near my waist).

do we believe that style should speak a social language as in this thread? or can we have a little bit of "art project" as a treat?

idk, what makes fashion fun isn't the part he's calling an "art project", it has nothing really to do with arranging colors and shapes, it's more theatrical. Clothes are an important vehicle for transformation specifically because they're so deeply encoded with social signals for something so easily acquired and shed. And that appeals to my playful sense, sure, but it can also be kinda serious? I just feel like, to achieve the confluence he's talking about between fashion choices and lifestyle/personality isn't making good on that transformative potential. imo what's more interesting than wearing clothes to articulate your personality is not to. The exciting part isn't being able to define yourself, it's being able to sidestep a designated or chosen identity, to constantly undermine yourself and step into new and unfamiliar roles.
