I do not know how to shop for pants. Every time I get a pair, there is something that is just not right. Too tight, too big at the hips, fabric is all wrong, etc
Where do you guys find good presentable slacks these days??
I swear it's almost funny how many pants I've gotten that I've been like ... o_O
Help!

I have pairs of dress slacks from H&M and Muji - both are pretty okay
― barthes simpson, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 18:10 (twelve years ago) link
oh Muji might not be a bad idea.
― surm, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 18:20 (twelve years ago) link
for work slacks the j crew urban slim has done me pretty well. not too tight, not too baggy. but ya know ... it totally depends on your body type. for comparison, h&m pants fit me like i'm going out to cruise for dong at the local roller rink, and gap pants make me feel like an alienated late 90s teenager again. make of that what you will.

I've found that the express 'photographer' cut is pretty good for people with thunder thighs, fwiw
― barthes simpson, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 18:24 (twelve years ago) link
when i do find a pair, i wear them every day until i stumble upon a decent substitute.
i want to find some more of these Ambig jeans that i got in new orleans, they fit perfectly and they're kind of stretchy to boot.

Would love to learn to cut and stitch my own trousers. Couldn't find non jeans that I could wear comfortably, not very comfortable in wool.
Have seen the trousers from here and wished they were things i could afford, http://www.mendozamenswear.com/?category_name=trousersespecially the psychedelic cords.
Would love to get a pair of 2 depth pile elephant cords cut in a decent style, maybe 15" bottoms. Like you see pictures of bands from the 60s wearing.

think i'm gonna order some brooks brothers chinos
― surm, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:59 (twelve years ago) link
as far as chinos go i like the brooks, j crew and lands end canvas (the "refined" slim fit) versions. epaulet in new york is $$$$$$$$ but their pants fit so fucking well.
― adam, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:02 (twelve years ago) link
lands end you say
― surm, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:06 (twelve years ago) link
what kind of fit are you looking for, surm?
― barthes simpson, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:15 (twelve years ago) link
their "canvas" brand is for young hip types like us, according to the 10,000 catalogues they send me every week. when their stuff is on sale, which is all the damn time, i think the price:quality is pretty good and the cuts are way more reasonable than other stuff at that price.
the regular lands end line is ok for "tailored fit" shirts but it's all cut for big midwestern middle management dudes.
― adam, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:17 (twelve years ago) link
what the hell is cuff length, i'm trying to check out at jcrew and they throw this wrench into the works
i am looking for straight fit flat front slacks, nothing too skinny
― surm, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:18 (twelve years ago) link
adam i am looking at the straight fit canvas in land's end, doesn't look bad
are these pants baggy at the thigh in your experience? i can't stand that
― surm, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:26 (twelve years ago) link
feel like a plebe for suggesting this but maybe calvin klein? or some of the higher end ralph lauren lines
― barthes simpson, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:28 (twelve years ago) link
yeah CK is not a bad idea, thanks
― surm, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:36 (twelve years ago) link
i kind of love CK
although tbh i have bought "slim" pants from them before that were ... not slim
what do we think of this? http://www.ralphlauren.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4360394&cp=1766205.1766230&ab=ln_men_cs2_pants&parentPage=family#Page_1

Fuck, I really need pants too but I'm relegated to H&M bcz I can't really afford to spend more than $30-40 on a pair of pants atm

can somebody pls explain to me why they stopped making pockets in front
all pant pockets for men are on the side now
i just don't understand
was this like a meeting everyone took and decided
― surm, Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:04 (twelve years ago) link
sides means it's like, a dress slack? I think
I think you really gotta get to the store and try them on!
― barthes simpson, Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:05 (twelve years ago) link
i guess so
i just don't see why front pockets can't also be dressy
it's like i can't get front pocket without rivets
― surm, Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:07 (twelve years ago) link
fucked up
surm do you like pleats?
― bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:11 (twelve years ago) link
lol i do in theory but
― surm, Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:14 (twelve years ago) link
... i look a little bit too much like a 80s IT engineer when i wear them
i think hot preppy boys can get away with pleats
― surm, Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:15 (twelve years ago) link
That was mostly a joke; pleats are universally awful imo.
― bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:16 (twelve years ago) link
Just like Brooks Brothers shirts
when you add them together it makes me throw up a little bit in my mouth

are these otherwise good pants y/n? looks like all their "deals" result in getting 2 pairs for ~$100 which is not awful if they are good. i def have big thighs & have felt too tight in certain pants
― johnny crunch, Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:19 (twelve years ago) link
the pair I have, in black, def looks v faded after only a few washes
― barthes simpson, Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:20 (twelve years ago) link
hmpf
i have on some tommy hilfiger pants today that i bought on the theory that the exact some ones as shorts are p much my fav shorts. as pants you can tell much more that the material is prob cheap cuz they're too rigid & crumply
― johnny crunch, Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:57 (twelve years ago) link
Last week I split the seat of my third pair of dress pants. The first two were fromJos. A. Bank suits. This time it was a pair of flat front Nauticas from Macys. So I've just given up on life and bought a couple pairs of dockers. I'm prettybummed about it, but maybe they wont splitwhen I'm crouching down to pick something up? Andif they do, I guess they're just $40. They really look like shit though.

The Dockers Alpha Khakis are quite nice IMO

I haven't actually worn them but my roommate has a few pairs and they look great.
i finally found one--one! pair of dress pants that i really love. unfortunately they were on a clearance rack in the saks outlet and by the time i went back there were no more.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 15:51 (eleven years ago) link
those dockers alpha khakis fit nice except they are way too low rise. i am very tall and a grownup and tuck my shirt in and having the waist of my pants like halfway down my dick makes me look fuckin weird.
― adam, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 15:54 (eleven years ago) link
where do i get heavy wool "classic" cut ankle swingers as worn in e.g. the master?
― caek, Thursday, 28 February 2013 13:32 (eleven years ago) link
in february i went to top man for the first time in my life and basically all their wool trousers fit me and felt great. i have been wasting my life!!
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 09:00 (eleven years ago) link
Top Man is one of the only places that does trousers slim enough to fit me. Everywhere else's slim fit are like clown pants on me. It's really annoying. I prob should use a tailor but until then it's mostly Top Man.

I don't own a pair, but people always talk about how well Bonobos pants fit.

found some comfortable nauticas @ marshalls recently. i cant fully tell if they look good or not but i dont esp care

Hey guys, I mostly wear jeans and boots, but I've been thinking I'd like to wear casual pants and boots. Maybe Chinos. I went to Nordstrom but every pair I tried on wear too slim for boots. Any ideas?
― JacobSanders, Sunday, 19 June 2016 14:42 (eight years ago) link
What kinds of boots? I wear skinny jeans and red wings and I only somewhat look like a cliche. I probably need to revisit my jeans situation though because i gained some weight in my thighs this year.
― Treeship, Sunday, 19 June 2016 16:21 (eight years ago) link
...the elusive boot cut chinos...
― lag∞n, Sunday, 19 June 2016 16:27 (eight years ago) link
they exist! bonobos sells them.
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 19 June 2016 16:33 (eight years ago) link
lmao
― lag∞n, Sunday, 19 June 2016 16:45 (eight years ago) link
am i missing something or is a straight cut fine for boots? i wear these fkin rad cowboy boots with straight cut chinos all the time and you just pull the leg over the shaft and it's fine.
― riverine (map), Sunday, 19 June 2016 17:37 (eight years ago) link
Yeah i dont think bootcuts serve a practical function
― Treeship, Sunday, 19 June 2016 17:38 (eight years ago) link
if you're in shape and cowboy boots are your daily wear and you absolutely nail the hem i think it is possible for bootcut jeans to be acceptable. but i probably just described like 4 guys in the entire country.
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 19 June 2016 21:55 (eight years ago) link
I wear cowboy boots. Straight cut would be fine for my boots, I think. But all I've found are skinny pants. I wear straight cut slim wranglers and RRL. Boot cut is ok until they are washed and shrink and then they have the worse shape.
― JacobSanders, Monday, 20 June 2016 02:45 (eight years ago) link
don't let your pants shrink
― call all destroyer, Monday, 20 June 2016 02:58 (eight years ago) link
all chinos have a straight fit iirc! hit up macy's instead of nordstrom, try dockers or levis. if you want 'nicer' check j. crew or banana republic, even 'nicer' brooks brothers clark advantage chinos are built like a tank ($90) but maybe a little dressier than what you really want. j crew factory online, 'bleecker' fit, like 30 bucks on sale.
― riverine (map), Monday, 20 June 2016 03:13 (eight years ago) link
^ just got some bleecker fit for $9 and damn these are some comfortable pants. Even if it looks like I could hang out in the madchester scene. Got to be a loose fit
